The Strange Case Of The Missing Magazine In The Elementary Media Center, Doris Crandall Jan 1973

The Strange Case Of The Missing Magazine In The Elementary Media Center, Doris Crandall

Graduate Research Papers

In this era when new technological advances are continually being made which bring fresh new hardware and software into the media center is there still a place for magazines? The investigation covered by this paper will attempt to determine whether there is justification for standards to include minimum offerings of magazines, or whether this is a medium that has become passe in the wake of new media.

A Study Of Career Information Materials In Communications And Media For The Junior High School Student, Pearl Fruth Miller

Graduate Research Papers

Because school-based career development programs under the current career education emphasis, are to become integrated into the total curriculum, every person in the school system has a role to play in helping to develop and implement the program. Teachers need materials to assist them in designing programs, and students need resources in their search for values and career information.

Beatrix Potter Through The Years, Carol Porter Jan 1973

Beatrix Potter Through The Years, Carol Porter

Graduate Research Papers

The investigation into the life and work of Beatrix Potter was prompted by interest in and enjoyment of the work of this author. The Tale of Peter Rabbit was the real extent of the acquaintance with Beatrix Potter. Perhaps the appreciation of the art in this book was even more fundamental. A serious desire for children to be familiar with the original story rather than the reproductions was a factor in wanting to know more about this woman and more about what she had produced.

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Iowa Chapter of The Nature Conservancy was organized April 19, 1963, for the purpose of saving natural areas in the state. During the ensuing 10 years, 8 preserves, totaling approximately 275 acres, have been acquired by purchase, gift, bequest and/or lease. They include prairie, marsh, bog, kettle-hole and hardwood forest. These areas are available to scientists, naturalists and those with aesthetic motives.

Effects Of Epinephrine In The Chick Visual System, Robert J. Coppola, Dennis F. Rolek Jan 1973

Effects Of Epinephrine In The Chick Visual System, Robert J. Coppola, Dennis F. Rolek

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Studies of the diffuse electroretinogram (ERG) and evoked responses in the optic lobe in the baby chick have shown that epinephrine produces changes in both. Epinephrine produces enhancement of the a-wave and depression of the b- and d-waves in both intact and isolated eyes. In the optic lobe it produces enhancement of both components of the evoked response. The presence of epinephrine in the vertebrate retina and the optic lobe of chicks suggests that these changes may reflect the involvement of epinephrine in synaptic transmission.

Short-Term Effects Of Shrew Predation Upon Invertebrate Prey Sets In Prairie Ecosystem, William J. Platt, Nigel R. Blakley Jan 1973

Short-Term Effects Of Shrew Predation Upon Invertebrate Prey Sets In Prairie Ecosystem, William J. Platt, Nigel R. Blakley

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During August of 1971, the effects of different densities of shrews (Sorex cinereus) upon the density and species composition of invertebrate prey sets on two prairies in northwestern Iowa were studied. Invertebrates were sampled using pitfall traps set on areas containing known shrew densities. In general, different levels of shrew predation produced certain differences in the prey sets. Increased shrew density was associated with the following prey set characteristics: 1) decreased numerical densities, but not the total biomass of prey sets; 2) decreased species dominance of prey sets; and 3) increased species diversity of the largest prey size subsets of …

Parkinson's Disease, Amantadine Hydrochloride Therapy And Dopa Metabolites, Dee Edward Silver, J. I. Routh, A. L. Sahs, Richard Anderson Jan 1973

Parkinson's Disease, Amantadine Hydrochloride Therapy And Dopa Metabolites, Dee Edward Silver, J. I. Routh, A. L. Sahs, Richard Anderson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In an attempt to clarify the effect of amantadine hydrochloride therapy in Parkinson's disease, dopa metabolites were measured in the urine of 15 patients who were taking this medication. The results indicated that patients on amantadine therapy had lower urinary levels of epinephrine plus norepinephrine than either normal individuals or parkinsonian patients not receiving amantadine. Patients who developed livedo reticularis during amantadine therapy showed a small but significant increase in urinary dopamine levels and a similar decrease in dopac levels, when compared to other patients on amantadine who did not develop livedo reticularis.

