The Effects Of Prenatal Versus Postnatal Maternal Environment On Saline Intake By Crossbred Rats, Mary Elizabeth Deyo Jan 1985

The Effects Of Prenatal Versus Postnatal Maternal Environment On Saline Intake By Crossbred Rats, Mary Elizabeth Deyo

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Previous research has demonstrated strain differences in sodium intake as well as strain-dependent effects of early experience on the sodium intake of rats. The present study investigated the roles of prenatal and postnatal maternal environment in determining the sodium intake patterns of hybrid offspring resulting from the reciprocal crossing of two inbred rat strains known to differ in sodium consumption: TS3 (high intake) and I (low intake). Offspring of identical genetic makeup were first subjected to differing prenatal maternal environments (TS3 or I). At birth the crossbred pups were either cross-fostered to a host dam of the opposite strain or …

The Development And Initial Validation Of A Test Of Students’ Use Of Morphemic Analysis In Deriving Word Meaning, Maelou Kelly Baxter Jan 1985

The Development And Initial Validation Of A Test Of Students’ Use Of Morphemic Analysis In Deriving Word Meaning, Maelou Kelly Baxter

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to develop and initially validate a test of students' use of morphemic analysis in deriving word meaning. Eight steps in test construction were followed: (a) definition of test objectives, (b) definition of target population, (c) review of related measures, (d) development of an item pool, (e) preparation of a prototype, (f) evaluation of the prototype, (g) revision of the measure, and (h) collection of data on test validity and reliability. The field testing was conducted with 15 fifth-grade and 15 sixth-grade readers who lived in a midwestern town with a population of about 35,000. …

A Study Of Controlling Variables Using A Microcomputer Program Compared To The Piagetian Bending Rods Task, Rita Arlene Hrecz Jan 1985

A Study Of Controlling Variables Using A Microcomputer Program Compared To The Piagetian Bending Rods Task, Rita Arlene Hrecz

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study compared two formats of controlling variables. Subjects' performance of controlling variables in the Piagetian Bending Rods Task was compared to their performance of controlling variables in the microcomputer interactive program called Measuring Gravitational Forces. The correlation result (0.78 on the Spearman rho and the Pearson Product Moment correlations) and results of the nonparametric Wilcoxon t test and the parametric correlated t indicated no statistically significant difference of subjects' performance of controlling variables in either task. No statistically significant gender difference of subjects' performance of either the Bending Rods Task or the Measuring Gravitational Forces computer program was found. …

Preschoolers' Gender Assignment To An Androgynous Storybook Character, Mara C. Loeb Jan 1985

Preschoolers' Gender Assignment To An Androgynous Storybook Character, Mara C. Loeb

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Tests designed to identify sexual preference, and administered to 8th grade through college-age subjects, have revealed a strong male bias in the responses by both sexes. Perceived similarity to a character (identification) increases attention to, and memory of, sex stereotyped information. Thus, a preference for the male gender would increase the effectiveness of information for males but not for females, since identification is not possible. This study examined preschoolers' identification with an androgynous storybook character. Eighty three- and four-year-old boys and girls from randomly chosen preschools were read a storybook prepared for this study. The storybook controlled for three gender …

A Philosophical Taxonomy Of The Major Correctional Perspectives: Toward A New Approach In Criminal Justice, Steven Jay Cuvelier Jan 1985

A Philosophical Taxonomy Of The Major Correctional Perspectives: Toward A New Approach In Criminal Justice, Steven Jay Cuvelier

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Since the repudiation of the rehabilitation ideal in the mid 1970s a considerable body of literature has developed in which the social purpose and goal of American corrections are debated. While much attention has been given to the policy issues surrounding the various correctional approaches, the author notes that little attention has been paid to the philosophical foundations upon which these perspectives are based. Chapter 1 traces the development of correctional ideology from its beginning to the present crises. An overview of the current problems faced by corrections is given, focusing upon the lack of conceptual clarity in the criminal …

Cognitive Correlates And Predictors Of Verbal Aggression And Anger In The College Population, Douglas Allen Davidson Jan 1985

Cognitive Correlates And Predictors Of Verbal Aggression And Anger In The College Population, Douglas Allen Davidson

