Media And Communication Considerations To Influence The Buying Decisions Of Farmers, Joel C. Geske Jan 1984

Media And Communication Considerations To Influence The Buying Decisions Of Farmers, Joel C. Geske

Graduate Research Papers

The agricultural market is an extremely large and extremely important segment of our economy. Agriculture, and the support services provided to agriculture, account for a $1.2 trillion market. This figure is roughly equal to ALL the assets of the Fortune 500 companies combined (Wefald, 1982). Because of the size of this market, it is important, as marketers, to understand the farmer, his media habits and his buying habits. It is important to know what factors carry the most weight when the farmer's decision making process gets underway. It is essential to know how to reach the farmer in each of …

Geologic Overview Of The Paleozoic Plateau Region Of Northeastern Iowa, George R. Hallberg, E. Arthur Bettis Iii, Jean C. Prior Jan 1984

Geologic Overview Of The Paleozoic Plateau Region Of Northeastern Iowa, George R. Hallberg, E. Arthur Bettis Iii, Jean C. Prior

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Steep slopes, varied slope aspects, and entrenched stream valleys carved into Paleozoic-age rocks provide the geologic framework for the unique and diverse ecology of northeastern Iowa. Differential weathering and erosion of these variable rock types resulted in irregular surface slopes in a multi-stepped, high-relief landscape. Additionally, solution of carbonate bedrock produced karst topography, cavern systems, ice caves, cold-air drainage, and perennial groundwater springs. The so-called "Driftless Area" in Iowa was glaciated repeatedly in Pre-Illinoian time, and should not be called "Driftless." The name Paleozoic Plateau for this physiographic region more accurately describes some of its special aspects and also incorporates …

Some Views On The Archaeology Of The Driftless Area In Iowa, R. Clark Mallam Jan 1984

Some Views On The Archaeology Of The Driftless Area In Iowa, R. Clark Mallam

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The archaeology of the Driftless Area in Iowa encompasses a time frame extending from approximately 10,000 B.C. to Euroamerican contact. Researchers have defined a series of prehistoric adaptations for this period which can be conveniently grouped under two major modes of production: hunting/gathering and hunting/gathering-horticultural. By analyzing the evolution of these modes it may be possible to define prehistoric belief systems and the manner in which they functioned as significant components in the adaptation process. This combined scientific-humanistic approach may contribute toward a broader understanding of the prehistory of this region.

Natural Heritage Protection In The "Driftess Area", Dean M. Roosa Jan 1984

Natural Heritage Protection In The "Driftess Area", Dean M. Roosa

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The heavily dissected terrain of northeastern Iowa and adjacent parts of Minnesota, Illinois, and Wisconsin, historically known as the "Driftless Area" has an array of unusual or unique biotic, cultural, and geological amenities. As these features become better known, a greater awareness is emerging, as is a heightened concern for saving the outstanding examples of each community, culture, historical site, and geological feature. Each of the states has a natural area program and has developed a list of natural communities including those of the Driftless Area. Each state's program relative to the Driftless Area is given, with emphasis on Iowa, …

The Conversion Of A Recreational Camp Into A Residential Environment And Educational Learning Center, Ellen Wells Ernst Jan 1984

The Conversion Of A Recreational Camp Into A Residential Environment And Educational Learning Center, Ellen Wells Ernst

Graduate Research Papers

Educational systems in our country have continually faced the challenge of providing educational opportunities for all our children. As well as maintaining a national goal of high educational standards, we have also encouraged an individualistic approach to meeting needs of students. Our educational systems must deal with an extremely wide range of personalities, beliefs, backgrounds, expectations, incomes and abilities. Teachers have a wealth of information available to help them determine students' individual needs and ways of meeting these needs. Students' needs can vary from cognitive-knowledge and moral-motivational needs to personal-emotional and physical needs. Curricula and programs generally attempt to insure …

Reading In The Content Areas: A Review Of In-Service Approaches And A Personal Experience, Marnell Keas Lyle Jan 1984

Reading In The Content Areas: A Review Of In-Service Approaches And A Personal Experience, Marnell Keas Lyle

Graduate Research Papers

Prior to the 193O's, the function of secondary school reading instruction was to expand upon the basic reading knowledge a student had acquired by concentrating on the literary works. However, by 1937, thinking began to change regarding secondary school participation in the reading skills process and, in particular, the content area teacher's participation in the teaching of reading.

