The Iowa Academy: A Responsive And Responsible Body, Robert W. Hanson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
When I first decided in February, 1981 to retire from the position of Executive Director after 16 years, it was purely an intellectual statement, devoid of the consciousness of separation that would eventually take place. The Annual Meeting of 1983 at Luther College brought the reality of the termination vividly to my consciousness, and the many tributes that I received in person and by letter reminded me of just how long 16 years really is. The years since 1967 have provided a constantly changing panorama of faces, personalities, and events that have moved the Academy along toward greater effectiveness and …

Habitat Selection By Small Mammals On The Shoreline Of A Flood Control Lake In South-Central Iowa, Paul D. Heideman, John B. Bowles, Keith R. Erickson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
An unusually high water level on a flood control lake shore in Iowa altered the species composition, relative density and spatial relationships of most small mammals. Peromyscus maniculatus disappeared from the study site during flooding but was the earliest invader after water had receded. A few Reithrodontomys megalotis also returned. Sorex cincereus and Blarina brevicauda did not immediately reinhabit recently flooded areas. Miccrotus ochrogaster disappeared from the site. Peromyscus leucopus and M. pennsylvanicus persisted on the unaffected portion during flooding. Both P. maniculatus and P. leucopus reestablished spatial relationships similar …

The Measurement Of Po2 By O2 Electrode In The Presence Of Changing Pco2, Ellen M. Lackermann, Ferdinand Kreuzer, G. Edgar Folk Jr., Hans-Peter Kimmich
The Measurement Of Po2 By O2 Electrode In The Presence Of Changing Pco2, Ellen M. Lackermann, Ferdinand Kreuzer, G. Edgar Folk Jr., Hans-Peter Kimmich
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Studies on the transport of O2 and CO2 in the alveoli and blood have focused on simultaneous measurements of the two gases with classical instruments; an interaction between the two gases has been assumed (see Bohr Effect and Rahn-Otis Plot). Nevertheless, of late years with wide use of the Kimmich-Kreuzer Oxygen Electrode in liquids and gases, the measurements have included oxygen alone. These small (2mm) polarographic catheter electrodes have been used in both physiologic and bioengineering applications. Within a particular range of polarization voltage, the electrode current is limited by O2 diffusion across a membrane; i.e., at …
A Well-Preserved Ground Sloth (Megalonyx) Cranium From Turin, Monona County, Iowa, H. Gregory Mcdonald, Duane C. Anderson
A Well-Preserved Ground Sloth (Megalonyx) Cranium From Turin, Monona County, Iowa, H. Gregory Mcdonald, Duane C. Anderson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A well-preserved cranium of a large Pleistocene ground sloth (Megalonyx jeffersonii) is described in detail and compared with six other North American Megalonyx crania. Although the morphology of the Iowa specimen compares favorably with all others, the descending flange of the zygomatic arch is unusual in that it is sharply deflected to the posterior. This suggests a more horizontal component to the masseter. Two new and six previous Iowa records of Megalonyx in Iowa are reported or reexamined.