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The present investigation involved a multidimensional approach to the assessment of anger and aggression. Past research had neglected to use multiple assessment approaches to assess the degree of anger and aggression experience. The present study evaluated cognitive, behavioral, and physiological measures of anger and aggression. This study examined the subjects' thought processes, as well as their actual verbal behavior in role-play situations. The purpose of the present study was to find out what variables were the best predictors of verbal aggression and anger. Based on past research the following hypotheses were proposed: (a) subjects rated high on anger and aggression …

Response Latency In Fluent And Disfluent Preschoolers, Sue Ann Kenlee Hook Jan 1985

Response Latency In Fluent And Disfluent Preschoolers, Sue Ann Kenlee Hook

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the study was to investigate the possibility that disfluent preschoolers manifest a more impulsive cognitive tempo as compared to a language-matched control group of subjects. Nine disfluent and nine control subjects responded to two tasks designed to measure response latency from which a measure of impulsiveness could be determined. One was a classic match-to-sample figures task and the other involved verbal descriptions of ·irregularities represented in a set of pictures. Response latencies (in ms) and the number of errors made were tallied for the first task and response latencies were measured in 1/100 second for the second …

The Effects Of Artistic Three Dimensionality On Preschoolers’ Perception Of Line Drawings, Barbara Lynn Froyen Jan 1985

The Effects Of Artistic Three Dimensionality On Preschoolers’ Perception Of Line Drawings, Barbara Lynn Froyen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the study was to compare different forms of stimuli for eliciting children's knowledge of their language. The study compared black-and-white drawings employing cues to depth, movement, and form. Pictures from various commercially available receptive and expressive language tests were selected. Three-dimensional representations of the same linguistic concepts were developed by the investigator. Selected test stimuli and their three-dimensional counterparts were administered to 30 preschool-age children. Responses to both stimuli were judged as correct or incorrect by the scoring conventions of the test from which the items were selected. Study results indicated that within each dimension tested, pictures …

Testing A Direct Mail Offer In Magazine Subscription Promotion, Mary L. Peet Jan 1985

Testing A Direct Mail Offer In Magazine Subscription Promotion, Mary L. Peet

Graduate Research Papers

Direct marketing is an $82 million per year business. Its history dates back over a century with roots in direct mail. Direct marketing today involves not only mail, but a variety of media, including newspapers and magazines, radio, television and telephone. The cornerstone of direct marketing is its measurability and accountability, as well as a reliance on lists and a database (Baier, 1983). In other words, direct marketing allows marketers to improve their skills by measuring what they do against previous tests. The availability of lists and data about lists provides populations from which samples can be drawn to conduct …

An Evaluation Of Sin For Clients Who May Have A Sin Problem, Alice Jean Mosch Jan 1984

An Evaluation Of Sin For Clients Who May Have A Sin Problem, Alice Jean Mosch

Graduate Research Papers

The major purpose of the paper is to look at 11 sin 11 and its relationship to counseling. Could some counselees benefit more if their behavior was seen as sinful rather than caused by some psychological illness? According to Daubner (1982), this topic is important because a counselor's style and methodology is influenced by his views on the nature of man, whether he is aware of those views. Every theory of psychology is based on certain presuppositions (Adams, 1972). The good counselor then, should know how his assumptions and values affect his counseling.

Implications Of Existential-Humanistic Principles For Counseling Adolescents In Schools, Peter John Larson Jan 1984

Implications Of Existential-Humanistic Principles For Counseling Adolescents In Schools, Peter John Larson

Graduate Research Papers

This study focuses upon the emergence of existential humanistic psychology, particularly as developed through the work of Carl Rogers. The study attempts to display how existential humanistic psychology, as expressed through the work of Rogers, may offer valuable insights to counselors working with adolescents in school settings. By assuming that adolescents are at the forefront of society in terms of planning lives in a fast-changing and often despairing climate, the conclusion is offered that the principles of existential-humanistic psychology might be particularly relevant to counselors who are working with the adolescent in schools.

