Method Of Extracting Starch From Bacteria, J. M. Dunleavy, K. S. Gobelman-Werner Jan 1987

Method Of Extracting Starch From Bacteria, J. M. Dunleavy, K. S. Gobelman-Werner

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Corynebacterium kutscheri required 10 days of growth on semisolid medium to accumulate intracellular starch, but when the same medium was used as a broth, only l day of growth was required. C. kutscheri synthesized starch when amylose was added to nutrient agar in the substrate, but did not do so when amylopectin was substituted for amylose. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) was superior to water as a cell wash for removing substrate starch from cells before chemical treatment to remove intracellular starch. Bacterial starch was extracted from C. kutscheri cells by destroying cell walls with lysozyme and sodium lauryl sulfate, removing cellular …

Females In The Midwest And Great Plains, 1815-1890: An Annotated Bibliography, Jane Maree Kemp-Ulfers Jan 1987

Females In The Midwest And Great Plains, 1815-1890: An Annotated Bibliography, Jane Maree Kemp-Ulfers

Graduate Research Papers

Historians have traditionally viewed the Westward Movement in terms of the male experience and ignored the role of women completely. Because the woman's role in the settlement of the West was often a domestic role, it has been assigned little importance. Women were, however, instrumental in the pioneering of the West, especially in the Midwest and Great Plains. History textbooks often provide little information on women. The use of supplemental materials will, therefore, greatly add to a student's understanding of women and their contributions to American history. In addition, the inclusion of literature in the study of history can make …

The Effects Of Storytelling Experiences On Vocabulary Skills Of Second Grade Students, Gail E. Froyen Jan 1987

The Effects Of Storytelling Experiences On Vocabulary Skills Of Second Grade Students, Gail E. Froyen

Graduate Research Papers

Subjects were 40 second grade students from Lowell School, Waterloo, IA. The students met for 14 weekly forty minute sessions where they heard folktales, learned folktales to tell, and told or listened to each other tell folktales. All second grade students were tested with the ITBS Primary Battery in October 1986 (pre-test) and the subjects took the post-test in April, 1987.

The null hypothesis stated there would be no significant difference in standard scores at p<.05 using as pre-and post-tests ITBS Primary Test V-Vocabulary when compared using NCE's to the national norms of that test. Statistical analysis showed a significant difference at the p<.005 level. Therefore, the hypothesis was rejected

Standing Stocks Of Fish In Some Iowa Streams, With A Comparison Of Channelized And Natural Stream Reaches In The Southern Iowa Drift Plain, Vaughn L. Paragamian

Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science

Comparisons were made of fish populations inhabiting 11 channelized and natural stream reaches in the Southern Iowa Drift Plain and two drainage ditches in the Des Moines Lobe. Fish were sampled with rotenone, identified, enumerated, and weighed. Total densities of fish ranged from 483/ha at Cylinder Creek to 51,941/ha at Walnut Creek. Total standing stocks of fish ranged from 14 kg/ha at a channelized site on the Chariton River to 1,344 kg/ha at an unchannelized site on the same river. Number of fish species ranged from six sampled at Silver Creek to 16 sampled at Jack Creek. Channelized sites contained …

Denied Expectations, Ann Ellsworth Jan 1987

Denied Expectations, Ann Ellsworth

Draftings In

Henry James manipulates his readers unmercifully in "The Figure in the Carpet.” There are always lures, always tentative hopes that the secret, which is variously and curiously described, will in the end be made plain. In spite of the narrator's dashed expectations and waning enthusiasm to know what Vereker thought was the essential feature of his work, we readers still wonder. This paper will examine some of the ways that James arouses our desire for knowledge and meaning. By thwarting this desire, James tosses the gauntlet at our feet. It is the reader's task, not the writer's, at this point …

Draftings In

The three essays in this issue of Draftings In . . . are a sample of the papers written for the first Presidential Scholars Seminar at the University of Northern Iowa. President Constantine W. Curris began the steps towards establishing the Presidential Scholars program soon after he took office at UNI in 1983. Robert D. Talbott, Professor of History and Director of the Scholars Board, administers the program. The first group of fifteen scholars began their studies during the fall semester of 1986. I was chosen to teach their first "scholars-only" seminar on the topic of The Ancient Epics.

