Notes On The Status And Teaching Of Vertebrate Comparative Anatomy And Embryology In European Universities, Karl E. Goellner
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
During six months in Europe and Great Britain inquiry was made at 35 universities as to the status of vertebrate comparative anatomy and embryology in undergraduate curricula. People directly involved in teaching these courses were interviewed. Wide variation in programs was found, with evidence of a de-emphasis of morphology in many institutions.

Help! Help Your Substitute Teach Science, David V. Mccalley, Frank W. Starr, O. W. Eason
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The science teacher often finds that to miss a day of school most frequently means to have lost a day of instruction. School administrators are experiencing serious difficulty in finding substitutes for teachers of the new B.S.C.S., C.B.A., CHEMS and P.S.S.C., programs.

The relationship between conservation and ecology is stressed.
Macroscopic Invertebrates On The Higher Aquatic Plants At Clear Lake, Lowa, Roger J. Mrachek
Macroscopic Invertebrates On The Higher Aquatic Plants At Clear Lake, Lowa, Roger J. Mrachek
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Macroscopic invertebrates were removed and counted from 355 samples of higher aquatic vegetation collected between 23 June 1965 and 3 September 1965 at Clear Lake, Iowa. It was found that all species of higher aquatic plants do not harbor the same populations of animals and that the composition of the macroscopic invertebrate populations on the plants showed a successional variation throughout the summer. A direct linear relationship was found between the surface areas of aquatic plants and the numbers of animals found on their surfaces.

Factors Affecting The Structure And Distribution Of Terrestrial Pulmonata, Charles G. Atkins
Factors Affecting The Structure And Distribution Of Terrestrial Pulmonata, Charles G. Atkins
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Soil CaCO3 levels were determined for six ecosystems in Washtenaw and Wayne Counties, Michigan and in Linn County, Iowa; and correlation between these results and the shell thickness of certain terrestrial snails was made. Species used were Anguispira alternata (Say), Triodopsis multilineata (Say), and T. albolabris (Say). Two ecosystems had high CaCO3 levels (120-144 ppm), three had intermediate levels (93-99 ppm) and one had a low level (40 ppm). Width/thickness ratios of live and cast shells showed that those in high calcium ecosystems had thicker shells than those in low calcium ecosystems, though there were large deviations in …

The Rehabilitation And Preservation Of Indian Burial Mounds By The National Park Service, Garland J. Gordon
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
At Effigy Mounds National Monument in northeast Iowa, the National Park Service is conducting a program to rehabilitate Indian burial mounds which were damaged by unknown individuals before the park was established. The program is described relating the historical background and reasoning for it to the basic purposes of the National Park Service. The use of archeological methods results in the retrieval of data and information that would otherwise be lost or remain unknown. Soil monoliths and other soil samples were collected for detailed analysis at a later time in connection with studies of prehistoric environments. Two basic and inexpensive …
Lntraspecific Variation Within The Conodont Polygnathus Brevilamina, Wayne I. Anderson, Karen Ozias
Lntraspecific Variation Within The Conodont Polygnathus Brevilamina, Wayne I. Anderson, Karen Ozias
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Intraspecific variation was observed in a study of 177 well preserved specimens of the conodont Polygnathus brevilamina. Variations in the size of platform and in the degree of ornamentation of the platform are illustrated. These variations are present in juvenile specimens. The study indicates that the original definition of Polygnathus brevilamina is too narrow and that a broader concept of speciation is needed if conodont species are to be useable.
An Investigation Of Filigree As Design In Selected Pieces Of Jewelry, Anne K. Graham
An Investigation Of Filigree As Design In Selected Pieces Of Jewelry, Anne K. Graham
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The ancient art of filigree jewelry has almost become a lost art. Today, some of the jeweler-artist-craftsmen believe that much of the filigree being done lacks the originality that could make it a creative art expression. Because traditional filigree designs have been handed down from generation to generation they have become copies of what has been done before. Filigree design, by the definition of being any thread-like decoration, is a linear approach to jewelry. A linear approach suggests delicate work with a lightness and femininity. I have tried to maintain a light airy quality in my filigree jewelry, and for …

Sarcocystis Infections In Relation To Age Of Iowa Cottontails (Protozoa: Sarcocystidae), Frederick J. Vande Vusse
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Sarcocystis leporum was found in 42 of 173 (24.3 %) cottontail rabbits (Sylvilagus floridanus mearnsi) examined. Infections were not observed in cottontails less than 6 months old. Incidence rose from zero at age 5 months to 67% at age 12 months. Ninety per cent of cottontails 25-48 months old were infected. The age of individual cottontails was estimated from the eye lens weight.

The Course Of Columbiform Plasmodium Relictum Infections In Canaries, B. T. Ridgeway
The Course Of Columbiform Plasmodium Relictum Infections In Canaries, B. T. Ridgeway
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Canaries were inoculated with a strain of Plasmodium relictum isolated from a mourning dove and maintained by blood passage through pigeons. Parasitemias reached a peak on the fourth day following inoculation in all but two birds, dropped sharply thereafter and remained at low levels through the tenth day of infection. An asexual cycle of twenty to twenty-four hours was observed, with matinal and synchronous sporulation. Gametocyte numbers were low throughout the infections and eleven merozoites, on the average, were produced per mature schizont. Signs of pathogenicity were not observed and all infected birds survived the active phase of infection. The …

Optic Nerve Size In Blind And Normal Mice, Margaret L. Watson, Jean E. Mckinnie, Donald M. Evans
Optic Nerve Size In Blind And Normal Mice, Margaret L. Watson, Jean E. Mckinnie, Donald M. Evans
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Measurements of eyes and optic nerves of blind and normal mice were taken at ages ranging from 1-60 days. The mice used were from a Bagg albino strain in which a dominant mutation for blindness had occurred. The size of the optic nerve appears to be dependent upon the development of the eye. Optic nerves from blind eyes are smaller than those from normal eyes, and optic nerves from blind eyes without a lens and with a folded retina are smaller than those from eyes with a lens, even though the lens is vacuolated and the cornea is thickened.