The Distribution And Variation Of The Western Earth Snake, Virginia Valeriae Elegans (Kennicott) In Iowa, James L. Christiansen Jan 1973

The Distribution And Variation Of The Western Earth Snake, Virginia Valeriae Elegans (Kennicott) In Iowa, James L. Christiansen

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Western earth snakes, Virginia valeriae elegans, were known in Iowa from only three specimens and considered very rare until the present study. Intense effort to find them in the last two years produced specimens from only the lower Des Moines and Chariton River drainages. The snakes were found to be closely associated with timbered, rocky terrain near streams and to be potentially endangered where timber is permanently removed. Sampling showed two geographic areas in the Des Moines River drainage inhabited by this snake; specimens from the two areas were very similar morphologically. Iowa specimens usually lack the light vertebral stripe …

Male Maturation In Selected Fiction Of Dylan Thomas, Gretchen Jacobson Jan 1973

Male Maturation In Selected Fiction Of Dylan Thomas, Gretchen Jacobson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Dylan Thomas wrote numerous short stories which reveal a completely different aspect of his writing and thinking from that of the highly symbolic, often existential nature of his poetry. He was able, in his short stories, to recall and tell the many-faceted feelings of a boy as he grows from early childhood into young adulthood. Along with the pleasures and hurts experienced, the mischief involved in, and the mistakes made in the process of maturing, Dylan Thomas reveals an underlying humorous, irreverent quality and attitude which seems to imply that the one who does not take himself too seriously can …

Nature As A Reintegrating Force In Shakespeare's Cymbeline, Sydney M. Harrison Jan 1973

Nature As A Reintegrating Force In Shakespeare's Cymbeline, Sydney M. Harrison

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Shakespeare's Cymbeline reveals throughout, in its characters, plot and imagery, the reintegrating and regenerating influences of Nature. The entire play is dominated by Nature--birds, trees, flowers, mountains, streams and other natural elements. The characters are either naturally good or naturally bad; and while the good characters survive and repent of their erring, the bad characters die, as a result of their own evil, absolutely unregenerate. Nature in the play is thus seen as an active force which works both on and through the characters, who at times seem quite passive. In order to illustrate the manifestations of Nature, the poet …

An Evolution In Education Individualization And Learning Activity Packets In Junior High Woodworking, Joseph Wysocki

Graduate Research Papers

The purposes of the study are:

(1) To show how education has evolved throughout American history; it has always taken the best of the past with it and amalgamated- it into its present; individualization has presently advantages which today's society needs to replace conventional programs.

(2) To explain the rationale for individualization.

(3) To give an explanation of the process of making learning activity packages.

(4) To provide learning packets for a course on machines in industrial education, namely lathe and band saw.

Given: The Chance, Claire Marie Patik

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

This paper presents some practical suggestions for motivating the "educationally uninvolved" student on the one hand, and challenging the intellectually gifted student on the other. Teacher-planned, but student-oriented and directed, three courses geared to the pace of the individual student, are described. The net result of two of these courses as approached the past two years, is a reason- able degree of success leading to a strong acceptance on the part of the author of the basic philosophy of "Schools Without Failure.“ The third is a new plan to be introduced in the author's school in the fall of 1971.

True or false: Most desert animals whose life styles keep them out and around during the day are light in color because, as scientists know, light coloration reflects heat and desert animals would naturally evolve in that direction?

Lightning Jan 1972

Lightning

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Lightning supposedly does not strike twice, but once is too much for the more than 100 humans and thousands of animals that die each year from lightning bolts. University of Wisconsin-Madison electrical engineer Theodore Bernstein told scientists gathered at the American Association for the Advancement of Science conference recently how electricity affects living things.

Group Independent Study: A Unique Approach To Undergraduate Research, James E. Privett Jan 1972

Group Independent Study: A Unique Approach To Undergraduate Research, James E. Privett

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Briar Cliff College has a program of independent study in the student's major field during the junior and senior years. In the past the program was used for library research projects and independent laboratory projects. In all cases the projects were truly independent, that is, separate projects for different students with no interconnections between projects. The investigator felt that it would be advantageous if all of the senior chemistry majors and some of the junior chemistry majors who felt ready for the experience would work on the same general research project but with each student studying just one aspect of …

Do Birds Have A Built-In Magnetic Direction Finder?

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

How do birds find their way south in the fall? Some may have a built-in magnetic compass to help them find the way. At least there is an upsurge of scientific interest lately in the possibility that birds can orient themselves for their seasonal migrations by using the earth's magnetic field as a navigation aid.
