It's really a privilege for a country boy to be here at UNI talking to such a distinguished group. Let me take a few minutes to let you know about my roots. I was born and raised in a small Minnesota community of less than 500 - graduated in 1950 in a class of 16. In my home town I know all of the dogs by first name and they wagged their tails when I greeted them. In third grade, I also knew all of the local heroes and they knew me. For fun we pulled some pranks like anyone …

Performances At An Aids Memorial Quilt Display: An Ethnographic Study Of Rehearsal, Joyce Anne Flodin
Graduate Research Papers
Several tentative research questions posed early in the study focused on the audience. The study of audience was later abandoned because it would not have been feasible for one researcher to conduct analyses of audiences while also observing performers. A study of these audiences would have been interesting because these were not a typical audience coming to a theatre for entertainment. These audiences were emotionally tied to the topic of the texts. Most of the audience members were highly knowledgeable about AIDS and related issues. The only audience analyses in this study were the directors' and performers' impressions of audience …

In recent years, more than at any time in the history of education, schools are looked upon to meet the emotional and social needs of students, as well as to teach reading, writing, and arithmetic (Ellis & Bernard, 1983). This is coming at a time when we have witnessed a steady increase in adolescent suicide, drug abuse and pregnancy, in addition to adolescent anxiety, depression, guilt, stress and alienation (Vernon, 1983).

Participation In My Government: What Difference Can My Voice Make?: A Seven-Week Unit For Eleventh Graders, Jane C. Behrens

Despite courses in civics or U.S. government, many students look with apathy upon community or civic affairs, perhaps because they feel that such dry-sounding "stuff" as city codes and regulations have no relevance for them. In addition, adolescence is typically a time of rebellion against authority and institutionalism. This seven week unit, designed for eleventh graders, has been written to help young people see that their government was created to work for them, not against them, and that their opinions and ideas are important to the whole community.
Students will learn the benefits of making themselves heard by the public, …

Today emphasis has been placed on collaboration as it applies to education. Research reveals that cooperative learning, depending on how it is carried out, can increase achievement as well as social skills (Slavin, 1983, p. 443). In addition, collaborative skills in and of themselves are necessary in many vocations. However, according to Johnson et al (1986), "children and adolescents are not born instinctively knowing how to collaborate with others" (p. 73). Learning collaborative skills is an important prerequisite for academic learning, and achievement improves as students become more effective in working with each other (Johnson, Johnson, & Holubec, 1986, p. …
Gene Transfer In Crop Improvement - An Introduction And Overview, Robert M. Goodman
Gene Transfer In Crop Improvement - An Introduction And Overview, Robert M. Goodman
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The application of recombinant DNA technology to plant breeding promises important applications in agriculture and advances in many plant science disciplines. Gene transfer at the molecular level can be routinely accomplished in an increasing number of plant species. For many of the world's important crops, new methods or refinements of proven methods will be needed and are being developed. Experience with gene regulation in transgenic plants is accumulating in many laboratories around the world. The action of any particular gene cannot be predicted precisely without reference to the genetic background in which it acts, but, qualitatively speaking, the cis-acting elements …

Engineering Proteinase Inihibitor Genes For Plant Defense Against Predators, Clarence A. Ryan, Thomas Moloshok, Gregory Pearce, Gynhueng An, Robert W. Thornburg, Gerald Hall, Russell Johnson, Edward E. Farmer, Curtis Palm
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Small proteinaceous inhibitors (Mr<20,000) of the digestive serine proteinases of animals and microorganisms are found as moderately abundant proteins in storage organs and leaves of many plant genera. The proteins are powerful inhibitors of the digestive enzymes of plant predators and therefore are considered to be part of the array of defensive chemicals of plants. Proteinase inhibitor genes show excellent promise, using DNA technology, to manipulate plant genomes to express these biologically active proteins in order to improve natural defense systems. Members of two unrelated families of serine proteinase inhibitors found in tomato and potato plants, called Inhibitor I (monomer Mr 8000) and Inhibitor II (monomer Mr 12,300), are under both environmental and developmental regulation in different tissues of the plants. Genes coding for wound-inducible Inhibitors I and II have been isolated from both tomato and potato genomes and characterized. Tobacco plants have been transformed with the chimeric genes containing wound-inducible promoters fused with the reporter gene, chloramphenicol acetyl transferase, to assess promoter function and signal transmission. Transacting factors that regulate their expression in response to wounding are also being identified and purified. Intact genes are being employed to transform agriculturally important crop plants to determine their potential usefulness to enhance defensive capabilities of plants against herbivores and pathogens.

