Animal Stereotypes In Children’S Picture Books, Jeanna L. Massman Jan 1979

Animal Stereotypes In Children’S Picture Books, Jeanna L. Massman

Graduate Research Papers

This research was a content analysis concerned with the stereotyping of animals in children's literature. Five hypotheses were formulated on the topic. These hypotheses examined the relationship between type of characterization (animal as animal, animal as animal but talking, animal as human being) and stereotyping. The relationship between role of character (major or minor) and stereotyping and the degree of stereotyping and realism, in general, prevalent in children's picture books. The animals picked for analysis were bears, foxes, mice and rabbits. The total population of books was taken from five sources and a stratified random sample was drawn. A total …

Marsh Management And Its Relationship To Vegetation, Waterfowl, And Muskrats, Richard A. Bishop, Ronald D. Andrews, Rockney J. Bridges Jan 1979

Marsh Management And Its Relationship To Vegetation, Waterfowl, And Muskrats, Richard A. Bishop, Ronald D. Andrews, Rockney J. Bridges

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Management of Iowa marshes is primarily aimed at waterfowl production with secondary considerations for furbearing animals and non-game wildlife. Difficulty in maintaining the hemi-marsh, which is considered optimum for avian production, prompted this study to examine the interrelationships between duck breeding populations, muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus) population densities, and emergent vegetation. Blue-winged teal (Anas discors) populations responded more closely to changes in percent of the area that contained emergent vegetation than mallards (Anas platyrhynchos). Waterfowl populations were not totally dependent on vegetative conditions of the marsh. Muskrat populations were directly related to habitat quality but fall water levels were influential m …

Epidemiology And Control Of A Head Louse Outbreak In Ames, Iowa, 1976, Russell W. Currier, Wayne A. Rowley, Bruce M. Christensen, Dorothy Sielert

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

At the onset of school in 1976, head lice were recognized by teachers and school nurses in the public and parochial schools in Ames, Iowa. One or more cases were identified from the 9 elementary schools and 3 secondary schools in the community. The greatest prevalence of louse infestations occurred in 2 elementary schools (1 parochial) where 16% and 14%, respectively, of the students were infested. A program was established to screen children and exclude infested individuals from class until they were effectively treated. The community was surveyed to determine the extent of infestation in each household from which at …

Iowa's Climate, Paul Waite Jan 1979

Iowa's Climate, Paul Waite

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Living, as we are in Iowa, we are well aware of the effects upon our activities of the ever changing climate, which is, in itself, the summation of the even more variable daily weather. No one of us can escape the fact that our climate profoundly affects our energy, occupation, recreation, transportation, shelter, and food supply.

Is There A Greater Role For Insects As Food?, G. R. Defoliart Jan 1979

Is There A Greater Role For Insects As Food?, G. R. Defoliart

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The world food deficit has resulted in an expanded effort to find new sources of protein. With significant research efforts directed toward development of oilseed, leaf, fish and single cell concentrates, it is surprising that insects have been almost totally overlooked. They are a natural food for many kinds of animals and they are used widely as food by some human populations, especially in the tropics where they help compensate for the general deficiency in animal proteins, fats and calories. The few biochemical studies done to date indicate that insect protein is of high quality.

Potential Phytoplankton Productivity Of Three Iowa Streams, Joann M. Burkholder-Crecco, Roger W. Bachmann Jan 1979

Potential Phytoplankton Productivity Of Three Iowa Streams, Joann M. Burkholder-Crecco, Roger W. Bachmann

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A series of experiments were conducted to test the hypothesis that the concentrations of suspended algal populations in central Iowa streams are not limited by nutrient concentrations. River water samples with their natural plankton populations were collected from the Des Moines River, Skunk River, and Squaw Creek and were cultured under controlled conditions without the addition of nutrients. In 23 of 24 experiments significant increases in algal chlorophyll a were found with an average replication factor of 14 times. The data indicate that nutrients are not limiting suspended algal densities in the streams. A second series of experiments indicated that …

Histology Of The Embryonic Chick Mandible Following X-Irradiation, Barbara Ann Bailey Walton Jan 1979

Histology Of The Embryonic Chick Mandible Following X-Irradiation, Barbara Ann Bailey Walton

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The sensitive period for the induction by x-irradiation of reduced mandibles in chick embryos was determined to be during the 5th day of incubation. Variations in mandibular anomalies can be correlated with the incidence and frequency of cell deaths. As exhibited by control mandibles, cell deaths around the distal ends of Meckel' s cartilages through the 7th day may aid distal cartilage elongation. The variety of anomalies resulting from teratogenic doses is due, in part, to differences in sensitivity between embryos and their ability to recover from radiation damage. Bone development (initial ossification) in experimental embryos was retarded from 12 …

Strip Mining, Peromyscus And Other Small Mammals In Southern Iowa, Janet R. Voight, David C. Glenn-Lewin Jan 1979

Strip Mining, Peromyscus And Other Small Mammals In Southern Iowa, Janet R. Voight, David C. Glenn-Lewin

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Small mammal presence, diversity and reproduction were compared from summer 1975 to summer 1976 on abandoned coal strip mine spoils and unmined land in southern Iowa. More species were trapped on the unmined area, while the relative dominance of Peromyscus spp. on mined land was greater. Peromyscus populations on mined land exhibited a shorter breeding season than on unmined land. Other population parameters did not show clear differences between the areas.