Pedigree Style In Teaching Genetics, Wilmer J. Miller
Pedigree Style In Teaching Genetics, Wilmer J. Miller
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
A single pedigree style, the arrow or network method, is presented that is generally superior to, or as useful as, the other commonly used methods in teaching genetics. It is adaptable to all uses of pedigrees and necessary in some. Clarity of inbred relationships, generation overlap, and lack of the need for right angle turns are the major advantages.
Inheritance Of Resistance To The First And Second Broods Of The European Corn Borer In Corn, M. Sadehdel-Moghaddam, P. J. Loesch Jr., A. R. Hallauer, W. D. Guthrie
Inheritance Of Resistance To The First And Second Broods Of The European Corn Borer In Corn, M. Sadehdel-Moghaddam, P. J. Loesch Jr., A. R. Hallauer, W. D. Guthrie
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The European corn borer is one of the most destructive insect pests of corn. Our objective was to determine the inheritance of host resistance in corn to the first and second broods of the European corn borer with Design III and S1 progeny analyses. All estimates of additive and dominance genetic variances were significantly different from zero except for the dominance variance for second-brood cavity counts. Additive genetic variance, however, was the major component of the total genotypic variance in the F2 population for all traits. Average level of dominance was in the partial range for the date …
Influence Of Simulated Harvest On Iowa Wild Turkey Populations, Willie J. Suchy, William R. Clark, Terry W. Little
Influence Of Simulated Harvest On Iowa Wild Turkey Populations, Willie J. Suchy, William R. Clark, Terry W. Little
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Computer models were used to simulate autumn harvest of a wild turkey (Meleagris gallopava silvestrus) population in Iowa. Parameters were based on estimates of survival rates, fecundity rates, and age and sex ratios from field studies in mixed forest-farmland from 1977 to 1981. Simulations with average survival and fecundity parameters resulted in a population growth rate of 4% per year. If female survival rates were reduced 4.8% or fecundity was reduced 13.9%, the population became stationary. Interaction of hunting and non-hunting mortality was incorporated according to 3 hypotheses: additive, completely compensatory, and compensatory mortality rates up to a threshold. Estimated …
An Investigation Of The Phenomenon Of School Phobia, Juliet Ocenar Ruiz
An Investigation Of The Phenomenon Of School Phobia, Juliet Ocenar Ruiz
Graduate Research Papers
School phobia is a perennial problem but very little has been written about it in recent years. The problem of school phobia seemed to have gained more attention in the 1950's and 1960's, with greatest concern for the adolescents' affliction in the 1970's. The purpose of this paper is to revive the reader's consciousness to this problem and to encourage understanding and empathy for children exhibiting a pathological fear of attending school.
Behavioral Tendencies Of Known Catalog Buyers, Sandra J. Hendrickson
Behavioral Tendencies Of Known Catalog Buyers, Sandra J. Hendrickson
Graduate Research Papers
According to the Direct Mail/Marketing Association, more than five billion catalogs were mailed in 1982 and mail orders generated approximately 40 billion dollars in consumer sales mostly from catalogs. This is a very large increase compared to earlier years (Time, 1982). The increase in catalog consumers is due to several factors, one being the sophistication of computer systems. Computers have provided catalog films with a method of targeting their mailings to specific groups or types of individuals.

The lure of the motion picture is one that touches millions of people worldwide. It transcends political, religious, cultural, and national boundaries. The basic component of this lure is the actual experience of viewing a motion picture. People go to the cinema for many reasons, mainly for entertainment, but watching a motion picture also satisfies certain psychological needs such as belonging, participation, and fantasy role playing. For the majority of people the role of viewer is their only involvement with motion pictures. There is, however, a select group of people for whom the act of viewing is merely a catalyst …

