School Tours At The Des Moines Center Of Science And Industry, Linda Garten
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
As every teacher knows, some of the best learning experiences take place outside the classroom. This may be especially true when you take your class on a field trip to the Des Moines Center of Science and Industry, where a program has been planned especially for school groups. Science Center school tours provide a motivational experience which stimulates interest in science and technology through participation.

Collegiate Programs For Secondary Students: Meeting The Needs Of The Talented, Edward L. Pizzini, Charles Philp
Collegiate Programs For Secondary Students: Meeting The Needs Of The Talented, Edward L. Pizzini, Charles Philp
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The concept "meeting the needs of the individual student" has been paid lip service for years within educational circles. Whether this has in fact been carried out to any appreciable extent is still open to question. Since the inception of the Secondary Science Training Programs (SSTP) by the National Science Foundation in 1959, hundreds of colleges and universities have sponsored special science programs for high-ability students. However, the Department of Health, Education, and Welfare stated in November, 1973, that fewer than four percent of this country's talented secondary students were being exposed to programs commensurate with their needs (Williams, 1973). …

Sexism And The Newberry Medal, Jean Clingman Huckleberry
Sexism And The Newberry Medal, Jean Clingman Huckleberry
Graduate Research Papers
It is time now to think, time to become conscious and to delve into a sample of Newbery winners. Four Newbery books were chosen for this study in an effort to compare the earlier winners, when sexism was not such a popular issue, with two current winners to discern whether a change had taken place, if indeed a change was necessary. The two older books are Invincible Louisa by Cornelia Meigs, the 1934 winner, and Thimble Summer by Elizabeth Enright, the 1939 winner. The 1930's was chosen because it was a decade in which every Newbery book was written by …
Sports, Sexism, And The Media Specialist, Kathleen Marie Mccrea
Sports, Sexism, And The Media Specialist, Kathleen Marie Mccrea
Graduate Research Papers
The media specialist who is aware of social change is undoubtedly aware that today sexism pervades most institutions of American society. The discriminatory practices-accorded women and men in jobs, in the churches, in the homes, and in the schools have been well-documented. Living one's life on the basis of one's sex, once traditional, is no longer accepted as the way living must be. American legislative bodies have resultingly passed federal and state laws and have proposed the Equal Rights Amendment--all of which would ban discrimination on the basis of sex in specific and general circumstances.
The Crinoid Genus Sygcaulocrinus From Iowa, Harrell L. Strimple
The Crinoid Genus Sygcaulocrinus From Iowa, Harrell L. Strimple
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Attention is called to the synonomy of Ectenocrinus elongatus Thomas and Ladd, 1926, with Sygcaulocrinus typus Ulrich, 1924, both from the Ft. Atkinson Member, Maquoketa Formation (Ordovician), and to the probable bottom dwelling habitat of the species. Comparison is made with some Upper Paleozoic crinoids which are known to have been bottom dwellers. An accident in preparation of a specimen disclosed the solid base of the cup and the solid summit of the proximal columnal, both of which are illustrated.
Forest Communities In Woodman Hollow State Preserve, Iowa, David A. Niemann, Roger Q. Landers Jr.
Forest Communities In Woodman Hollow State Preserve, Iowa, David A. Niemann, Roger Q. Landers Jr.
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The vegetation of this relatively undisturbed forest in central Iowa was sampled by a transect across a stream valley to determine species presence. The presence data were used in delineation of communities and in a computer ordination of the vegetation. Analysis revealed four distinct groupings, or communities, in the preserve: oak-hickory, prairie opening, floodplain and north-facing slope. The communities and their boundaries, determined through comparisons of species distribution diagrams, were also identified in the continuum of plots arrived at by an ordination technique. The communities showed a strong relationship to the topography of the preserve. Species composition of the communities …

Limnological Features Of Some Northwestern Iowa Lakes, John R. Jones, Roger W. Bachmann
Limnological Features Of Some Northwestern Iowa Lakes, John R. Jones, Roger W. Bachmann
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Quantitative information on the morphology, watershed characteristics, water transparency, water chemistry and algal crops of six Iowa lakes is summarized. Lake West Okoboji had less oxygen present in the hypolimnion in 1950-1973 than in 1919-1928, indicating an increase in eutrophication. On the basis of increasing plant-nutrient concentrations, increasing summer algal standing crops and decreasing water transparency, the lakes can be ranked thus: Lake West Okoboji, Big Spirit Lake, Lake East Okoboji (including Upper Gar and Minnewashta) and Lower Gar Lake. These differences among lakes are related to the ratio of watershed area to lake volume, which controls the impact of …

