An Economical Laminar-Flow Microbe-Free Chamber For Culturing Small Plants, J. M. Dunleavy
An Economical Laminar-Flow Microbe-Free Chamber For Culturing Small Plants, J. M. Dunleavy
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
An economical plant growth chamber, 16 cm in diameter and 50 cm high, was made from two 4-liter glass beakers. The bottom was removed from one beaker, and a 1 cm hole cut in the bottom of the other. The bottomless beaker, when placed atop the other, telescoped slightly for firm support. Sand was placed in the bottom of the chamber as a growth substrate. A polyethylene bag was placed over the two beakers and filtered air (under pressure) and nutrient solution entered the chamber through rubber tubing. Six chambers, each with an open petri dish of nutrient agar in …

Paradox As A Family Ingredient, Katherine L. Fluke
Paradox As A Family Ingredient, Katherine L. Fluke
Graduate Research Papers
Several problems are evident when examining the use of paradox in family therapy. Experts in the field vary on the definition of paradox; how to label and categorize paradox; when to use or not use paradox; and the very nature of paradox as a therapy ingredient. Many experts express the opinion that paradox is part of the essence of life and relationships, particularly the therapist/client relationship. In this paper it will be assumed the reader has a knowledge of family· therapy and a frame of reference or theory base from which they operate. How paradox can be defined; the nature …

Preserving Natural Diversity In Iowa's Loess Hills: Challenges And Opportunities, Dean M. Roosa, Donald R. Farrar, Mark Ackelson
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The Loess Hills of western Iowa, due to their extent and depth, are of national importance for geological reasons. They also harbor a large portion of Iowa's remaining biological diversity, the significance of which has been underscored by studies sponsored by the State Preserves Advisory Board during the past several years. A complex of rare species of plants and animals exist in the rugged terrain; many are Great Plains species which find their only Iowa stations in these Loess Hills. Management problems, such as rapid invasion of prairies by woody species, are manifest in this landform and must be addressed …

A Roadside Technique Using Scent Lures For Measuring Relative White-Tailed Deer Abundance, William L. Franklin
A Roadside Technique Using Scent Lures For Measuring Relative White-Tailed Deer Abundance, William L. Franklin
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The response of captive white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) to selected commercial scent lures and the feasibility of measuring the relative abundance of wild deer with roadside scent stations were studied. Penned deer first smelled scented capsules 5.7 times more frequently than unscented controls. There was no significant difference among 5 scents tested as to whether they were smelled or not, in the amount of time deer spend smelling them, nor any preference for sex- or food-derived scents. In a high deer density area the visitation rate to scented stations was 149 and unscented was 95. In a low deer density …

Morphology Of The Labial Gland System Of The Mature Larva Of The Black Carpenter Ant, Camponotus Pennsylvanicus (Degeer), R. S. Petralia, C. F. Haut
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The morphology of the labial gland system of mature larvae of Camponotus pennsylvanicus is described. Regions of the labial gland system (gland tubes, reservoirs, thin and thick portions of the paired ducts, and common duct) were examined with electron microscopy, and a comparison of organelle and cell morphology was made. The gland tubes secrete silk which is stored in the reservoirs. The final water and/ or ion content of the secretion may be modified by the paired ducts and common duct.

Student Research - Electromagnetic Field Effects On Succor Creek Desert Shrubs, Sonya Folkman
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
There have been indications that exposure to electromagnetic fields produced by voltage power lines have permanent effects on living organisms. I found studies on electromagnetic field effects on rodents and humans, but there has been little research done with plants. The purpose of my study was to record any measurable effects on desert shrubs in an area of Succor Creek, Oregon, produced by an adjacent 500 KV power line.
Foraging Site Selection Of The Brown Creeper (Certhia Americana) In Relation To Temperature In Central Iowa, David Franklin Webber
Foraging Site Selection Of The Brown Creeper (Certhia Americana) In Relation To Temperature In Central Iowa, David Franklin Webber
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
From 20 February to 4 April 1983, 423 observations were made of foraging brown creepers (Certhia americana) in central Iowa. Diameter at breast height (DBH) of the tree used as a foraging site, time, temperature (°C), and general weather conditions were recorded during each observation. Ambient temperature was related to foraging site selection; as temperature decreased, brown creepers selected larger diameter trees more exclusively as foraging sites. As ambient temperature increased, the creepers included smaller diameter trees.