Exercises For Promoting Creativity For Photographers, Charles Lee Tucker Jan 1984

Exercises For Promoting Creativity For Photographers, Charles Lee Tucker

Graduate Research Papers

Every year billions of dollars are spent on photographs for the purpose of advertising, portraits, illustrations in magazines and on billboards. The editors are forever searching for the "creative" photo, the one that has a very unique quality about it. It is a very elusive quality, one that is difficult to define, and one that is still more difficult to teach to aspiring photographers.

Decreasing Debilitating Test Anxiety In Elementary Remedial Readers, H. Marlene Watson Jan 1984

Decreasing Debilitating Test Anxiety In Elementary Remedial Readers, H. Marlene Watson

Graduate Research Papers

Diagnosis is an integral part of the remedial reading program. It gives direction, facilitates decisions, and provides a basis for choosing instructional techniques and materials. It is a complicated process of choosing what information is appropriate, what decisions are to be made, and what methods can best implement these decisions. In short, diagnosis is a comprehensive process necessary to reading instruction. In fact, as its best, it is a type of instruction known as diagnostic teaching. One factor in this process of diagnosis is assessment (Peters,1977).

An Analysis Of Six Months Of Juvenile Book Reviewing By Four Major Reviewing Sources, Marilyn Weber Jan 1984

An Analysis Of Six Months Of Juvenile Book Reviewing By Four Major Reviewing Sources, Marilyn Weber

Graduate Research Papers

This study was based on Zena Sutherland's 1965 research of review coverage of juvenile books by School Library Journal, Booklist, Bulletin of the Center for Children's Books, and Horn Book. Sutherland's research analyzed twelve months of reviewing by the selected sources for the purpose of determining the number of titles reviewed by all four of the reviewing sources, by three of the four reviewing sources, by two of the four reviewing sources, and by only one of the four reviewing sources. The representation of nonfiction and fiction titles was also analyzed by Sutherland. This research study adopted the same objectives …

A Comparison Of Learning Disabled And Normal Children On A Selective Attention Task While Using A Verbal Rehearsal Strategy, Stephen A. Mullenberg

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The present study involved using an information processing approach for the purpose of understanding and remediating attention problems in the learning disabled students. Specifically, the intent . of the present study was to assess the process of selective attention as measured through Hagen's (1967) central-incidental paradigm.

The present study compared performance of learning disabled and normal students while using either a verbal rehearsal strategy (Dawson, Hallahan, Reeve, & Ball, 1980) or no rehearsal strategy on Hagen's (1967) task of selective attention.

Fifty Iowa public school students, 24 LD and 26 normals, from fifth through ninth grade, participated in the study. …

The Relationship Of Lean Body Mass To Resting Metabolic Rate, Maryann Butler Jan 1984

The Relationship Of Lean Body Mass To Resting Metabolic Rate, Maryann Butler

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Previous investigators have established predictors affecting basal metabolic rate. These include body size, age and sex, surface area, temperature and environment, and exercise. Conflicting data have been reported concerning the expression of basal metabolism in units of square meters of surface area. It was the purpose of this study to observe the relationship of lean body mass (LBM) to resting metabolic rate (RMR) in college-age males of high lean body mass and low lean body mass. A second purpose was to determine the validity of a relatively new method of measuring resting metabolic rate using a whole body calorimeter (WBC). …

A Comparison Of Oxygen Consumption In Light And Heavy Resistance Weight Training Methods In Males, Kean Gerard Richard Jan 1984

A Comparison Of Oxygen Consumption In Light And Heavy Resistance Weight Training Methods In Males, Kean Gerard Richard

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Heavy resistance and low resistance weight training methods are commonly used in off season conditioning programs for various sports. Research has indicated that heavy resistance training elicits muscular strength development whereas low resistance training elicits the development of muscular endurance. However, there is very little or no research which has investigated a comparison of oxygen consumption between heavy resistance and low resistance training while keeping work constant.

