Economic Changes From The Use Of Biotechnology In Production Agriculture, Loren W. Tauer
Economic Changes From The Use Of Biotechnology In Production Agriculture, Loren W. Tauer
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The potential economic impact of biotechnology in production agriculture is discussed. There are challenges and difficulties in completing economic research when little production information is available on biotechnologies. I argue that little impact differences exist between cost-reducing versus output-increasing technological change. Rapid technological change results in low average returns in agriculture but continuous early innovators earn higher returns. Various plant and animal technologies are presented and discussed.
Benthic Macroinvertebrate Habitat Associations Of The Channelized Middle Missouri River, James B. Barnum, Roger W. Bachmann
Benthic Macroinvertebrate Habitat Associations Of The Channelized Middle Missouri River, James B. Barnum, Roger W. Bachmann
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Benthic macroinvertebrates associated with navigation structures (dikes, dike pools, revetted banks) and abandoned channels on the Missouri River at the Iowa-Nebraska border were sampled in June, August, and October 1983 to determine the invertebrate community structure of these habitats. Invertebrate densities were greatest in the abandoned channel habitat (to over 13,000/m2), while diversities were greatest in the dike and revetment habitats. Greater habitat diversity contributed to greater organism diversity in the dike and revetment habitats while sediment homogeneity and stability presumably contributed to greater organism densities in the abandoned channel habitat. Dike pools had turbulent eddy currents, which …

Dialogues With Inner Audiences: Support For Improving Low Achievers' Reading Abilities, Linda Langin Hugh
Dialogues With Inner Audiences: Support For Improving Low Achievers' Reading Abilities, Linda Langin Hugh
Graduate Research Papers
According to the Report of the Commission on Reading summarized in the book Becoming a Nation of Readers (Anderson, Hiebert, Scott, Wilkinson, 1985), reading is a basic life ability. With the demands made upon today's students to experience in-depth thinking and reading, it is necessary for them to develop higher level reading abilities.
Environmental Education: Developing An Environmental Ethic, Karen A. Neff
Environmental Education: Developing An Environmental Ethic, Karen A. Neff
Graduate Research Papers
Environmental education continues to be a topic of educational concern. The environmental movement peaked in the 1970s with the observance of the first nation-wide Earth Day, the passage of the Environmental Education Act by Congress, and several conferences, all designed to foster an awareness of the ever-increasing need for environmental education programs.
Learned Helplessness And Reading: A Review Of The Literature, Doug Murphy
Learned Helplessness And Reading: A Review Of The Literature, Doug Murphy
Graduate Research Papers
Teachers have long seen apathy and disinterest in some of their students. Poor students with little apparent ability also seem to be the ones who try the least. Teachers have usually accepted this as the status quo and have put forth little effort to change lethargic students. Often, if efforts have been made to motivate the student, the efforts have been misguided, albeit, genuine. Very little has been generally understood about the passive students and how they think, are motivated, and perceive themselves. Such students are present in nearly every classroom, yet most commonly they are given less attention. It …
The Middle School: A Review Of Current Literature, Lindy K. Daters
The Middle School: A Review Of Current Literature, Lindy K. Daters
Graduate Research Papers
Education in the United States has presented many patterns of school organization. Separate junior and senior high schools were suggested in the early 1900 1 s, but the grade levels and ages for distinguishing these divisions were unclear (Wiles & Bondi, 1981). The junior high was designed to bridge the gap between elementary and high school. It usually included grades 7-8-9. An alternative to the junior high school, the middle school, began to emerge in the late 1950 1 s. The middle school was designed to facilitate grades 6-7-8. Its development was primarily to relieve overcrowding and to provide an …