Plant Parasitic Fungi Of Four Tallgrass Prairies Of Northern Iowa: Distribution And Prevalence, Lois H. Tiffany, Judy F. Shearer, George Knaphus
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Throughout the 1980's, most intensively during the past five years, collections of fungal parasites of prairie plants have been made at various times of the growing season from four prairie preserves, Cayler, Freda Haffner Kettlehole, Hayden, and Stinson prairies, in northern Iowa. A total of 216 species of parasitic fungi were collected on 129 prairie plant hosts. Ninety-nine of the fungi were not previously documented from Iowa. Also, fungus species previously reported were found on 72 host species not included in earlier records.

Correlation Of Raccoon Pelt Qualities With Age, Sex, And Physical Condition, Travis C. Glenn
Correlation Of Raccoon Pelt Qualities With Age, Sex, And Physical Condition, Travis C. Glenn
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Fur harvesters and fur buyers have many intuitive ideas about how raccoons' pelt qualities differ due to age, sex, or physical condition. We tried to demonstrate correlations between age classes (juvenile and adult), sex, and physical condition and the quality of raccoon pelts. Quality of pelts was described in three objective ways: size of the pelt, density of the pelage (primeness), and color of the pelage. Physical condition was measured by kidney fat index (KFI) and skin fat index (SFI). Size of the pelts was correlated with age, sex, and both measures of physical condition. Primeness of the pelts was …

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
In the spring of 1977, in Ames, a struggling biology major who had earlier shown some promise was ordered by his advisor: "Go to Lakeside Lab and take Dick Bovbjerg's Aquatic Ecology course." I did and it worked. I've parlayed that early potential into a career. And like so many others I return to Lakeside, the first time to take another course, then to do my Master's research. More recently I come back to teach the Field Vertebrate Zoology course. Likewise, Dick has shifted from mentor to colleague, and we've co-authored a paper (Lannoo and Bovbjerg, 1985). Now, I am …
Climatic Influences On Annual Variations In Water Transparency In Lake West Okoboji, Roger W. Bachmann
Climatic Influences On Annual Variations In Water Transparency In Lake West Okoboji, Roger W. Bachmann
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Secchi disk transparencies, chlorophyll a concentrations, and total phosphorus concentrations were studied in Lake West Okoboji, Iowa, in the summers of 1971-7 3 and 1987-89. The average summer Secchi disk transparencies varied from a low of 2.5 to a high of 5.5 m during the study. The variations in the transparency of lake West Okoboji from year to year seem to be related to climatic factors such as the amounts of spring precipitation in the watershed and probably reflect changes in the annual inputs of plant nutrients. There is some indication that climatic conditions that cause the period of deep …

Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Ideas and approaches central to Science/Technology/Society (STS) have been introduced via the Chautauqua program in classrooms of nearly 1,000 Iowa teachers of grades 4 through 9 since 1985-86. Assessment of the results of STS instruction has been central to the effort supported by the National Science Teachers Association, the Iowa Utility Association, the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the University of Iowa. Some of the emerging results demonstrate the advantages of an STS focus for school science.

