Effect Of Multiple Medication On Hemoglohlin Content In Tranquilized Mice, Lester C. Shell, G. Dixon, T. Wyne, C. Nordstrom, J. Augustine, J. Heynen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Varying doses of medication were given tranquilized white mice. The hemoglobin content was measured by means of a Spectronic 20 colorimeter, using the Cannan chemical technique, with percent transmittance from colorimeter reading plotted against concentration grams per hemoglobin per 100 ml. blood of the standard. Comparison of length of medication, dosage, sex of animals, age of animals, and length of time on tranquilizer before medication was started recorded. Included in medication were varying amounts of sex hormones, and effects noted.

Physiological Observations On Raccoons In Winter, G. Edgar Folk Jr., Karen B. Coady, Mary A. Folk Jan 1968

Physiological Observations On Raccoons In Winter, G. Edgar Folk Jr., Karen B. Coady, Mary A. Folk

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Body temperatures were recorded earlier from raccoons tethered outdoors in extreme cold. There was no suppression in body temperature. Later, two events suggested a new study, this time on heart rates: (1) the development of implantable radio-capsules for heart rate and EKG, and (2) the information that bears develop a bradycardia in the winter den, slowing sleeping heart rates from 40 b/m to 8-15 b/m. Three raccoons were studied periodically in outdoor dens in midwinter with Iowa implanted radio-capsules. Unlike the bears, when the raccoons stayed indoors for several days due to severe weather, their sleeping heart rates went up, …

Wallace And Carver Science Halls, Clifford L. Meints

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The old science building, in which George Washington Carver studied while at Simpson College, was remodeled in 1967, dedicated the Henry A. Wallace Hall of Science, and now houses the Departments of Physics, Geology, Mathematics, and Psychology as well as providing general lecture and recitation rooms. The newer Carver Science Hall was remodeled in 1968 and houses general classroom space along with the expanded Biology and Chemistry Departments. Specific aspects of the remodeling are described, and some sidelights of the building's history are mentioned. Two other honors concerning George Washington Carver at Simpson College are mentioned.

Spotted Skunk And Weasel Populations Den And Cover Usage By Northeast Iowa, Emmett Polder Jan 1968

Spotted Skunk And Weasel Populations Den And Cover Usage By Northeast Iowa, Emmett Polder

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Examination of dens and territories of 118 Mustela frenata, 59 Mustela rixosa, and 65 Spilogale interrupta, in northeast Iowa indicated that tall grass, hay meadow, and brush-bramble-weed growth at field edges were the favorite habitats of the three species. Black willows were attractive to Spilogale and M. Jrenata. M. rixosa was most tolerant of sparse cover. Spilogale and M. frenata preferred burrows of Franklin ground squirrels and pocket gophers for primary den sites. M. rixosa favored mole runs and Blarina burrows for den sites. The present trend to continuous corn, reduced hay acreage, removal of permanent fences, and use of …

Pollution Study In The Boundary Waters Canoe Area, Ruth N. Siemer Jan 1968

Pollution Study In The Boundary Waters Canoe Area, Ruth N. Siemer

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Bacteriological quality of water along commonly used canoe routes in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area along the Minnesota-Canadian border was checked by estimating the most probable number (MPN) of coliforms and total plate counts of samples collected over a wide geographic area. Results show that much of the water used for drinking purposes does not meet United States Public Health Service standards for potability. Additional study is needed to determine (1) whether USPHS standards have any validity as applied to wilderness waters where high counts probably do not indicate human fecal contamination and (2) whether animals contributing to high counts …

Experimental Induction Of A Normal Morphological Phenocopy Of An Inflorescence In A Zea. Mays L. Mutant, Alan R. Orr Jan 1968

Experimental Induction Of A Normal Morphological Phenocopy Of An Inflorescence In A Zea. Mays L. Mutant, Alan R. Orr

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

FASCICLED EAR (Fa), a dominant ZEA MAYS L. mutant effecting the form of the inflorescence, was treated with aqueous solutions of a-naphthaleneacetic acid, indoleacetic acid, gibberellic acid, maleic hydrazide and triiodobenzoic acid every three days from the seedling stage until tassel emergence. The mutant responded to a-naphthaleneacetic acid and indoleactic acid in such a manner that certain treated plants developed a normal-appearing ear and tassel. The idea that an ear and tassel shoot meristem is a "plastic" system genetically programmed at specific points in development through a hormonal balance is discussed.

