Interactive Video A New Tool For Teaching, Belisario Laguado Bueno

Graduate Research Papers

Finding new and functional methods for instruction has been one of the most important factors in education. Human beings have learned new technologies by using different techniques for teaching. Starting with direct experiences with nature, body- language, hieroglyphics, graphic symbols, codes and creatin1 different ways for displaying those characters, scientists have used them in the diffusion of science.

Potential For Using Environmental Education And Practices Of K-5 Teachers In Marshalltown, Iowa, Dennis John Eige Jan 1987

Potential For Using Environmental Education And Practices Of K-5 Teachers In Marshalltown, Iowa, Dennis John Eige

Graduate Research Papers

In today's world it's easy to feel like a god. We live in an age of world-wide information gathering and speed-of-light computer processing that gives us the sense of omniscience. Our eye-in-the-sky satellite surveillance systems give us the feeling of omnipresence. The harnessing and development of nuclear power contributes to an all-powerful state of mind which seduces us into believing we are also wise enough to make the best decisions possible concerning our world. However, such does not appear to be the case, if environmental quality, use of world resources, and health of living populations are used as indicators.

Children who are gifted experience the same problems as other children of lesser ability; but they also have unique problems that are a direct result of their giftedness. In a synthesis of her research of gifted children, Galbraith (1983> identified some of these problems, including among others, boredom in school , not being understood and accepted by peers , perfectionism

Supportive Literature-Based Oral Language Experiences For Young Children In A Chapter I Program, Beverly L. Mccartney Jan 1987

Supportive Literature-Based Oral Language Experiences For Young Children In A Chapter I Program, Beverly L. Mccartney

Graduate Research Papers

Reading begins in the home. Parents who involve children in meaningful oral and written language experiences build a foundation for literacy. 11Early development of reading comes from experience talking and learning about the world and talking and learning about written language 11 (Anderson, Hiebert, Scott, Wilkinson, 1985, p. 21- 22). Parents model a commitment to education and learning by making reading and language an important part of their life and their children 1 s lives.

Facilitating Science Understanding Through Children's Literature, Michelle A. Sand

Graduate Research Papers

Americans have been enamored with the achievements of industry until recently considered successful. In fulfilling the goal that all citizens should be literate, assembly line techniques associated with industry have been extrapolated to educational programs for children. The development of the total product has been broken into small segments. Reading instruction, too, frequently has been oversimplified and associated with a scope and sequence of skills for children to master. Students have been subjected to pretest, teach, posttest with mastery of language fragments measured by a percentage level assuming that learning has taken place.

The Study Of Book Design To Extend The Understanding Of A Story, Natalie S. Passow Jan 1987

The Study Of Book Design To Extend The Understanding Of A Story, Natalie S. Passow

Graduate Research Papers

What is book design? Why do some books have colored or illustrated endpapers, illuminated letters and decorative borders? Is it necessary for children to know what book design is and how it is used in order to comprehend fully the stories they read? Is an awareness of book design something that parents should have when choosing a book for their child? If book design is not an important aspect in determining which books children and adults choose to read, and also to their understanding of the story, why do publishers spend so much time and money on this aspect? Why …

Using The Fused Approach Of Computer-Based Instruction And Distance Learning As A Pre-Inservice Technique In The Job-Related Education Of Teachers, Tina Marie Anne Sherrill-Range Jan 1987

Using The Fused Approach Of Computer-Based Instruction And Distance Learning As A Pre-Inservice Technique In The Job-Related Education Of Teachers, Tina Marie Anne Sherrill-Range

Graduate Research Papers

Recent information, summarized by Seal and Casler (1984), appears to stress certain educational issues which include the rapid growth of a technology-based society. They maintained an argument for properly administered technology by skilled professionals. Training in the area of technology-based instruction for teachers can help to ensure its proper application in instructional situations. Because of the enhancement of learning which can take place through technology-based instruction, there is a long-term need to address teacher preservice to the profession on the topic. Likewise, inservice teacher education programs need to be updated if technology implementation in schools is to be successful.

Power Plays: Feminist Theory Of Power In A Select Group Of Lillian Hellman's Plays, Cindy J. Pope

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

This study focuses on the way in which female characters within a selected group of Lillian Hellman's works use power. The overall purpose of this study is to scrutinize the modern theory of feminist power based on Hanna Pitkin, Dorothy Emmet, Berenice Carroll, and Marilyn French. All four base the modern theory of feminist power on the assertion that men and women have different experiences of power. This study is a literary review of three plays by Hellman.