A Classroom Management Technique: Preparing The Classroom As An Effective Learning Environment -- One Means Of Preventive Disciplines, Kay Lents Jan 1987

A Classroom Management Technique: Preparing The Classroom As An Effective Learning Environment -- One Means Of Preventive Disciplines, Kay Lents

Graduate Research Papers

A smooth-running classroom, free from disruption and chronic misbehavior but full of students involved in learning activities, does not just happen. Such classrooms exist because the teachers work at making it happen. These teachers give careful consideration to preparation of the classroom before the first day of the school year. Classroom management is one area the Educational Testing Service is working on to place in the teacher competency examinations they are preparing (Weber, et al., 1983). Because of this emphasis, classroom management may soon be a required class for graduation in the field of education.

Student Research - Inhibition Of Microorganisms By Citrus Peel Oils, Patrick Teague Jan 1987

Student Research - Inhibition Of Microorganisms By Citrus Peel Oils, Patrick Teague

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Oils of citrus peels contain a chemical which has exhibited insecticide properties. Citrus oils might also have natural antibiotic or antifungicide properties which could prove beneficial to mankind. The purpose of this project was to analyze the possible inhibition of microorganisms by oils of citrus peels. Five citrus fruit peels were tested for bacterial or fungal inhibition on Escherichia coli, Bacillus cereus and Aspergillus niger. Oils of lemon peel showed an inhibition zone on the A. niger in the first trial. In the second experiment, all of the citrus peel oils showed an inhibition zone on the A. …

A Case For Geology, Lynn A. Brant Jan 1987

A Case For Geology, Lynn A. Brant

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Geology suffers from two enduring stereotypes. The first stereotype is that geology is "about rocks and minerals," period. It is true that the materials, the configurations of matter, studied in geology are largely rocks and minerals, but the study of geology goes much further than this simple intention. It has a lot more to say about the world in which we live than just a study of earth materials. The second stereotype concerns the reasons one should study geology. Many persons, including not a few professional geologists, regard geology's role in society as limited to the finding and producing of …

Plantportation, Carl W. Bollwinkel, Joann Silka Jan 1987

Plantportation, Carl W. Bollwinkel, Joann Silka

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

The question "How do plants get to the places where they are growing?" leads to a study of plant anatomy and the interaction of plants, people and the environment. The topic as presented here is appropriate for study in the intermediate and middle school grades but can be adapted for both lower grades and high school study. It is suggested that the activity be taught as a learning cycle. "Plantportation" is best taught in the autumn when an abundance of seeds is available.

The Text As Elusion, Or Was I Reading Henry James's "The Figure In The Carpet"?, Michael J. Mckinlay Jan 1987

The Text As Elusion, Or Was I Reading Henry James's "The Figure In The Carpet"?, Michael J. Mckinlay

Draftings In

Elusiveness, the house-of-mirrors illusion of the figure in the carpet, works on all levels and on all readers. But like any illusion in the house-of-mirrors, the only clearly defined image is the one right in front of us. Oddly enough, that image is a particular reflection of ourselves. We must concentrate on that image to find what the reading means for us before trying to define the variant distortions, the readings of others.

Regressive Evolution? Animal/Human Relationships In Homer And Today, Debbi Hoepner Jan 1987

Regressive Evolution? Animal/Human Relationships In Homer And Today, Debbi Hoepner

Draftings In

Civilization is reaching ahead. Humans never stop changing; changing their world, that is. We want more, better, and quicker advancements: flights to far planets; cures for all diseases; cheap, synthetic replacements; and computers and robots to work for us. All these inventions seem to suggest evolutionary progress, but is there an area where evolution is halting, or even regressing?