Influence Of Coal Mining On Water Quality In Marion And Mahaska Counties, Iowa, Thomas P. Nesler, Roger W. Bachmann Jan 1979

Influence Of Coal Mining On Water Quality In Marion And Mahaska Counties, Iowa, Thomas P. Nesler, Roger W. Bachmann

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

In the spring and summer of 1976, a water-sampling program was carried out on the streams of Marion and Mahaska counties, where a significant portion of the coal mining in Iowa has occurred. Streams with underground mines or combinations of underground and surface mines in their watersheds had decreased values for alkalinity and increased values for specific conductance and sulfates, indicating the presence of acid mine drainage. Unless reclamation procedures are incorporated into standard mining operations, an expansion of Iowa coal mining could lead to an increase in the severity of this problem.

A Case Study For The Governor's Science Advisory Council: The Nitrite Controversy, Robert W. Hanson Jan 1979

A Case Study For The Governor's Science Advisory Council: The Nitrite Controversy, Robert W. Hanson

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Governor's Science Advisory Council (GSAC) was established by executive order in April 1977 to provide objective scientific advice and information to the Governor or the state agencies. A major problem in science advising to government at all levels is the credibility of information sources. The controversy concerning a possible ban on the use of nitrite in the curing of meat products provided an opportunity for the GSAC to demonstrate its potential as an unbiased representative of the scientific community.

Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy And The Moral Criticism Of Rhetoric, W. Thomas Duncanson Jr. Jan 1979

Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy And The Moral Criticism Of Rhetoric, W. Thomas Duncanson Jr.

Iowa Journal of Communication

Writers in the field of rhetorical criticism have long been divided over the role of moral judgment in their work. Among the rhetorical theorists most successful in incorporating moral judgments in their writings are those who, like Richard Weaver and Kenneth Burke, begin with the idea that communication is a moral act and not merely a container for moral content. Eugen Rosenstock-Huessy is a writer in this vein. Unfortunately, his work has been slighted, and it has been ignored entirely as a system for generating widely acceptable moral criticism of rhetorical acts.

Citizens-Band Radio Has A Message For Us, William C. Clark

Iowa Journal of Communication

Not since the days of Prohibition has there been such widespread, guilt-free violation of the law. Not since the hula-hoop has a manufactured device provided so much pleasure for the citizenry. Not since the development of the tailor-made cigarette has a device made social status so easy to acquire and given so many people the feeling of being members of a happy, witty, trouble-free society. The citizens-band radio (CB) does it all.

The Ethics Of Business And Herbert Hoover’S Internationalism, Robin L. Hamilton Jan 1979

The Ethics Of Business And Herbert Hoover’S Internationalism, Robin L. Hamilton

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Is it possible that someone possessed the attributes of a humanitarian and yet acted in such a way that those same characteristics were lost? Could an administrator deal with the plight of the unfortunate members of society and fail to recognize the causational factors of that plight? It would appear illogical to reason that the correct responses to the above questions could be in the affirmative, and yet the affirmative answers seemed to be applicable to the life and career of Herbert Hoover. The time-line ran from West Branch, Iowa, in 1874, ending in that same village in 1964.

An Analytical Comparison And Contrast Of The Automobile Rotary Combustion Engine And The Reciprocating Engine, Eric K. Earle Jul 1978

An Analytical Comparison And Contrast Of The Automobile Rotary Combustion Engine And The Reciprocating Engine, Eric K. Earle

Graduate Research Papers

The ReCE, although possessing many good characteristics as a motive source of power, is still somewhat far from achieving the desired efficiency in man's quest for better economical and practical means of transportation, due to the lack of higher speeds and its inability to burn all of the fuel admitted as a result of its large number of moving parts, their weight, size and reciprocating motion.

The design and development of the RCE has overcome many of the above problems inherent in the ReCE, and, therefore, has the potential of replacing the ReCE as the major source of automotive power …

The Endangered And Uncommon Amphibians And Reptiles Of Iowa - Salamandars, James L. Christiansen, Russell R. Burken

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Iowa has 23 amphibian and reptilian species whose known populations or ranges within the state are so small as to justify their inclusion in the state's endangered or threatened list (Roosa, 1977). This paper is intended to inform the Iowa scientific teaching community of the plight of these species and to recruit help in gathering information relative to their distribution. Most of the information presented here has been accumulated by Christiansen and Bailey (manuscripts in preparation or in press) in their work on the amphibians and reptiles of Iowa.

Chameleons In The Classroom, David Fagle, Nancy Walden

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

What can you get at a pet shop that will change its color and your science teaching? You can get Anolis carolinensis, a unique and interesting reptile that has become a commonplace object of study in many progressive science classrooms. Anolis carolinensis, the American chameleon is not a "true" chameleon. "True" chameleons exhibit more dramatic color changes, but children are charmed and intrigued by the behavior and color changes exhibited by this American reptile.