A Survey Of The Benthic Macroinvertebrates Of The Big Spring Basin, Iowa, Jack O. Kennedy, John G. Miller Iii
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Benthic macroinvertebrates were collected in the Big Spring Basin, located in northeastern Iowa, from May through October 1988. The purpose of the study was to develop baseline information on the benthic organisms present in the basin. A total of 167 taxa including seven species of leeches, five genera of snails, three genera of clams, one crayfish genus and over 150 taxa of aquatic insects were identified with the majority of the organisms having been reported in Iowa previously. Benthic organisms not usually encountered in Iowa include the planarian, Cura formanii; the isopod, Lirceus; the beedes, Enrxhrus, Hydrophilus, and llybius; the …

Time To Metamorphosis As A Function Of Larval Size In A Population Of Ambystoma Tigrinum Salamanders Consisting Of Cannibal And Typical Morph Phenotypes, Michael J. Lannoo, Michael P. Sweet, Nancy M. Ladehoff, Edmund S. Fangman, William B. Collins
Time To Metamorphosis As A Function Of Larval Size In A Population Of Ambystoma Tigrinum Salamanders Consisting Of Cannibal And Typical Morph Phenotypes, Michael J. Lannoo, Michael P. Sweet, Nancy M. Ladehoff, Edmund S. Fangman, William B. Collins
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Salamander larvae of the species Ambystoma tigrinum are dimorphic in northwestern Iowa. In addition to common typical morphs, there exist rare, specialized cannibal morphs, which are induced environmentally by crowding. Cannibal morph phenotypes are characterized morphologically by their large size, proportionately large heads and hypertrophied vomerine teeth, and behaviorally by facultative cannibalism. During metamorphosis amphibians are particularly sensitive to predation. To help understand why cannibal morphs are uncommon, we have raised cannibal and typical morphs in isolation and under crowded conditions to compare the timing and duration of metamorphosis between these morphs. Results show that larger larvae, most of which …

A Summer Course In Invertebrate Developmental Biology At Iowa Lakeside Laboratory: A Unique Experience, Carol W. Schutte, Dale J. Witt, Nicole Y. Janosek, Douglas E. Robinson, Edwin C. Powell, George G. Brown
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The course, "Developmental Biology of Selected Invertebrates'', has been offered in alternate years at Iowa Lakeside Laboratory (Ill) on Lake West Okoboji, Dickinson County, Iowa, since the first summer session of 1983. This course has taken advantage of the great diversity of invertebrates found in the Ill area and has demonstrated to students and faculty alike the exciting phenomena and principles of developmental biology. The course is continuously evolving as new experiments and observations are discovered with each offering of the course.
Hercule Poirot V. Reality: Murder Mysteries As An Epistemic Force, Deborah M. Geisler
Hercule Poirot V. Reality: Murder Mysteries As An Epistemic Force, Deborah M. Geisler
Iowa Journal of Communication
On Monday, October 23, 1989, a pregnant Massachusetts attorney was brutally murdered by a gunshot wound to the head. Two and a half weeks later, her infant son, delivered by Caesarian section, also died. And this murder of Carol Stuart shocked and appalled much of the nation. It was a murder bound to catch national attention-a white, suburban woman supposedly killed in cold blood by an unidentified black man. An area manhunt was launched; rewards were offered; scholarships to the victim's alma mater were established; and Boston-area residents demanded that the murderer be caught.
But nearly every week, not far …

Twenty-three percent of the books showed at least some negativity; forty-eight percent had at lea.st one female main or musical supporting character, forty-six percent rated …
Teaching Values Through Literature, Carla Jean Church
Teaching Values Through Literature, Carla Jean Church
Graduate Research Papers
Schooling is the common experience of all youth. Teachers, each day, in every class, are dealing with values. The standards that are set, the actions approved, the way the subjects are presented, the teachers personal relations with students, stimulation of consistent thought and acceptable conduct all exert strong influences (The Educational Policies Commission, 1951). It is no longer a question of whether or not educators should teach values, but rather how should this be accomplished .. Through a historical look at values education, teachers can gain the necessary background knowledge which will enable them to incorporate values throughout the curriculum.