Survival, Reproductive Success, And Spread Of Introduced Rio Grande Turkeys In Northeast Iowa, Dennis D. Wigal, Arnold O. Haugen Jan 1968

Survival, Reproductive Success, And Spread Of Introduced Rio Grande Turkeys In Northeast Iowa, Dennis D. Wigal, Arnold O. Haugen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Thirty-nine Rio Grande wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo intermedia) from Texas were introduced in the Yellow River State Forest, Allamakee County, Iowa, in the winter of 1960-61. The population was studied in three northeastern Iowa counties from June, 1966, through September, 1967; concentrated field studies were centered in and near the Paint Creek Unit of the forest. Adult turkeys appeared to tolerate the northeastern Iowa climate well, but poults may not be so tolerant. Although reproduction has occurred each year since the introduction, poult survival seemingly has been sporadic, possibly because of differences in weather conditions during the rearing seasons. …

A Consideration Of Pollen, Diatoms And Other Remains In Postglacial Sediments, John D. Dodd, Ruth M. Webster, Gary Collins, Larry Wehr Jan 1968

A Consideration Of Pollen, Diatoms And Other Remains In Postglacial Sediments, John D. Dodd, Ruth M. Webster, Gary Collins, Larry Wehr

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The significance of pollen and diatoms in post-glacial sediments from a shallow bay of Lake Okoboji, Iowa, is considered. The presence of other microfossils is noted with emphasis on those of Cretaceous origin: foraminifera, coccoliths, radiolarians, and hystrichosphaerids. Problems encountered and discussed include recognition of Chrysophyte statospores, redeposition, interpretation of data from lower levels, and reliability of radiocarbon dates applied to organic matter from aquatic vegetation.

The Status Of Science Teaching Facilities In Iowa Museums, Dean F. Straffin Jan 1968

The Status Of Science Teaching Facilities In Iowa Museums, Dean F. Straffin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Only a very few of Iowa's museums offer valuable resources for science teaching. Of the museums recognized in this survey as having a high degree of value in terms of science education, the scope of their potential use as teaching aids is limited to the "natural sciences" embracing such subjects as geology, astronomy, biology, zoology and the field of anthropology. No Iowa museum reviewed in this survey seems to be of any notable value in the teaching of the "hard" sciences such as chemistry or physics, i.e., there are virtually no permanent or semi-permanent "science and industry" type exhibits in …

Studies On Growth And Morphology Of A Trichomonad From The Caecum Of The Pig, Benton W. Buttrey Jan 1968

Studies On Growth And Morphology Of A Trichomonad From The Caecum Of The Pig, Benton W. Buttrey

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The growth and morphology of a caecal porcine trichomonad (probably Tritrichomonas rotunda) were studied from both the trichomonad's natural environment, the pig's caecum, and in culture. Growth of the organism was studied in C.P.L.M. medium at 37° C. After an initial inoculum of 100 organisms per ml. the population rose to 2,900,000 per ml. on day 4 and then decreased to near extinction on day 7. In comparison to the organisms on stained smears made directly from the pig's caecum, the organisms after extensive subculturing (100 subcultures over a period of 20 months) were more elongate and often almost tubular; …

Early Emhryogenesis In Chicken Eggs Of Different Weights, K. L. Arora, L. H. Matsumoto Jan 1968

Early Emhryogenesis In Chicken Eggs Of Different Weights, K. L. Arora, L. H. Matsumoto

