Water Source Of Big Spring Trout Hatchery, Clayton County, Iowa, Neill Heitmann
Water Source Of Big Spring Trout Hatchery, Clayton County, Iowa, Neill Heitmann
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A large naturally flowing spring emitting from the Galena Dolomite Formation in the valley wall of the Turkey River, 8 km northwest of Elkader, is the source of water supply for Big Spring Trout Hatchery. Precipitation in northern Clayton County infiltrating the bedrock and moving laterally along crevices and cavities in the dolomite rock is the principal recharge source for the spring. Numerous sinkholes as far as 13.9 km to the north and northeast capture surface runoff and funnel water to the spring. Chemical dyes and plastic spheres were used to trace the groundwater movement from the sinkholes to the …
The Effects Of Anxiety On Oral Reading Miscues, Marlene Sprain
The Effects Of Anxiety On Oral Reading Miscues, Marlene Sprain
Graduate Research Papers
Anxiety is a condition which is hard to define even though everyone has experienced it to some degree and at one time or another. One problem involved in defining it is to determine whether it is a long- or short-term characteristic. This is an important point because if anxiety is a long-term personality trait we need to find out which persons are anxious, how they got that way, and how they are coping with the condition. If, on the other hand, anxiety is merely a temporary state, we need to determine during which situations the anxiety is aroused and how …
A Study Of The Relationships Between Measures Of Fluid And Piagetian Intelligence, James Ray Hurley
A Study Of The Relationships Between Measures Of Fluid And Piagetian Intelligence, James Ray Hurley
Graduate Research Papers
Francis Galton (1869) was the first to suggest the scaling of human general intelligence, distinguishing fourteen grades ranging from the most illustrious and eminent to imbeciles and idiots. He sought to show that such intelligence was mainly hereditarily determined, although he was awe.re that most brilliant individuals were reared in intellectually stimulating environments. Charles Spearman, an officer in the British Army and a man of great military tradi tion, likewise became interested in the nature of intelligence. Comparatively late in life he became a professor at the University of London, where he built a world-famous psychological research center. Spearman asked …
Fantasy Genre Books For Middle School Students: A Selected Annotated Bibliography, Loretta K. Talley
Fantasy Genre Books For Middle School Students: A Selected Annotated Bibliography, Loretta K. Talley
Graduate Research Papers
This survey of children's literature was undertaken to determine if a collection of 150 books meeting a fantasy genre definition could be developed as a basis for a mini-course for Edison Middle School students in Waterloo, Iowa. For this study, fantasy genre literature was defined as the literature of fantastic tales and chimerical tales, having been created by an author and having a world of wonders. Living toys, strange children, witches, supernatural animal figures, mythical worlds, combat between good and evil, journeys through time and space, and the "door" were identified as fantasy genre motifs.
The initial collection of 883 …

Consequences Of Conquest Upon Roman Political, Social, Economic, Cultural And Architectural Development During And After The Punic Wars, 2nd Century B.C., Deborah Carol Blinka
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The Roman conquest of the eastern Mediterranean (264-100 B.C.) was one of the more important events in Roman history. The expansion of Carthage had been brought to a halt when the genius of the Roman general Scipio enabled the Romans to defeat the Carthaginians decisively on their own ground, at Zama in North Africa. With Carthage subdued, Rome set out systematically forestalling the rise of any potentially dangerous rival in Greece or the Near East. Rome gradually filled the power vacuum left by the disintegrating Hellenistic states and for the first time in history, the whole Mediterranean area was to …
An Investigation Of Reversed Phase Thin-Layer Chromatography For The Separation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Marvin V. Gibson
An Investigation Of Reversed Phase Thin-Layer Chromatography For The Separation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, Marvin V. Gibson
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
A reversed phase thin-layer chromatographic method employing the chemically bonded octadecylsilane as the stationary phase (Whatman KC18), has been investigated for the simultaneous analysis of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) and nitrogen heterocyclics (aza-arenes). Separations of mixtures of reference compounds were obtained with a number of mobile phases (developers) and the separation efficiencies depending on the individual solvent components were summarized. Double development and twodimensional thin-layer chromatography were used for identification purposes involving several environmental samples. This method, coupled with selective excitation fluorescence spectrometry, proved to be effective for the quantitative measurements of selected PAH and aza-arene compounds. The analytical procedures …

Noise Pollution In The Industrial Arts Laboratory, James A. Sundell
Noise Pollution In The Industrial Arts Laboratory, James A. Sundell
Graduate Research Papers
Industrial arts instructors have always recognized the need for a pleasant and safe environment in their laboratories. Advancements in technology have increased noise pollution in this environment.
Sounds have a useful and important place in the laboratory; also, they can have adverse effects. The instructor can tell immediately if a machine is not performing correctly by the sound it emits, while the operation of the same machine can distort an important verbal communication. Excessive decibel levels may be generated at different times threatening the psychological and physiological well-being of teachers and students (Brown, 1979; Hicks, 1973; Swogger, 1973).

Warning - Strong Oxidant!, Howard Lyon
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Even the most casual survey of the uses of hydrogen peroxide would demonstrate that it is considered to be one of the safest oxidizing reagents available. Hundreds of useful commercial applications employ dilute H202 - water mixtures for bleaches, bubbling agents, mild cleansers and other gentle oxidation processes. The use of hydrogen peroxide in the teaching laboratory is recommended as far safer than the use of the pennanganates, nitrates, dichromates, chlorates and perchlorates which might otherwise be employed. The 3% solution is used to clean open cuts or employed as mouthwash. Analytical laboratories, employing higher concentrations, would …

Certain protozoa have often been the cellular animals of choice for research and teaching in the past 100 years. In 1926, Asa Schaeffer (20) placed "the amoeba" at the pinnacle for animals that serve as primary research tools, along with the dog and the frog. Paramecium (one or more of its species) and Euglena (one or more of its species) are other protozoa (the latter, also an alga) well-known and oft-employed in both teaching and research. In the past 40 years, however, another protozoan has gained prominence in research, equalling - even superseding - the three mentioned above. Its generic …

Birds Of Some Iowa Wetlands In Relation To Concepts Of Faunal Preservation, Mitlon W. Weller
Birds Of Some Iowa Wetlands In Relation To Concepts Of Faunal Preservation, Mitlon W. Weller
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Forty-one species of birds nested in the prairie-wetlands complex of Dewey's Pasture during the period 1962 to 1974. Numbers of pairs and nests were recorded annually for the ducks and other waterbirds that dominated the avifauna, but observations on terrestrial species were less detailed and only frequency of occurrence data are presented. These data on bird use of a relict pothole area demonstrate the dynamics of bird populations in relation to habitat conditions. Abundance and diversity of waterbirds were positively correlated with increasing water depth. Problems of conserving typical avifaunas in small wetlands units surrounded by intensive agriculture are discussed …
