Effects Of Estrogen And Progesterone On Serum Ionized And Total Calcium In Ovariectomized Rats, Edward L. Hatcher, Robert J. Simpson Jan 1974

Effects Of Estrogen And Progesterone On Serum Ionized And Total Calcium In Ovariectomized Rats, Edward L. Hatcher, Robert J. Simpson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The effects of estrogen and estrogen plus progesterone on the serum ionized calcium levels were studied in ovariectomized rats. Concentrations of total and ionized calcium were measured in the serum of rats following three- and six-day treatments with estrogen (01μg daily). Concentrations of ionized calcium in estrogen- treated ovariectomized rats were significantly higher than in controls and significantly higher values were noted in the ionized: total serum calcium ratios in estrogen treated rats as compared with controls. The addition of progesterone to the estrogen treatment procedure resulted in increased total and ionized serum calcium with the ionized values remaining …

Relationships between medically important sexual stages and imperfect forms, and characteristics of the sexual stages in clinical material, are described. Included in this report is a guide to yeast identification which relies on the Luecke plate, a modified Dalmau plate.

Spore Cleavage And The Development Of Wall Ornamentation In Two Myxomycetes, Henry C. Aldrich Jan 1974

Spore Cleavage And The Development Of Wall Ornamentation In Two Myxomycetes, Henry C. Aldrich

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Processes of spore cleavage, spine deposition, and continuous wall formation have been followed in Didymium iridis and Physarum flavicomum, using electron microscopy combined with cytochemistry. The periodic acid silver hexamine (PASH) technique for demonstration of polysaccharide at the ultrastructural level has been employed. Developing sporangia were fixed at 30 min. intervals. Six hours after plasmodia form noticeable blebs on the agar, the surface membrane begins to invaginate and cleaves out spores. Flattened cytoplasmic vesicles originating from dictyosomes contribute membrane to the cleavage furrows as they grow centripetally. As soon as the spores have been cleaved, spine formation begins. Spines are …

Significance Of Endothelial Cell Histidine Decarboxylase Activity, James R. Yarnal, Dennis F. Rolek Jan 1974

Significance Of Endothelial Cell Histidine Decarboxylase Activity, James R. Yarnal, Dennis F. Rolek

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Isolated endothelial cells have been shown to have a 15-fold greater histidine decarboxylase activity than adjacent intima-media homogenates. The significance of this is discussed in regard to microcirculatory regulation and atherogenesis. The newly formed histamine is thought to play a role in microcirculatory regulation by acting on "dilator receptors" at the capillary level. The role of histamine in atherogenesis is thought to be mediated through an increased arterial wall permeability. Specifically, the increased permeability is the result of increased endothelial cell pinocytotic activity and endothelial cell contraction. These contractions eventually cause distinct gaps in the endothelium at the inter-endothelial cell …

Western Iowa Proboscidians, Duane C. Anderson, Patricia M. Williams Jan 1974

Western Iowa Proboscidians, Duane C. Anderson, Patricia M. Williams

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The present paper is a survey of Pleistocene mammoth and mastodon remains from western Iowa. Included are locality data and references to the literature for over 350 specimens from 32 of 41 counties surveyed. Mammoths are found to be more numerous than mastodons, reversing the pattern observed in the woodland areas adjoining the present-day Prairie Peninsula. The first radiocarbon date for the mastodon in Iowa (13,520± 135 B.P.) is reported from Harrison County. None of the localities surveyed have provided any evidence of early man.

While this bibliography is specific to the library at the University of Northern Iowa; its citations cover recognized materials generally available through reference libraries and the U. S. Government. (CKJ)

Evaluation Of The Specific Learning Disabilities Program At The Floyd Elementary School, Thomas V. Daigle Jan 1974

Evaluation Of The Specific Learning Disabilities Program At The Floyd Elementary School, Thomas V. Daigle

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

For the school year 1973-1974, thirteen students at Floyd Elementary School were identified as having specific learning disabilities in grades one and two. They became the experimental group for this study. Another sixteen students in another elementary school in the same district at the same grade levels were also identified as having specific learning disabilities. This group did not have the benefit of a specific learning disabilities program in their school. These students comprised the control group for this study. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effectiveness of the specific learning disabilities program at Floyd in developing …

The Suitors, A Rhymed Farce In Two Acts, Derryl Barr Jan 1974

The Suitors, A Rhymed Farce In Two Acts, Derryl Barr

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

l!!!, Suitors is an original two act rhymed farce that emulates but does not imitate the comedies of Plautus and Terence. Although the play retains many of the basic features native to Roman comedy, its author has modified or disregarded other features deemed less significant, according to the needs of his play. The plot of the play is concerned with the traditional young lovers of Roman comedy, Zero and Blusha, overcoming the obstacles placed between them and the realization of their love. These obstacles include: Zero's impoverishment, which is compounded by his wealthy uncle, Doctor Pomo Pena Cyllicus who, at …

The Fecal Coliform/Fecal Streptococcus Ratio As A Measure Of Bacterial Contamination And Indicator Of Its Source In The Des Moines River, Karen E. Messley, Phyllis J. Kingsbury Jan 1973

The Fecal Coliform/Fecal Streptococcus Ratio As A Measure Of Bacterial Contamination And Indicator Of Its Source In The Des Moines River, Karen E. Messley, Phyllis J. Kingsbury

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The fecal coliform/fecal streptococcus (FC/FS) ratio and total coliform test were used in attempts to determine the degree and source of bacterial contamination present in the Des Moines River between April 18 and November 14, 1970. There were no predictable changes in the FC/FS ratio as the river passed from a rural area, through a metropolitan district, and on to another rural area; however, the total coliform counts did show variation with distance. The failure of the FC/FS ratio to indicate source of contamination was probably due to the highly varying external conditions acting upon the river.

Fauna Of The Middle Little Sioux River And Comparison With Upper And Lower Regions, Clair G. Rausch, Richard V. Bovbjerg Jan 1973

Fauna Of The Middle Little Sioux River And Comparison With Upper And Lower Regions, Clair G. Rausch, Richard V. Bovbjerg

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A species list of macroscopic animals is compiled for the middle portion of the Little Sioux River, Iowa. These are tabulated along with published data from regions of the river above and below. The Little Sioux meanders throughout a valley of largely agricultural landscape; it has a relatively high silt load. Chemical differences are not great; some effects of municipal effluent are noted. The number of species is relatively constant (in the 40-60 range); numbers in the uppermost, intermittent stretches and the lowermost, channelized segment are lower (30- 40). Only about 20% of the species are ubiquitous; trends of diversity …

Comparison Of Vertebrate Communities Of Coralville Reservoir And Cone Marsh, Iowa, William J. Platt Jan 1973

Comparison Of Vertebrate Communities Of Coralville Reservoir And Cone Marsh, Iowa, William J. Platt

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The vertebrates in communities comprising a habitat with unpredictable water levels (the Coralville Reservoir) were compared to those present in communities comprising a habitat without severely fluctuating water levels (Cone Marsh). From data on the species of vertebrates and their relative abundance, it was determined that extensive ecosystem simplification had occurred in communities along the Coralville Reservoir. The major characteristics of this simplification were the following: 1) several species with similar modes of feeding were present at Cone Marsh but only species with generalized food habits were present along the Coralville Reservoir; 2) species at the top of food chains …