Geology Of The Loess Hills Region, E. Arthur Bettis Iii, Jean C. Prior, George R. Hallberg, Richard L. Handy
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The narrow ridges and steep bluffs which extend in a narrow band along the Missouri Valley form the Loess Hills region. These bluffs stand in sharp contrast to the flat-lying Missouri River floodplain. The unique ridge forms are composed of thick accumulations of late Wisconsinan wind-blown silt (loess). Older Quaternary deposits as well as Cretaceous and Pennsylvanian bedrock outcrop beneath the loess in the region. The intricate texture of the topography results from the combined effects of eolian deposition, fluvial erosion, and mass-wasting. Physical properties of loess allow it to maintain nearly vertical faces when exposed. These properties also produce …
The Design Of Potential Anti-Parkinsonian Drugs: What Is The Dopaminergic Pharmacophore In Ergot Alkaloids?, Joseph G. Cannon
The Design Of Potential Anti-Parkinsonian Drugs: What Is The Dopaminergic Pharmacophore In Ergot Alkaloids?, Joseph G. Cannon
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
The problem of defining structural similarities between apomorphine and certain ergot alkaloid derivatives, two chemically dissimilar types of drugs having similar pharmacological effects, is addressed by considering the three-dimensional geometry of the molecules. Conformational analytical concepts can be used to design new chemical entities and to assess structure-activity relationship hypotheses, and indeed this strategy has led to synthesis of new categories of potentially clinically valuable agents. Some conclusions are presented with respect to the combinations of atoms within the molecules in various chemical categories of dopaminergic agonists, which are responsible for the observed pharmacological effects. On the basis of these …

Samples collected by seining dike fields and abandoned channels were' dominated by Cyprinidae and Centrarchidae. Electrofishing samples were dominated by flathead catfish (Pylodictus olivaris), gold eye (Hiodon alosoides), common carp (Cyprinus carpio), river carpsucker, (Carpiodes carpio), gizzard shad (Dorosoma cepedianum), and blue sucker (Cycleptus elongatus) in dike fields and revetted banks and by gizzard shad, river carpsucker, and bigmouth buffalo (lctiobus cyprinellus) in the abandoned channels. …
Behavioral Considerations In The Live Capture Of Guanacos With Spring-Activated Foot Snares, Robert T. Jefferson Jr., William L. Franklin
Behavioral Considerations In The Live Capture Of Guanacos With Spring-Activated Foot Snares, Robert T. Jefferson Jr., William L. Franklin
Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science
Due to the potential repugnancy and laws preventing the use of kill-snares for large mammals, live-snaring is rarely used by field biologists for capturing ungulates. In a study of the socioecology of the South American guanaco (Lama guanicoe), spring-activated snares were tested and proved to be a successful technique for safely capturing juvenile animals because of a knowledge of individual and social behavior, especially the predictable daily use of such social attractants as preferred foraging sites and dust baths. Live capture with foot snares has potential application to other ungulates if behavioral considerations are taken into account.
Improving Instructional Design Consultation Through The Use Of Nonverbal Communication, Julia K. Smith Brooks
Improving Instructional Design Consultation Through The Use Of Nonverbal Communication, Julia K. Smith Brooks
Graduate Research Papers
Communication skills play a critical role in the instructional design (ID) process. As an instructional materials developer, the instructional designer must rely heavily on verbal communication skills; as an instructional consultant, the instructional designer must rely heavily on nonverbal communication skills. The importance of nonverbal communication skills is underscored in the literature, which suggests that approximately 90% of the message in a two-way communication is based on nonverbal elements of the message (Englesman, 1974; Garrison, 1984). Thus, an effective instructional designer must develop the ability to interpret and send nonverbal messages properly.