The purpose of this investigation was to compare the oxygen cost of performing heavy and low resistance weight training methods. Also, a second purpose of the study was to determine the contribution of …

Reading Rocks: Early History Of Paleontology, Mary Simonis-Parish, Doris A. Simonis Jan 1983

Reading Rocks: Early History Of Paleontology, Mary Simonis-Parish, Doris A. Simonis

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The word paleontology is taken from the Greek words 'palaios' meaning old, 'ontos' a being, and 'logos' to study (Hamlyn, 1968). It is usually loosely translated to mean 'the study of past life', or 'the study of fossils'. Though the word itself has been used only in recent times, an interest in fossils (as interesting objects literally "dug out of the earth") is probably as old as humankind. The subject of this paper is the development of ideas that deal with the significance and origin of fossils. The explanations range from ancient times up to the nineteenth century when fossils …

Collecting Reptiles And Amphibians For Classroom Use, Donald J. Perschau Jan 1983

Collecting Reptiles And Amphibians For Classroom Use, Donald J. Perschau

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The advantages of living organisms in the classroom are well known to biology and elementary teachers. Live animals and plants spark interest, provide color and movement, can be used as teaching materials, and can generally improve the classroom environment. Organisms commonly found in classrooms include plants from the genera Coleus, Dracena, Philodendron, and many others, and animals which are often small mammals or perhaps tropical fish. Seldom does one find more primitive vascular or non-vascular plants, invertebrate animals, reptiles or amphibians. It has been my experience that these organisms have much to add to the classroom and …

Human Evolution, Robert D. Seager Jan 1983

Human Evolution, Robert D. Seager

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

A common characteristic of humans is a desire to know their roots. This is evident not only in the tracing of family ancestries, but in the excitement about and attention given to the study of the roots of our entire species - the study of human evolution. We have, over the past few million years, evolved from an ape-like ancestor to modern Homo sapiens. Like evolution in general, the fact of human evolution is as firmly established as anything in science. There are, however, differences among scientists concerning details of this process. In this paper I will give an historical …

Computer Assisted Instruction In The Elementary School, John William Stevens Jan 1983

Computer Assisted Instruction In The Elementary School, John William Stevens

Graduate Research Papers

Computers as we know them today had their infancy in the late 1940's. Since that time computer technology and its concomitant applications in everyday life have expanded at nearly geometric proportions. Today the technology is advanced to about the same state that black and white television had reached in the late 1950's. Concurrent to the early development of the computer were two major trends in education: an awareness among educators for the need of individualized instruction and renewed interest in programmed learning. Thus a natural confluence of a budding technology and educational objectives occurred, resulting in computer assisted instruction. Introduction …

The Relationship Between Field Dependence/Field Independence And Health Behaviors Of High School Students, John William Preston Jan 1983

The Relationship Between Field Dependence/Field Independence And Health Behaviors Of High School Students, John William Preston

Graduate Research Papers

The United States is in the midst of a second public health revolution (Califano, 1979). The success of the first revolution during the late nineteenth century and the first half of the twentieth century lead to the control or eradication of major acute diseases such as; influenza, pneumonia, diphtheria, tuberculosis and gastrointestinal infections. While the death rates from these major diseases fell sharply, from 580 for every 100,000 people in 1900 to less than 30 people per 100,000 in 1970, the proportion of mortality from major chronic and degenerative diseases, such as cancer, stroke and heart disease, increased more than …