Cognitive Ability And Mathematics Instruction As Factors In Mathematical Problem-Solving Achievement Of Fifth Graders, Harriet Sharp
Cognitive Ability And Mathematics Instruction As Factors In Mathematical Problem-Solving Achievement Of Fifth Graders, Harriet Sharp
Graduate Research Papers
Problem solving has been an area of educational concern for many years. Research completed as far back as 1926 and 1932 centered on comparing methods of solving problems or identifying types of errors students made when solving verbal problems. Research has focused on characteristics of the problems, characteristics of those who are successful or unsuccessful at solving problems, and teaching strategies that may improve students' abilities in problem solving.
The Effects Of Motor Activity Programs On The Self-Concept And Movement Confidence Of Schoolage Students, Linda K. Squires
The Effects Of Motor Activity Programs On The Self-Concept And Movement Confidence Of Schoolage Students, Linda K. Squires
Graduate Research Papers
The purpose 0£ this paper is to review the relevant literature on the effects of motor activity programs on the development of the self-concept. The literature suggests that the pre-school and schoolage years are a critical period for the development of a positive self-concept. How a child feels about him or herself physically, is also a critical factor in the development of a positive self-concept. Research has demonstrated that the self-concept of individuals can be significantly effected through participation in motor activity programs which provide success experiences for the participants. The motor activity programs can be implemented, through modified skill …
The Portrayal Of The European Immigrant In The Historical Fiction For Children And Young Adults, Gayle T. Wood
The Portrayal Of The European Immigrant In The Historical Fiction For Children And Young Adults, Gayle T. Wood
Graduate Research Papers
This research study used a content analysis technique to assess the portrayal of the European who emigrated to the United States from Europe between the years of 1832 and 1932. Portrayals were found in 15 works of historical fiction written for children or young adults and published after 1950 in the United States.
Descriptive occurrences in each book were examined for the realistic portrayal of the immigrant experience in six general areas: (1) the Americanization process, (2) the educational experience of the immigrant, (3) employment opportunities, (4) family relations, (5) conditions encountered during the emigration process, and (6) reasons for …

The purpose of the study was to investigate how various volume-fractions of the abaca fiber in the concrete mix could affect the mechanical properties of the concrete matrix.
A concrete design mix containing a volume ratio of 1.0 part Type I Portland...cernent and 3.0 parts sand was utilized in the preparation of laboratory test samples. Abaca fibers were …
Busqueda De Identidad Cultural En Dos Novelas Latinoamericanas: Los Pasos Perdidos De Alejo Carpentier Y Quarup De Antonio Callado, Ana Beatriz Rodrigues Gonçalves
Busqueda De Identidad Cultural En Dos Novelas Latinoamericanas: Los Pasos Perdidos De Alejo Carpentier Y Quarup De Antonio Callado, Ana Beatriz Rodrigues Gonçalves
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Two Latin American works, Quarup (Callado, 1967) and Los pasos perdidos (Carpentier, 1959) interpret in their protagonists the perennial problem of the modern alienated human in the metropolis. The introduction to this thesis shows how this alienated protagonist is a central preoccupation in Latin American literature since the beginning of modern urbanization and industrialization in the hemisphere. The loss of any real human identity in modern life inevitably leads to the search for new, cultural and personal identity. Furthermore, the conjoining of these two works in a single study contraposes the literatures of Hispanic America (Los pasos perdidos)and Portuguese America …

This study investigates the history and role of the native forest in an urban area of about 100 square miles, encompassing the cities of Waterloo, Cedar Falls, and Evansdale in Black Hawk County, Iowa. It examines various human influences in an attempt to determine how important each has been in preserving or destroying the natural forest.
The original forests in the study area were concentrated along the rivers and adjacent bluffs. The most serious impacts to the upland forests have been agriculture, residential and commercial development, whereas the floodplain forests have been most affected by industrial expansion, gravel mining, flood …

Branching, Ed Harris
Branching, Ed Harris
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
For many years I have observed and photographed visual patterns. Sometimes I stumble upon them, and other times I search to find them, record them and perhaps make some sense of the relationships I see in the many variations. In the early '70s I began to put these observations together and to classify the many patterns into branching and layering. These two systems I see as primal information from which the human can better understand an underlying structure in the universe. These universal patterns act as building blocks to many diverse and complex forms and phenomena. The images and ideas …
What Every Young Iowa Child Should Know, Judith Amfahr
What Every Young Iowa Child Should Know, Judith Amfahr
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
For where do we have greater opportunities to teach awareness of environment, the beauty of nature, and the good life, than right here in Iowa? And regardless of your district science curriculum, these themes can be tucked between, or incorporated into existing units of study. Often it takes just the right story to stimulate thinking and encourage children to ask questions and seek knowledge. Share with the children in your class the best authors that are available. Try to select authors that reflect love of the environment and real life experiences in their writings. The fiction books that you use …
