Consumption Of Foods With Additives And Other Chemicals: Polychemical Use Or Abuse?, Charles A. Frederick Jan 1978

Consumption Of Foods With Additives And Other Chemicals: Polychemical Use Or Abuse?, Charles A. Frederick

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The problem of providing an adequate food supply to feed the world's hungry is and has been a major concern among many scientists, politicians and other leaders representing many sectors of American society. As a result of such concern, every conceivable avenue is now being explored to find new ways whereby new crops and foodstuffs can be raised or developed to meet the world's demand. In Geneva, Switzerland in 1975, some members of the World Health Organization (WHO) indicated that "the continuing.increases in the world population without a comparable increase in the available amount of conventional foodstuffs must stimulate further …

The Endangered And Uncommon Amphibians And Reptiles Of Iowa - Snakes, James L. Christiansen, Russell R. Burken

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Iowa has 23 amphibian and reptilian species whose known populations or ranges within the state are so small as to justify their inclusion in the state's endangered or threatened list (Roosa, 1977). This paper is intended to inform the Iowa scientific teaching community of the plight of these species and to recruit help in gathering information relative to their distribution. Most of the information presented here has been accumulated by Christiansen and Bailey (manuscripts in preparation or in press) in their work on the amphibians and reptiles of Iowa.

Physiologic Studies On The Heart Of Amblema Peruviana (Mollusca, Bivalvia), Susan K. Hoiseth, Richard E. Mayerchak

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Physiologic Studies on the Heart of Amblema peruviana. The heart of the freshwater clam, Amblema peruviana was found to be relatively insensitive to changes in ionic concentrations, and could function in extremely dilute ionic environments. Pharmacologic studies showed a bimodal acetylcholine response, with inhibition at lower concentrations, and excitation at higher concentrations. CI- ion was found to potentiate the depressor acetylcholine response. The resting membrane potential was found to be more negative than that found in comparable marine species.

A Survey Of Water Transparency In Iowa Lakes, John R. Jones, Roger W. Bachmann Jan 1978

A Survey Of Water Transparency In Iowa Lakes, John R. Jones, Roger W. Bachmann

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Measurements of Secchi disk transparency were made in 50 Iowa lakes and reservoirs in the summer of 1975. Averages of July and August readings for individual lakes ranged from 0.1 to 2.7 m. The man-made lakes in the southern part of the state generally had greater transparencies than the natural lakes in the north. Reduced transparency was related more to algal density than to suspended inorganic matter.

Culture, Environment And Technology: Preliminary Results Of An Archaeological Study In Kenya, John R. F. Bower Jan 1978

Culture, Environment And Technology: Preliminary Results Of An Archaeological Study In Kenya, John R. F. Bower

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

During 1975-6, extensive data were collected on late prehistoric cultures in the Central Rift Valley, Kenya, and adjoining regions. A stratified archeological survey was conducted in an area of about 22,000 km2 centering on the Naivasha and Nakuru lake basins. The area was divided into 20 units (strata) defined by elevation and precipitation, and approximately 5% of each unit was targeted for survey. Although the study was aimed primarily at later stone age cultures, no stage of prehistory was excluded from the survey, and the data also reflect earlier stone age and iron age cultures. Just over 100 sites …

Paleopathology Of An Archaic Ossuary At The Lewis Central School Site In Pottawattamie County, Iowa, Alton K. Fisher

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

This Late Archaic ossuary, approximately 2800 years old, was discovered near Council Bluffs, Iowa in 1975 during earth moving operations that partially destroyed it. The fragile skeletal remains of 25 individuals ranging from childhood to old age were recovered from the undisturbed portion. Slight to moderate arthritic changes were observed in 4 of the 18 adult skeletons and one example of spondylolysis was encountered. There was no unequivocal evidence of dental caries. Abrasion of the teeth was severe, starting soon after the teeth erupted, and progressing to serious dental complications in one-third of the adults over 20 years of age. …

Reproductive Biology Of American Robins Following A Dutch Elm Disease Control Program, Gary D. Willson Jan 1978

Reproductive Biology Of American Robins Following A Dutch Elm Disease Control Program, Gary D. Willson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Reproductive biology of the American robin (Turdus migratorius Linnaeus) was studied on the Iowa State University campus during the spring and early summer of 1977. Although the robin breeding population was below that reported for similar habitats elsewhere, it was appreciably larger than during the late 1960's when a major reduction in number of breeding robins at Iowa State followed the use of DDT. Breeding robins, as indicated by number of nests, were more numerous in 1977 than in any year during the height of the Dutch elm disease control program, 1962-70. Basic reproduction parameters such as clutch size and …

The history presented in this article is not intended to be definitive but rather to view the history of the Germ Theory of Disease from a different perspective.