Radiative Heat Loss From Skin To Cold Glass Windows, L. K. Lassahn, G. E. Folk Jr., C. H. Seberg
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Today institutional rooms of many types have single large glass window panes measuring as large as 3.0 meters by 2.5 meters; animal colonies are maintained near these windows in winter, office workers sit by them and thinly clad patients on littercarts are placed beside them. Even though both local air and wall temperature may be 22°C, human subjects beside the windows in winter feel cold because body heat is radiated to the glass which acts as a heat sink. An experiment was conducted during two Iowa winters with measurements of temperatures of outside air, room, wall, undraped glass window, drape-covered …

Public Library Service For The Preschool Child, Betty Bergman
Public Library Service For The Preschool Child, Betty Bergman
Graduate Research Papers
Story telling is considered one of the oldest arts, but the preschool story hour for three to five year olds is relatively new in library work. Research indicates the first story hours for preschoolers began in the public library in the late 1930's and the early 1940's. Only very recently, is there evidence of public library service beyond the traditional print-oriented preschool story hour for the preschool child. For example, such federally funded experimental projects as the one developed and implemented by Erie Public Library, Erie, Pennsylvania in 1972 entitled "Media Library for Preschoolers" and the San Francisco Public Library's …

Occurrence Of A Ctenacanthoid Shark Spine From The Upper Devonian Of North Central Iowa, Markes E. Johnson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Although a diverse, invertebrate fauna is characteristic of the Upper Devonian, Lime Creek Formation, in north central Iowa, fossil fish remains are sparse. A detached and incomplete shark spine with ctenacanthoid features is reported and described. The specimen is the best example of the first occurrences of its kind from Devonian of Iowa. Despite some asymmetry in shape, the spine is interpreted as the cutwater of a dorsal fin. Overall length of the shark is estimated at l-l.5m.

To develop these two purposes, the researcher set up seven objectives to be used as guides for this reading interest study.
1. To survey the reading interests of fourth, fifth, and sixth grade students at Berg Elementary School.
2, To divide the results of this survey into grade level reports. The survey …
Paperback Books In America, Molly S. Britton
Paperback Books In America, Molly S. Britton
Graduate Research Papers
One of the facts of life for a librarian today is the paperback book. As Walter H. Kaiser stated: . . . Paperback books are rapidly assuming a greater importance in public, school and academic libraries because of their uniqueness, quality and low cost. These inherent qualities are finally creating irresistable pressures on librarians to come to terms with this revolution in publishing •••• 1 He also discusses the "need for libraries to be in tune with new trends in publishing and to respond appropriately to the exciting 2 challenge which paperbacks have presented to the profession." So it seems …

An Experimental Study Of The "Doctor Fox Effect", John E. Ware, Reed G. Williams
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Colleges and universities are employing student evaluations of faculty with increasing frequency. On some campuses, the forms are used at the instructor's option and serve primarily as a source of feedback for faculty development purposes. Others require student evaluation of instruction and publish the results in academic "consumer's guides." Still others consider student evaluations of instruction in making decisions with regard to faculty salary increases, retention, tenure and promotion. The optional use of student ratings in order to improve instruction often evolves to the mandatory consideration of student rating data in making decisions about faculty retention, promotion and tenure. As …
Piaget And Science Teaching, Frederick P. De Luca
Piaget And Science Teaching, Frederick P. De Luca
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Piaget's life is as interesting as his theory of intellectual development He was born in France in 1896, published his first article at the age of 11, completed his Ph.D. degree in biology at the age of 21, and subsequently devoted his efforts to study, research and teaching in the psychology of intellectual development. Initially he was interested in exploring the idea that intellectual development resulted from adaptation of the individual to his environment, a concept involving a combination of biology and psychology. As his research progressed, however, he found it necessary to incorporate ideas from the disciplines of formal …
