Characteristics Of Farms And Farmers In Children's Literature, Mary Ann Emerick

Graduate Research Papers

This study examines twenty-three children's fiction books written about farmers and farms. Two major questions were investigated: (1) What are the characteristics of farms and farming that are given in the text and illustrations of children's fiction books, grade K-6? and (2) What are the demographic and attitudinal characteristics of farmers that are given in the text and illustrations of children's fiction books, grade K-6?

The research method used for this paper was content analysis of books listed in the Subject Guide to Children's Books in Print, 1978-1979, under the subject heading of Agriculture--Fiction and Farm Life--Fiction. Each book was …

Trailing The Trilobite, Joseph H. Brown Jan 1980

Trailing The Trilobite, Joseph H. Brown

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Rocky ledges jutting forth to form stony outcrops along -Iowa's streams, roadcuts and hillsides provide evidence of ancient environments entirely different from the rolling prairies of today. These rocky ledges were laid down in the bottoms of vast shallow seas which covered most of Iowa in its past history. Over great lengths of time, the waters swept back and forth, rising and subsiding, leaving a record in the layers of the earth's materials deposited in their depths. As the seas rose and fell, the deposits buried one another and became layers of conglomerate, sandstone, shale and gypsum. Minerals of calcite, …

The Maligned And Misunderstood North American Badger, Richard Lampe Jan 1980

The Maligned And Misunderstood North American Badger, Richard Lampe

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The common though highly elusive North American badger is seldom seen and often misunderstood. When badgers are encountered by man, the experience is frequently startling to both parties. Impressions based on such limited and stress-filled information are biased. For example, it is widely believed that this member of the family Mustelidae (which also includes skunks, otters and weasels) is vicious, mean and aggressive. However, personal experience with badgers gained from studies over the past 10 years indicates that, although quite capable of defending themselves, badgers are shy, secretive and good bluffers.

Water Hyacinth And Overfishing Problems On An Indonesian Lake, Kenneth D. Carlander Jan 1980

Water Hyacinth And Overfishing Problems On An Indonesian Lake, Kenneth D. Carlander

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Water hyacinths, Eichhornia crassipes, and floating grass islands have been a serious problem for more than 50 years on Rawa Pening, a 2500-ha lake in central Java. Fish harvest increased with control of the plants in 1932-42 and 1951-56 but decreased as plants again increased in abundance. Control measures since 1962 have maintained open water but have not eliminated the problem. Hydrilla verticillata becomes abundant as the surface is cleared of water hyacinths. Hydrilla shelters Macrobrachium shrimp and other aquatic organisms, important to fish, and also is harvested for pig food. Annual fish yield dropped from about 530 kg/ha in …

Objective Measuring Techniques Applied To Illustrations In Children’S Picture Storybooks, Diane Brown Harrington Jan 1980

Objective Measuring Techniques Applied To Illustrations In Children’S Picture Storybooks, Diane Brown Harrington

Graduate Research Papers

This research study was designed to determine if found and developed objective measuring techniques, using children's preferences and interests, were effective when applied to the illustrations of picture storybooks.

Using only fourteen books written and illustrated by Stan and Jan Berenstain, the five methods used to gather data for this study were: 1) applying the Picture Potency Formula to obtain the language stimulation value of each book; 2) Using a kindergarten child to determine if the essence of the story can be told by a child from lookin0 at the illustrations; 3) recording the number of times the main character(s) …

Philosophical Perspectives On Human Communication, Carrol C. Arnold Jan 1980

Philosophical Perspectives On Human Communication, Carrol C. Arnold

Iowa Journal of Communication

Anyone who makes assertions about the nature and significance of human communication will wittingly or unwittingly make commitments to fundamental assumptions about what it is to be a human being. If we do not pay attention to what these assumptions and commitments are, we are apt to wander into fantasy or self-contradiction or both. Dr. Hugh Blair, the Scottish man of letters, is a handy example. In the eighteenth century Blair promulgated the already popular theory that "taste" is a primary feature of all discourse. Whatever is said will reflect good, poor, or indifferent "taste." "Good taste" is the product …

Productivity Of Canada Geese In Northwestern Iowa, Thomas A. Nigus, James J. Dinsmore Jan 1980

Productivity Of Canada Geese In Northwestern Iowa, Thomas A. Nigus, James J. Dinsmore

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Productivity, gosling habitat use, and survival of giant Canada geese (Branta canadensis maxima) in northwestern Iowa were studied in 1977 and 1978. Arrival of geese on the breeding grounds in March coincided with the first open water in smaller wetlands. Initial laying dates (25 March 1977 and 26 March 1978) were probably influenced by photoperiod, timing of arrival at the breeding grounds, and ice conditions. The density of successful nests in 1978 averaged.12 nests/ha of wetland. Nest density was highest in cover class 2 wetlands. The large mean clutch size of 6.0 eggs for 185 nests suggested that most of …

Roots, Richard F. Trump

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

When I found a way of giving my students a better view of what goes on underground, they started asking better questions, and they found better ways of answering those questions. That was the most exciting aspect of some work I was doing for the Agricultural Research Service (ARS). My assignment was to find ways of using, in the classroom, some of the techniques developed by Dr. Howard Taylor and his associates at Iowa State University involving investigations into root growth.

The Decapod Crustaceans Of Iowa, Gary S. Phillips

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

From March 1977 to September 1978, a survey was conducted to determine the species of decapod crustaceans present in Iowa and their distribution. During this time period, all of lowa's 99 counties were surveyed. A total of 2390 specimens representing 500 lots were collected from 492 different sites. An additional 1944 specimens were examined from existing collections. Seven species of Cambaridae (Cambarus diogenes diogenes Girard, Orconectes immunis (Hagen), Orconectes iowaensis Fitzpatrick, Orconectes rusticus (Girard), Orconectes virilis (Hagen), Procambarus acutus acutus (Girard), and Procambarus gracilis (Bundy)), and a single species of Palaemonidae (Palaemonetes kadiakensis (Rathbun)), were identified. Career Information By Major [1980], University Of Northern Iowa. Career Center.

History of Education Book Gallery

It is essential in a successful career planning or job hunting campaign to have access to information concerning career alternatives, government opportunities, sources for job leads, professional associations, and available library resources. In an effort to effectively disseminate that information to students and their faculty advisors the UNI Career Center has developed the Career Information by Major. This booklet is a compilation of individual departmental handouts available to students who want to know what career opportunities are available in their major.