Science And Mainstreaming The Educable Mentally Retarded Students, Muhammad Hanif Jan 1978

Science And Mainstreaming The Educable Mentally Retarded Students, Muhammad Hanif

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The concept of mainstreaming rein forces the belief that all children are capable of learning if education is individualized and attention is given to learning styles, rates of learning, and individual capabilities. It is now widely accepted that children with mild learning impairments should no longer remain segregated and confined to separate classroom situations during their entire day in school. Effective mainstreaming addresses the academic and social needs of all youngsters and functions in the least restrictive environment. The basic assumption that the large majority of handicapped children can be absorbed into regular classrooms with adjustments and adaptations in the …

Facilitating Inductive Reasoning In The Elementary Classroom: A Novel Approach, Gregory Stefanich Jan 1978

Facilitating Inductive Reasoning In The Elementary Classroom: A Novel Approach, Gregory Stefanich

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Educational experiences often tend to leave children with the feeling that there is only one pathway to success. At an early age children are taught to perceive in a way consistent with an adult viewpoint. This is accomplished through repetitive conditioning during which children are taught that an adult, who possesses authority, perceives correctly. As a result, children begin to think in "acceptable" traditional modes and base their behavior on the standards and expectations of others.

Decapods Of Iowa (Part I), Gary Phillips Jan 1978

Decapods Of Iowa (Part I), Gary Phillips

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Decapods are a fascinating group of animals which inhabit most aquatic environments in Iowa. As they are secretive, their habits are not well known. However, they play an important role in Iowa's aquatic communities and are worthy of more attention by biology teachers and their students. Decapods are members of the class Crustacea, a group of arthropods with gills and heavy, crust-like exoskeletons. Crustaceans include such diverse forms as the microscopic water fleas and copepods, the larger sowbugs and amphipods and the more familiar decapods such as crayfish and river shrimp. All decapods have ten walking legs. In Iowa, decapods …

Entry Into Elementary Science Through Live Animals, Stanley L. Weinberg

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Some years ago I did a series of animal behavior film loops for the Ealing Company. The film loops sold well. Their distribution has been taken over by a subsidiary of CBS and they still sell. The series has been a commercial success. But I judge it a pedagogical failure.

On Visual Art And Camouflage, Roy R. Behrens Jan 1978

On Visual Art And Camouflage, Roy R. Behrens

Faculty Work

In a number of books on visual fine art and design [1, 2], there is mention of the kinship between camouflage and painting, but no one has, to my knowledge, pursued it. I have intermittently researched this relationship for several years, and my initial observations have recently been published [3]. Now I have been awarded a faculty research grant from the Graduate School of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to pursue this subject in depth. I am, therefore, collecting documents and personal accounts pertaining to historical and theoretical connections of the kind that are listed below.

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between Seriation And Classification Skills In Young Children, R'Delle Marie Anderson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The results of the Benziger Early Learning Assessment (BELA) classification and seriation subtests previously administered to 359 white, primarily middle-class preschool and primary grade school children were analyzed to determine the degree of relationship, interaction and parallelism between these two cognitive skills across age groups of children. In addition, the existence of any sex differences in performance was examined. The 359 children were grouped into three successive age groups at six-month intervals beginning with the age of four years and six months.

Results indicated that the relationship between seriation and classification, as measured by the BELA, was positive and quite …

A Perceptual Study Of Emotion In Esophageal Speech, Charles Carlisle Ellis Jan 1978

A Perceptual Study Of Emotion In Esophageal Speech, Charles Carlisle Ellis

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study was designed to investigate the perceivability of emotion in esophageal speech. Specifically, the questions under study were: (1) Are naive listeners able to accurately perceive emotional intention from auditory samples of esophageal speech? (2) Are the listeners' judgments of emotion from esophageal speech made with as much confidence as similar judgments made on normal laryngeal speech? A perceptual paradigm was utilized in which listeners made emotion judgments from speech samples of one laryngeal and one esophageal speaker. Two master audiotape recordings were constructed. Each contained a listening corpus of 75 randomly distributed grammatically complete, content-constant sentences. Each audiotape …

El Desarrollo De La Figura De Don Juan En Algunos Autores De La Generacion Del '98, Diógenes Fajardo

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

One of the most attractive figures in Spanish literature is that of Don Juan, whose legendary role is to satisfy his carnal appetites, to deceive women and to mock the dead. Beginning with the Burlador de Sevilla, in which Tirso de Molina makes a universal myth of Don Juan, this thesis attempts to trace his evolution through select works of the Generation of '98. The Romantic Jose Zorrilla, in his Don Juan Tenorio, begins a process of humanization, with the consequent demythifying of the character, when his Don Juan falls in love with Ines. This somewhat humanized universal myth, the …

A Comparison Of The Properties And Strengths Of Adhesives, Merwin Foster

Graduate Research Papers

This investigator teaches a course in junior high industrial arts in which students are exposed to a number of different adhesives. The text used in the industrial arts course classifies the types of adhesives and gives the procedure for using each one, but does not identify the properties of the adhesive or the safety knowledge essential for using them. The several kinds of adhesives used in this course have special properties which determine how and when to use them. To supplement the text and to provide more hands-on activity, a unit could be developed which would help students determine why …
