Licensure Of Professional Mental Health Counselors In Iowa, Jeffrey Don Hasselmann Jan 1988

Licensure Of Professional Mental Health Counselors In Iowa, Jeffrey Don Hasselmann

Graduate Research Papers

The issue of licensure has divided the profession of mental health counseling (Arbuckle, 1977; Cottingham, 1978; Sweeney and Witmer, 1977). Some professional mental health counselors adhere to the philosophy that licensure advances the profession (Carroll, Griggs & Halligan, 1977; Sweeney & Witmer, 1977). Opponents to licensure purport that licensing in itself will not advance the field nor will it necessarily ensure the delivery of quality psychological services (Davis, 1981; Gross, 1977, 1978; Tiedeman, 1979).

The Selection, Retelling And Illustration Of A Fairy Tale, Linda Rathe Jan 1988

The Selection, Retelling And Illustration Of A Fairy Tale, Linda Rathe

Graduate Research Papers

Fairy tales continue to be a very popular form of children's literature. The contributions that fairy tales make to children's developmental needs have been investigated by various experts, who have analyzed the stories in terms of the theories of Freud, Jung, Piaget, Kohlberg, and various social scientists. In view of the consensus that it is best if children have access to both a large number and a large variety of folk and fairy tales, a fair tale from a translation of the Grimms' collection was selected, retold, and illustrated. This was done in a manner responsive to the following developmental …

Loess Hills: A National Natural Landmark, Jean C. Prior Jan 1988

Loess Hills: A National Natural Landmark, Jean C. Prior

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Loess is one of the most common geologic materials found on the land surface in the Midwest. This can also be said for the lower Mississippi Valley, the Palouse district of eastern Washington, central and eastern Europe, the Ukraine of southwestern Russia and eastern China. The word itself is German in origin, and as late as the 1860s was regarded as a provincial name for deposits along the Rhine Valley. Loess, glacial history, native grasslands and productive agricultural regions are linked together across the mid-latitudes of the northern hemisphere.

The Effects Of The Summer Forest Fires On Yellowstone National Park, Jack De Golia Jan 1988

The Effects Of The Summer Forest Fires On Yellowstone National Park, Jack De Golia

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Throughout the summer, the nation watched as fires swept through Yellowstone National Park. Media coverage made people from all parts of the United States aware of the change that was taking place in Wyoming. Concerns ranged from the effect of the fires on the park, its attractions (such as the geysers) and the animals to worries of what the smoke being released by the burning trees would do to the atmosphere.

Combined Community Resources Directory For Turkey Valley School And Its Community, Janet Carspecken Jan 1988

Combined Community Resources Directory For Turkey Valley School And Its Community, Janet Carspecken

Graduate Research Papers

The object of this research project was to compile a combined community resources directory that would meet the functional, educational, and recreational information needs of both the students and teachers of a school district, as well as the members of the communities that make up that school district. Telephone interviews were conducted and questionnaires were sent to gather the data on the information sources. Approximately 800 individuals, private businesses and government offices and agencies were contacted. The information gathered from these sources was then organized and printed in a directory format. The completed directory contained listings for thirteen individuals, two …

Vonnegut's Galapagos: The Myth Of Art, Vice Versa, (Or Something), David J. Gibson

Draftings In

There exists an inherent difficulty in the reading of any of Kurt Vonnegut's works. That is, the circular nature of his tales always leads you from struggling with one topic or concept to struggling with another related, but slightly different approach to the given work. Before you know it you are back where you started, perhaps somewhat more enlightened, but usually just a bit more perplexed. Such is the nature of the process of re-reading.

In Memoriam: An Analysis Of Texts Of Terror, Elizabeth A. Wenthe

Draftings In

Texts of Terror by Phyllis Trible relates the stories of four women from the Old Testament: Hagar, the slave who bore a son to Abraham, and then was exiled and rejected (Genesis 16:1-16; 21:9-21); Tamar, the daughter of David who was raped by her own brother and then both rejected and discredited as the consequences of his lust (2 Samuel 13:1-22); an unnamed concubine from Bethlehem who was attacked and raped by "three wicked men of the city,' then dismembered and discarded (Judges 19:1-30); and finally the daughter of Jephthah who was sacrificed as the victim of a faithless vow …

Preparing Mammal Skulls For Classroom Use, Donald J. Perschau Jan 1988

Preparing Mammal Skulls For Classroom Use, Donald J. Perschau

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Classroom materials for student use are very expensive to purchase from biological supply houses. In many cases, teachers are left with two choices when it comes to laboratory materials, either find some way to produce their own or do without. Preserved and live specimens fall into this category particularly with respect to the higher vertebrates. While it may be impossible, or at least impractical, to keep a suitable number of birds or mammals, it is possible and may even be preferred to study skins, skeletal and other preserved material. Mammal skulls are easy to collect, prepare and preserve for use …

A writing center, such as the one at the University of Northern Iowa, is designed to help students improve their writing through tutoring on a one-to-one basis. Most of the tutoring is done by peer tutors who are students with some ability to write themselves, but more importantly, who have demonstrated a willingness and the patience to help others learn as well.

