Did The Devil Make Darwin Do It? Historical Perspectives On The Creation-Evolution Controversy, David B. Wilson
Did The Devil Make Darwin Do It? Historical Perspectives On The Creation-Evolution Controversy, David B. Wilson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The 19th century witnessed a conceptual revolution of the 1st magnitude, not only in biology but also in geology, theology, philosophy, Biblical studies, and physics. This paper sketches these intellectual developments in Britain as they shaped and were shaped by the ideas of Charles Darwin. From this perspective, the paper comments on aspects of the current creation-evolution controversy, including the creationist suggestion that scientists accepted the theory of evolution because Satan persuaded them to do so.

Effects Of An Ammonia-Rich Municipal Sewage Effluent On Iowa River Fauna Near Marshalltown, Iowa, Keith Govro, Marianne V. Moore, Craig L. Olson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The effect of the Marshalltown municipal sewage effluent on Iowa River water quality and fauna was evaluated from July 1976 through August 1977. The effluent contains high total ammonia and un-ionized ammonia concentrations due to ammonia-rich discharges from meat packinghouses. Dissolved oxygen, pH, temperature, total ammonia nitrogen, and un-ionized ammonia data were collected at.12 sampling stations extending 18 km downstream from the sewage effluent discharge. Wild fish collections were made by using electrofishing, seines, and hoopnets. Thirty-eight fish species were collected during the study. Channel catfish. (Ictalurus punctatus) and smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieus) were the most common gamefish. No consistent …

Limax Amebae In Two Swimming Pools At Iowa State University, Ames, Iowa, Lawrence G. Mitchell, Samuel C. Townsend, Kenneth C. Choquette
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Four types of amebae (Acanthamoeba, Hartmanella, Naegleria-like amebae, and a vannellid, probably Platyamoeba) were identified from 2 indoor swimming pools on the Iowa State University campus during January-April 1981. Large numbers of these amebae, and other protozoans and metazoans were found in a yellow-brown (mainly bacterial) floc growing on the pool bottom, in filtering systems, and in recirculation pipes. None of the amebae were found to be pathogenic in laboratory mice. Corrective pool maintenance procedures and laboratory studies of the floc and amebae are described.
An Annotated Bibliography Of Materials For A Secondary Level Geometry Course, Andrea Seversen
An Annotated Bibliography Of Materials For A Secondary Level Geometry Course, Andrea Seversen
Graduate Research Papers
The contention is made that high school students experience frustrations in their pursuit of learning Euclidean geometry. Three causes of frustration are assumed: inadequate comprehension of new concepts; lack of a sense of need or usefulness of concepts presented; a lack of initial or sustaining interest in the subject. A further presumption is made that appropriate utilization of multimedia in the study of geometry will alleviate some of these frustrations.
In light of these assumptions and with substantial support for them in literature reviewed, an annotated bibliography of multimedia intended for incorporation into the study of Euclidean geometry and directed …

Stereotypes Of The Native American In Fiction Books In Elementary School Libraries, Karma Anderson
Graduate Research Papers
This study proposed to investigate the kinds of Native American materials which were found in elementary school library media centers in Iowa Education Agency Seven (AEA 7). A questionnaire was prepared with seventeen recommended titles and fifteen presently criticized titles on which media specialists in AEA 7 were to indicate availability in their media centers. The hypothesis to be tested was: Given a list of books containing both reconnnended and presently criticized titles, 75 percent of school library specialists in AEA 7 will indicate that there are more recommended titles than presently criticized titles on Native Americans in their fiction …

The Tiger Salamander, Michael J. Lannoo
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Tiger salamanders are harmless members of the Class Amphibia which easily lend themselves to observation and experimentation. As the name amphibian implies, these salamanders have two life forms, an aquatic larval stage and a terrestrial adult stage. Both forms are common and widespread throughout Iowa, yet adults, being terrestrial and less seasonal, are encountered more frequently than the larvae.

Seasonal Variation Of Tremetol Concentrations Found In White Snakeroot, Eupatorium Rugosum Houtt (Compositae), Gerald W. Kaufmann
Seasonal Variation Of Tremetol Concentrations Found In White Snakeroot, Eupatorium Rugosum Houtt (Compositae), Gerald W. Kaufmann
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
White snakeroot is a perennial composite whose foliage is poisonous to livestock. The poison is an unidentified substance contained in a mixture called tremetol. Most cases of poisoning occurred in late summer, and it was presumed livestock were forced to eat the plants because of a dearth of forage. Field observations indicate cattle will voluntarily eat white snakeroot and perhaps the plant varies seasonally in toxicity. Preliminary bioassy using minnows (Notropis spp.) exposed to extracts of plants gathered monthly in 1977 indicated the plants were most toxic in July and August. Tremetol was extracted from plants gathered monthly in 1978. …

Blind Clients Perceptions Of Sighted Counselor's Empathy In The Counseling Relationships, Mae Porter
Blind Clients Perceptions Of Sighted Counselor's Empathy In The Counseling Relationships, Mae Porter
Graduate Research Papers
The research paper was designed to study the ability of sighted counselors to counsel blind clients with empathy. While blindness should not pose a difficulty, many sighted counselors do have difficulties working with blind clients. Based on the research done for the study, this problem occurs mainly because of their difficulties in distinguishing empathy from sympathy. A major problem is the counselor's understanding of his/her own feelings about the blind client. Many counselors cannot get beyond the label "blind" and view the total person, not simply the handicap.