The plays that are examined for this study include: The Children's Hour (1939), The Little Foxes (1939), and Toys In The Attic …

The Effect Of Massage On Blood Lactate Levels Following A Maximal Treadmill Run, Ann Morien-Mcmurray

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of massage on blood lactate levels in trained male runners following a maximal treadmill run. Twenty-two male distance runners performed a maximal aerobic run on a motor-driven treadmill, at 9 mph and a 2 1/2% grade increase every minute until exhaustion. Fifteen of the subjects were randomly selected for either an active bicycle recovery (pedaling at 40% VO2max), or to receive a massage. A third group served as a control and lay supine during recovery. The three recoveries lasted 20 min. Venous blood was collected during the recovery at 3, …

Metacognition As A Theoretical Construct: Its Nature, Origins, And Application In The Secondary Reading Program, Karen Collinge Carroll Jan 1987

Metacognition As A Theoretical Construct: Its Nature, Origins, And Application In The Secondary Reading Program, Karen Collinge Carroll

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Metacognition is a theoretical construct used to describe a type of cognitive ability through which an individual assesses the range and quality of his/her own knowledge and is able to gain insight and control over particular aspects of his/her own cognitive and affective processes. Metacognition appears to be an important factor in development of higher level thinking skills, in acquisition of knowledge, and in reading comprehension. Because of its role in reading and learning, metacognition may prove to be an ideal construct on which to base secondary reading instruction, an area of secondary curriculum which is in particular need of …

The Synthesis Of (3s, 8as) 3-(2-Phenyl-2-Propyl-)-1-Oxo-Octahydro-2h-Pyrido[1, 2a] Pyrazine As A Model Compound To Test Proposed Structure-Activity Relationships And Metabolism Of The Natural Mycotoxin And Muscle Relaxant: Verruculotoxin, Karen Earlene Couch

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The compound verruculotoxin, a natural mycotoxin, was isolated in 1974 and found to be biologically active, having anesthetic properties. Two theories have been proposed to explain the biological activity of verruculotoxin. The first theory states that verruculotoxin is not the biologically active compound, but, rather, as a result of metabolism in the body, a biologically active metabolite is produced. The second theory states that the biological activity of verruculotoxin is dependent upon the molecules ability to mimick various co-formations with respect to the spatial arrangement of the aromatic ring and nitrogen atom. These theories are used to explain the activity …

Behavioral Responses Of Drosophila Robusta And Drosophila Tripunctata In Response To A Temperature And Humidity Gradient, Ellen E. Hostert Jan 1987

Behavioral Responses Of Drosophila Robusta And Drosophila Tripunctata In Response To A Temperature And Humidity Gradient, Ellen E. Hostert

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Temperature may be a major factor limiting distribution and abundance of species in the wild. It may be the main influence determining the seasonal abundances of two native species, Drosophila robusta and D. tripunctata, both of which have been collected from a lowland forest . Survival studies indicate that D. tripunctata does not survive as well at high temperatures (27 and 30°c) as does D. robusta (Seager, unpublished data). This suggests that the responses of these two species when placed in a temperature and humidity gradient may be responsible for the difference i n seasonal abundances noted by Jennings et …

Science Notes - Book News: Dictionary Of Word Roots & Combining Forms, Carl W. Bollwinkel Jan 1986

Science Notes - Book News: Dictionary Of Word Roots & Combining Forms, Carl W. Bollwinkel

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

"What is this?" In answer to this frequently asked question, a name is usually given. Naming often terminates inquiry, but it need not if the meaning of the name is known. The meaning usually provides a bridge to inquiry into the life style of plants and animals and the function and characteristics of inanimate science objects. The Dictionary of Word Roots & Combining Forms is a concise tool for finding the interesting bits of meaning which may be derived from the names of the objects brought into the classroom.

A Review Of Selected Neurochemical And Cognitive Hypotheses Of Depression, Kenneth Edward Klingman Jan 1986

A Review Of Selected Neurochemical And Cognitive Hypotheses Of Depression, Kenneth Edward Klingman

Graduate Research Papers

According to the American Psychiatric Association (1980), the characteristic traits of depression are quite well established. Symptoms include dysphoric mood, insomnia, psychomotor agitation or retardation, loss of interest or pleasure in usual activities, loss of energy and fatigue, feelings of worthlessness, diminished ability to think or concentrate, and thoughts of death or suicidal ideation/attempt. Depressed persons also have been characterized as self-deprecating and unrealistically pessimistic as well as suffering from distorted cognitive processes (Coyne & Gotlib, 1983). The only essential criterion for a diagnosis of major depression is that the syndrome be present for at least two weeks (Willner, 1985).

Picture Books And The Literary Connection: A Bibliography, Susan Hall Jan 1986

Picture Books And The Literary Connection: A Bibliography, Susan Hall

Graduate Research Papers

Both elementary and secondary aged school students are required to recognize and understand various common literary devices that are employed in the fictional literature they read. In order to facilitate this learning process, using appropriate trade picture storybooks combined with traditional textbook literature may better serve to enhance student comprehension of literary devices. An examination of the past five (1980-1985) years of picture storybook reviews from The Horn Book Magazine has revealed that the picture book genre does exhibit a broad spectrum of common literary devices such as satire, analogy, flashback, and metaphor. During a single class session carefully selected …