The Personal Profile System: A Psychographic Tool For Direct Marketing Of Non-Profit Organizations, Barbara Miller
Graduate Research Papers
Psychographics or lifestyle measures have become a useful means of identifying audiences along psychological dimensions. They are valuable segmentation tools and excellent descriptors of consumers for direct marketers. (Burns, Harrison, 6, p. 32). It's a beneficial way of narrowing direct marketing efforts to those people who are truly interested in specific products or services.
Iowa's Self-Trained Paleontologists, Wayne I. Anderson, William M. Furnish
Iowa's Self-Trained Paleontologists, Wayne I. Anderson, William M. Furnish
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Charles Wachsmuth (1829- 1896), merchant, Frank Springer (1848-1927), attorney, and Burnice Beane (1879- 1966), farmer, all made significant contributions in their studies of Iowa crinoids, although none of the three completed formal courses in geology or paleontology. Herbert Belanski was a young man, just starting to make major contributions to Iowa geology and paleontology, when he died in 1919. Belanski possessed only a high school degree, but he was recognized as an expert on Devonian paleontology. His collections from the Lime Creek and Shell Rock formations are noteworthy. At the time of his death, Belanski served as a curator in …
A Study Of Kindergarten Attendance Patterns, Clark William Goltz
A Study Of Kindergarten Attendance Patterns, Clark William Goltz
Graduate Research Papers
In 1956 the first kindergarten was established in the city of Watertown, Wisconsin by Margarethe Meyer Schurz, a disciple of Friedrich Froebel. (Cutright, 1981) The kindergarten and kindergarten curriculum were designed by Froebel in Germany in the 1830's and 1840's. The original kindergarten concept was established for preschoolers three to seven years old. Smith (1971) states that the kindergarten was a system of intellectual, moral and physical education, which reflected pedagogical principles considered foolish and extreme in the middle of the 19th century, namely the significance of play and the need to base the curriculum on the child's interest and …
An Electromyographic Comparison Of Straight-Leg Raising Exercises From Sitting And Supine Positions, Marchelle Marie Cuppett
An Electromyographic Comparison Of Straight-Leg Raising Exercises From Sitting And Supine Positions, Marchelle Marie Cuppett
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The prevention of quadriceps atrophy during prolonged knee immobilization is of concern to the athletic trainer or the physical therapist. Several exercises have been used in the past for rehabilitation during this period of immobilization. Selection of an exercise which produces the greatest amount of muscular activity is beneficial as it would produce a greater training effect on the muscles and prevent extensive atrophy from occurring. The most common exercise used in rehabilitation of the quadriceps during this period of immobilization is the supine straight-leg raising exercise. This exercise, however, has some shortcomings in producing an increased amount of muscular …
A Test Of Max Weber’S Theory Of Charismatic Leadership In A Third World Case: Cuba’S Fidel Castro, Leida Javier-Vivoni
A Test Of Max Weber’S Theory Of Charismatic Leadership In A Third World Case: Cuba’S Fidel Castro, Leida Javier-Vivoni
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
In this thesis a limited test of Max Weber's theory of charisma was conducted by applying it to the case of a Third World leader, that of Fidel Castro. This was achieved by reviewing and analyzing Weber's original formulation, the various interpretations of it that followed, and the different ways Weber's theory has been reconstructed for the purpose of guiding research on charisma. Ralph Hummel's (1972) and Richard Fagen's (1965) separate sets of propositions, based on reconstructions of different parts of Weber's theory, were chosen to guide the research on Castro's case. The interpretive data generated by this process constituted …

Osmosis: A Different Approach, Dennis Sievers
Osmosis: A Different Approach, Dennis Sievers
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Traditional experiments on osmosis usually include a study of the glucose-water experiment but lack a connection to a living system. This is a fine experiment but fails to give students a true picture of what is occurring in a living system. The following experiments describe a method of examining osmosis and some factors that can have an effect on it in a living blood cell.
Aerospace Education Council Of Iowa, Kenneth W. Sand
Aerospace Education Council Of Iowa, Kenneth W. Sand
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Few people know that there is an Aerospace Education Council of Iowa, though it is entering its 25th year of existence. On December 17, 1956, almost a year before Sputnik, Iowa established an Air-Age Education Council under the auspices of the State Department of Public Instruction. This organization was to sponsor appropriate research, suggest needed curriculum change, and encourage the incorporation of air-age information in all areas of the curriculum, particularly in the social, physical and natural sciences.
Frog Population On Decline

The frog for many people represents a most memorable event of their high school days. But the frog soon may be a thing of the past in the high school biology class. There is a growing frog shortage.
Single Cell Protein: The Future Food, D. O. Hitzman
Single Cell Protein: The Future Food, D. O. Hitzman
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The population of the world is now over 4 billion, with approximately two-thirds of this population being in regions characterized as being underdeveloped. Today there are 200,000 more people than there were yesterday, with about 10,000 persons estimated as dying each week from lack of food. By the year 2000, it is estimated that 6 to 7 billion persons will live in the world. Current global surveys measuring food supply per person indicate severe undernutrition (too few calories) and an unbalanced diet (too little protein). The most critical single shortage in the world food supply is protein, vital to the …

High-Density Use Of Septic Systems, Avon Lake, Iowa, Karen Mancl, Craig Beer
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Avon Lake, a rural-residential subdivision located southeast of Des Moines, has mostly summer cabins around a remnant gravel quarry. Surface material in the area is sand. Each of the homes has a shallow sand-point well for a water supply and a septic system for sewage treatment. Septic systems were examined for evidence of failure, house-to-house surveys were performed, and well water samples were taken. Fifty percent of the septic systems have been operating satisfactorily for more than 20 years. Only one of 68 well water samples contained fecal coliform bacteria. Thirty-six samples exceeded the nitrate standard, the highest being 25.6mg/1 …