Through the illustrations, children would be exposed to and become acquainted with the art of origami. This research project was accomplished through writing a story of literary worth, creating illustrations which assisted in relating the story, and designing a book format …
Anti-Evolutionism And The Effects Of The Scopes Trial, John R. Cole
Anti-Evolutionism And The Effects Of The Scopes Trial, John R. Cole
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
In 1925 John T. Scopes was convicted of the crime of teaching evolution in violation of a new Tennessee law. The circus-like trial has been regarded by many observers as a rite de passage for twentieth century attitudes-although Scopes was convicted, his trial held anti-evolutionism up to wide public ridicule, and his $100 fine was in fact overturned on a technicality upon appeal.
A Comparison Of Piagetian And Psychometric Measures Of Intelligence, Kathryn Ann Berntson
A Comparison Of Piagetian And Psychometric Measures Of Intelligence, Kathryn Ann Berntson
Graduate Research Papers
The ideas of Jean Piaget have sooner or later been applied to practically every aspect of education. These ideas are based on Piaget's theory that every individual progresses through four cognitive developmental stages: the sensorimotor stage, the preoperational stage, the concrete operational stage, and the formal operational stage. According to Piaget, during these stages an individual progresses from reflex reactions to the environment to the point, if and when he reaches the level of formal operations, he can think abstractly and test hypotheses.

A Calcium-Phosphate-Phospholipid Complex Extracted From Rats Exhibiting Calciphylactic Nephrocalcinosis, Elaine Bardes Haynes
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Calciphylactic nephrocalcinosis was induced in female Sprague Dawley rats by treatment with dihydrotachysterol (0.5 mg/100g body weight) and thallous acetate (2 mg/100 g body weight). A calcium-phosphatephospholipid complex was isolated from rat kidneys exhibiting calciphylactic nephrocalcinosis and from untreated controls. There was a statistically significant greater quantity of complex extractable after calciphylaxis was induced. An average of 8.0% of the total phospholipid extracted from the tissue was present in complexed form in treated animals and 3.7 % in control animals. The phospholipid component of the complex was identified as phosphatidyl serine. The ratio of calcium to phosphate was less than …

Interpretation Of English Intonation And Stress Patterns Reproduced By Vietnamese Speakers, Jolene Gear
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The present study examines native English speakers' perception of English sentences reproduced by Vietnamese speakers. The work is based on the question of whether Vietnamese speakers who use tone to make lexical distinctions in their own language can reproduce syntactical and lexical distinctions in English and if native English speakers can judge these distinction so Previous experiments done on intonation, stress and tone are discussed, followed by an examination of similarities and differences between Vietnamese and English prosody. The present experiment consisted of these steps: Pilot studies were conducted to determine which sentences of contrastive intonation and stress were to …

The Effect Of Adhesive Bond Strength Of Selected Species Of Laminated Wood, Daniel L. Henderson
The Effect Of Adhesive Bond Strength Of Selected Species Of Laminated Wood, Daniel L. Henderson
Graduate Research Papers
Wood laminating has been used by man for centuries and is a very important part of industrial enterprises today. In most woodworking textbooks reviewed however, those sections devoted to wood laminating are typically miniscule. Topics are hastily covered and only general information is provided. This study has been conducted in order to provide more adequate explanation of the laminating process in addition to those presently available and to explore the interrelationship of laminated components with the ultimate function of the product. A glance at any furniture manufacturing or construction industry periodical, however, will show the importance of wood laminating in …

A Site Evaluation For A Wind Generator At The University Of Northern Iowa, William A. Rosburg Ii
A Site Evaluation For A Wind Generator At The University Of Northern Iowa, William A. Rosburg Ii
Graduate Research Papers
There is a need to develop alternative sources of energy other than our finite fossil fuel resources (Clews, 1975; Leckie, Masters, Whitehouse and Young, 1975). One possible area of great potential is the clean renewable energy in the wind. The World Meteorological Organization has estimated that there is a potential for producing 20 million megawatts of electricity from wind power (Clews, 1975). Although there are problems with cost, reliability, and its inherently intermittent nature, both government and industry are working to develop a wind technology that will help meet today's electrical energy needs.
An increased awareness by the general public …

The word "love" is perhaps the most widely used and abused term in the English language. We love our parents. We love our brothers and sisters. We love our pet and fruit, vegetables and meat, our home, and our car or truck. We love our country and flag. We love, both animate and inanimate objects. Human beings, today and throughout history, have had the need to love and to be loved. The search of finding or simply recognizing this love, first of all, and then giving and receiving love, is often a frightening experience. There also seems to be a …
Some Ethical Considerations Concerning The Use Of Live Animals In Biology Experiments, David F. Treagust
Some Ethical Considerations Concerning The Use Of Live Animals In Biology Experiments, David F. Treagust
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
As biology teachers we are continually faced with decisions regarding the use of experiments in order to identify, investigate, clarify or illustrate a particular concept or concepts. If an experiment is to be performed we frequently have to decide whether to use live animals, preserved animal specimens, preserved animal organs, fresh animal organs (from, say, the butcher), tissue cultures, audio-visual simulations or even class members as the subjects. Many students, and indeed many teachers, have been reticent about their acceptance of experimenting with live, or freshly killed animals; frequently the issue is settled by reference to such work being in …