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Early embryogenesis in eggs of different weights, from a commercial strain of White Leghorn chickens, was studied. Observations were limited to unincubated blastoderms and embryos after 38 hours of incubation. Large eggs were found to be associated with high frequency of "degenerating" blastoderms as compared to medium and small eggs. Mean width of the unincubated blastoderms was directly related to the egg size. Such a direct relationship was, however, not so obvious in 38-hour embryos, probably because of a high degree of developmental variability associated with large eggs. Embryonic development in medium sized eggs was consistently superior and invariably more …

Testing Frequency And Junior High Students, Lynn W. Glass

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

As a matter of habit I have always given a twelve to fifteen question quiz to my junior high life science students every five to seven classroom days. This was always done on the untested assumption that a more frequent test versus a test given after three to four weeks of study would tend to motivate the student, serve as a learning device, and lessen the amount of cramming and test anxiety experienced by the student.

Why Teach Fungi In High School?, David Mclaughlin

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Student and teacher alike should be more aware of fungi. The reasons I state for this assumption are: fungi are interesting; they play an important role in human affairs; fungi are associated with many areas of biological sciences; they are easily utilized in the classroom; and they are easy to obtain and work with.

Effects Of Medication On Respiration Pattern Of Tranquilized White Mice, Lester C. Shell, Judith A. Burdick, Kenneth Wilson Jan 1967

Effects Of Medication On Respiration Pattern Of Tranquilized White Mice, Lester C. Shell, Judith A. Burdick, Kenneth Wilson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

White mice of varying ages were given a definite amount of the tranquilizer, reserpine, over a three-week period. At the end of this period, respiration rates were determined by use of a physiograph with impedance pneumograph and small animal attachments. Mice were given, in addition to the tranquilizer, varying dosages of different medicinals, and their respiratory pattern was recorded. Such medicinals as thyroxin, streptomycin, vitamins E and C were given and in combination with sulfanilamide, nicotinamide, neonal, kayquinone, hykenone. Effects of multiple medications were noted and recorded. Reserpine, when given in all combinations, lowered the respiratory rate from that recorded …

An Evaluation Of The Dental Annuli Technique For Determining Age Of White-Tailed Deer In Lowa, Arnold J. Sohn Jan 1967

An Evaluation Of The Dental Annuli Technique For Determining Age Of White-Tailed Deer In Lowa, Arnold J. Sohn

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During 1965-66, 47 molars from deer (Odocoileus virginianus) of Iowa and adjoining states were sectioned and examined. An exposure of the cementum pad of the first lower molar of each deer was examined to determine if the gross-sectioning dental annuli method is suitable for determining age of Iowa whitetails. Six bison molars and one elk molar were also examined. Variations in both thickness and clarity of annuli in teeth from Iowa deer made accurate age determination impossible in most cases. Teeth from deer from the Upper Peninsula of Michigan showed more distinct annuli in the root pad of the …

The Eyes Of Lsotelus And Nileus, J. N. Rose Jan 1967

The Eyes Of Lsotelus And Nileus, J. N. Rose

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Facet counts and measurements indicate that growth in the holochroal eyes of Isotelus iowensis and Nileus vigilans is accomplished by addition of new facets at the base, probably during molting, and by increase in the size of the largest facets; the former is the dominant process. The rate of addition of facets appears to be non-uniform in many individuals.

Learning Of Random Shapes And Two Unique Sets Of Concrete Nouns, Don Lewis, William O. Phinney, Maryhelen H. Posey, Karen S. Horr Jan 1967

Learning Of Random Shapes And Two Unique Sets Of Concrete Nouns, Don Lewis, William O. Phinney, Maryhelen H. Posey, Karen S. Horr

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In paired-associates learning, ten random shapes were used as stimuli and two sets of concrete nouns as responses. One set of nouns was high in descriptive appropriateness, da, the other set low. Two different groups learned the two combinations. Later, two additional groups learned with the pairings scrambled. Still later, a replication was made. The replication yielded results which, in most ways, were basically like those obtained originally; but there was an important exception that was related to the learning of the scrambled pairs for nouns of low da value.