Doctors In Spite Of Themselves, Jill Minehart

Draftings In

In and of itself, Mark Vonnegut's The Eden Express (1975) - a harrowing account of his experience with mental illness - is captivating. Well-written and perceptive, it expresses a unique view of a particular kind of mental disorder and has been hailed as a "textbook" of sorts for those suffering from or working with victims of schizophrenia. However, beyond its individual merits, The Eden Express serves as an interesting complement to the novels and ideas of Mark's father, novelist Kurt Vonnegut.

An Industry Perspective On The Benefits Of And Regulation Of Genetically Engineered Plants, Nicholas M. Frey Jan 1988

An Industry Perspective On The Benefits Of And Regulation Of Genetically Engineered Plants, Nicholas M. Frey

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The seed industry has routinely incorporated new technology into its research and development programs. Plant generic engineering is the most recent technology to be utilized for seed product development efforts. New sources of herbicide, insect, and disease resistance are being incorporated into crop plants using cellular and molecular biology techniques.

New regulatory guidelines have been developed which require regulatory approval before genetically engineered plants can be reseed in the field and ultimately marketed. The impact of these regulations on product development is unclear. Hopefully a dialogue will develop among industry, government agencies, and the public such that reasonable and appropriate …

A Vascular Flora Of The Swaledale Railroad Prairie In North Central Iowa, Thomas L. Eddy Jan 1988

A Vascular Flora Of The Swaledale Railroad Prairie In North Central Iowa, Thomas L. Eddy

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

"Railroad prairies" are remnant native grasslands that grow along railroad right-of-ways. The Swaledale railroad prairie, which is in north central Iowa, occurs along the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad Company right-of-way in Cerro Gordo County.

The railroad right-of-way and an abandoned sand pit, which lies adjacent to the railroad embankment, harbor a collection of tallgrass prairie remnants. The sand pit supplied earthen fill which was used to elevate the original railroad embankment, circa 1887. It is noteworthy that the method of excavation for fill material helped to preserve earthen knolls that are covered with original tallgrass prairie.

Plant collections were acquired …

Impact Of Biotechnology On Agriculture Productivity, Roger A. Kleese Jan 1988

Impact Of Biotechnology On Agriculture Productivity, Roger A. Kleese

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Biotechnology is a diverse array of technologies which today are in various stages of evolution and development. To understand them and the potential application of these technologies to agriculture, it is helpful to consider them in a historical perspective. In addition, it is important to understand the interdependence of biotechnologies on traditional, well developed technologies. The commercial development of biotechnology is more difficult than imagined even as recently as five years ago. Also, the problems being addressed generally demand a much better understanding of the physiology and biochemistry of the plant and animal systems under study. Nonetheless, there is a …

Evaluation Of Fish Eradication And Game-Fish Restocking In A Central Iowa Pond, Dennis L. Scarnecchia Jan 1988

Evaluation Of Fish Eradication And Game-Fish Restocking In A Central Iowa Pond, Dennis L. Scarnecchia

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Changes in fish community and population structure associated with fish eradication and subsequent restocking were investigated in a small (0. 25 ha) impoundment in Boone County, Iowa. In September 1985, when fish were eradicated with rotenone, the fish community consisted of eight species. Large numbers of small bluegills (Lepomis macrochirus), green sunfish (Lepomis ryanellus), and stunted crappies (Pomoxis spp.) dominated the pond numerically, but seven large carp (Cyprinus carpio) and 18 large bigmouth buffalo (lctiobus ryprinellus) constituted 80% of the total biomass. The only quality angling (popular species of desirable size) was for a few largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) and …

Using Life History And Ecology As Tools To Manage A Threatened Salamander Species, Scott R. Mcwilliams, Marilyn D. Bachmann

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Selected aspects of the life history and ecology of the small-mouthed salamander (Ambystoma texanum Matthes) relevant to the management of this threatened species in Iowa are presented. The population studied utilizes flooded woodland habitat during courtship, breeding and egg laying, and during the entire larval period. Larval foraging strategies in this habitat included ontogenetic but no diel shifts in prey selection. Synchronous, nocturnal breeding migration allowed effective use of drift fences fur capture of adults used in captive breeding, courtship behavior studies, and the estimation of breeding population size. Large numbers of spennatophores, apparently indiscriminate mate choice, and the relatively …

An Interpretative History Of The Proceedings Of The Iowa Academy Of Science, Don C. Norton

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

The Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science was first published in 1887 and has continued yearly except for 1905. Business reports and contributed papers constituted most of the volumes. Publication of symposia has become more popular in recent years. Financial and mechanical problems have caused strains at rimes, but these have largely been solved after publication became independent of the State Printer.