Zoogeography Of Iowa's Paleozoic Plateau, Robert W. Howe Jan 1984

Zoogeography Of Iowa's Paleozoic Plateau, Robert W. Howe

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The Paleozoic Plateau and adjacent rocky outcrop areas of northeastern Iowa harbor many of the state’s most unique animal species. Nearly 40% of the state's endangered or threatened vertebrates and all of Iowa's animals on the national list are known from this region. Quantitative comparisons with other parts of the state confirm the existence of a rich vertebrate fauna in the Paelozoic Plateau region. Its peripheral location within Iowa, extensive forest cover, and relatively undisturbed river systems account largely for the occurrence of species found rarely or not at all elsewhere in the state. Less mobile organisms such as land …

Annual Report Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, 1983-84, James G. Macmillan

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The year 1984 marks the 109th anniversary of the founding of the Academy in 1875. Since the review of the first 100 years published in the centennial issue of the Proceedings in March 1975, the "Annual Report" has been a running history of the organization. The previous reports were written by Robert W. Hanson, the Executive Director from 1967 to 1983. In keeping with this tradition, this author will review this year's activities of the Academy. This year's report encompasses the year beginning July 1, 1983 and ending June 30, 1984, and is based on Board minutes, committee reports and …

An Annotated Bibliography Of Biographies For Career Education - Grades 4-6, Susan P. Polashek

Graduate Research Papers

An annotated bibliography of biographies was compiled for the career education program in grades 4-6. An attempt was made to locate four biographies for each of the fifteen job clusters designated by the U.S. Office of Education that would be representative of the spectrum of the world of work. A search was made of the Cedar Falls Public Library, Wauzeka Public Schools IMC, and interlibrary loan for biographies. Representative biographies were found for the job clusters of Agribusiness and Natural Resources, Environment, Communication and Media, Fine Arts and Humanities, Health, Public Services, and Recreation and Hospitality. A limited number of …

A Critical Evaluation Of Rogerian Counseling In Terms Of Its Usefulness In Christian Counseling, James O. Sims Jan 1984

A Critical Evaluation Of Rogerian Counseling In Terms Of Its Usefulness In Christian Counseling, James O. Sims

Graduate Research Papers

Pastoral counseling, in its present condition, is dominated ''almost exclusively by therapeutic psychology, principally by Rogerian counseling" (Aden, 1984, p. 38). Depending on one's perspective, such a charge is either a sign of hope or an omen of doom. Gaylord B. Noyce, professor of pastoral theology at the Yale University divinity school sees it as the latter. He charges that an "exaggerated deference" to the client-centered theory and methodology of Carl Rogers is "undermining the ministry in hundreds of congregations today." "We have taken the immensely helpful, nondirective Rogerian pattern and made it gospel, not only for wide areas of …

Counseling American Indian Students, Kathleen Curphy Jan 1984

Counseling American Indian Students, Kathleen Curphy

Graduate Research Papers

American Indians today are in a limbo created by their changing culture. While the traditional ways are still being taught in the home, white middle class values are being taught in school. Another factor contributing to this situation is the distorted image of the Indian which is sometimes projected by white writers and the mass media. The image of the American Indian today is that of a stoic, long-suffering, proud, warlike, lazy, drunken individual on the government dole. Indians have maintained their proud heritage, but they deal daily with their distorted image.

The Aquatic Vascular Flora Of Clear Lake, Cerro Gordo County, Iowa, Paul E. Niemeier, Wayne A. Hubert

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

A survey in July and August 1981 showed aquatic vascular plants in Clear Lake, Iowa, were concentrated in nine major vegetation beds covering a total of 22.6 hectares. Of 24 plant species identified, five were reported for the first time from this lake. The dominant taxa were softstem bulrush, Scirpus validus, and hybrid cattail, Typha glauca. Maps showing plant distributions and depth contours for the nine vegetation beds are presented. The 1981 community was characterized by emergent plants tolerant of high turbidity.

The Feeding Behavior Of The Giant Waterbug, Stephen W. Ziser Jan 1984

The Feeding Behavior Of The Giant Waterbug, Stephen W. Ziser

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Ethology, the study of animal behavior; is a branch of biology too often overlooked in beginning biology courses. This is unfortunate since studying the behavior of living animals not only captures the interest and imagination of students more easily than other kinds of laboratory exercises but can also help to develop the skills of observation and description so fundamental to the art of science.

Iowa's Driftless Area: Symposium, Daryl D. Smith Jan 1984

Iowa's Driftless Area: Symposium, Daryl D. Smith

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

The 1983 Annual Meeting of the Iowa Academy of Science on Luther Campus in Decorah provided an excellent opportunity for considering the "Iowa Driftless Area," a region of scenic beauty and unusual scientific diversity. This rugged landscape dominated by bedrock has undergone weathering and erosion longer than any other region of the state. The term "Driftless Area" originated from an early geologic interpretation that a portion of northeastern Iowa had been untouched by Pleistocene glaciers.
