A Project Involving Cooperative Learning Pairs Working With Problem-Solving Computer Software In A Middle School Setting, Timothy J. Feinup Jan 1990

A Project Involving Cooperative Learning Pairs Working With Problem-Solving Computer Software In A Middle School Setting, Timothy J. Feinup

Graduate Research Papers

Within the past ten years, schools have increasingly embraced the development of the computer as an important media aid in the instruction of problem-solving thinking skills. Cooperative learning strategies, rather than individualistic or competitive learning styles, during this same period, have become a major trend in developing conceptual instructional tasks, including the development of problem-solving strategies. This paper presents a curriculum development project for middle school students that combines the planned activities and outcomes of computer-assisted instruction with cooperative learning to develop problem-solving strategies and positive social skills.

Assessing Children's Involvement In The Writing Process, Karen Schwarz Jan 1990

Assessing Children's Involvement In The Writing Process, Karen Schwarz

Graduate Research Papers

Brian, a first grader, glanced up and muttered, "don't know what to write about yet. "His teacher just smiled. Before anything else was said, his face lit up, and his pencil started moving as he wrote "A book. "Then he stopped and read over what he had written, whispering the words "a book. "Next he started laboriously working on writing the sounds and letters he heard in the word" about, ''coming back again and again to portions of the word to vocalize the next sound and write down his representation of what he had said. He paused again to read …

The Development Of Sense Of Humor As A Characteristic Of Giftedness In Young Children, Jill M. Uhlenberg Jan 1990

The Development Of Sense Of Humor As A Characteristic Of Giftedness In Young Children, Jill M. Uhlenberg

Graduate Research Papers

The definition of "humor" and "sense of humor" has changed drastically since the Roman Empire. At some points in history, having a sense of humor was a positive aspect of life, and at other times, humor was considered unnecessary and undesirable. The word "humor" comes from a Latin word, "humor" which means "moisture." The term referred to the fluids of the body: blood, phlegm, choler (yellow bile), and melancholy (black bile) (Cornett, 1986; Weaver & Cotrell, 1987). Variant mixtures of these fluids (humours) was said to determine an individual's temperament. If the proper balance was evident, a person was in …

Developing A Literature-Based Theme Study To Extend The Whole Language Concept, Sue L. Pettit Jan 1990

Developing A Literature-Based Theme Study To Extend The Whole Language Concept, Sue L. Pettit

Graduate Research Papers

Language is a process through which humans create meaning. Language as a process begins with a function and then develops as the user experiments with the language form necessary to meet the needs of that function. Students use language and learn its functions at the same time (F. Smith, 1983). As a result, children learn language naturally as they interact with others in their environment (Goodman, 1986).

The Medium, The Message, And The Supreme Court: An Analysis Of Supreme Court Opinions In Obscenity Cases, Jerry M. Goldberg Jan 1990

The Medium, The Message, And The Supreme Court: An Analysis Of Supreme Court Opinions In Obscenity Cases, Jerry M. Goldberg

Iowa Journal of Communication

The relationship between the various media of communication and the culture in which they operate is of major interest to mass communication scholars. Marshall McLuhan, the "media guru" of the 60s, was among the most controversial people to explore this relationship. Daniel Czitrom, while generally critical of McLuhan's theories and scholarship, recognizes the scope of McLuhan's influence. Czitrom writes:

McLuhan's analysis of modern media has profoundly transformed our perceptions of twentieth-century life, particularly for the generation born after World War II. When the French coined the term mcluhanisme, they were referring not only to the man but also to a …

In the fall of 1990, 160 questionnaires were delivered to wait staff at eight 24-hour, full menu/table service restaurants in the Waterloo/Cedar Falls area. The instrument was designed to obtain data concerning nutrition knowledge, and elicit the selected demographic information. The information received …

Language And Identity In Sophie’S Choice, Elizabeth Ruth Bingham Jan 1990

Language And Identity In Sophie’S Choice, Elizabeth Ruth Bingham

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Sophie Zawistowska, the title character in William Styron's novel Sophie's Choice, has a severe identity problem. She acts as dutiful daughter, unfulfilled spouse, desperate mother, impassioned lover, tragic victim, unquestioning accomplice, and guilt-consumed survivor. Many of these characterizations conflict directly with each other. Sophie also speaks six languages and identifies at various times with speakers of German, Polish, French, Russian, English, and Yiddish, language groups that often conflict, as well. Although Sophie has various identities, she doesn't have a unified sense of self. Her native land, Poland, with which she might identify, has an identity crisis of its own, as …

Undergraduate Elementary Education Students’ Concepts Of Light, Deborah Lynn Orr Jan 1990

Undergraduate Elementary Education Students’ Concepts Of Light, Deborah Lynn Orr

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

The purpose of the study was to describe some ideas that future elementary school teachers have about light and shadows. Twenty-five freshmen and sophomores in elementary education were interviewed using the Interview-About-Instances technique developed by Osborne and Gilbert. Students were asked to explain specific instances of sources and non-sources of light, the distance light travels, and the role of light in vision. Students defined the word "shadow" and predicted where shadows could be in particular situations. The results of this study indicate that many students lack factual information or have misconceptions concerning light propagation. Fifty-six percent of the students in …

Survey Of Public Profiles, Attendance, And Preferences For Cedar Falls/Waterloo Community Leisure And Arts Activities, Steven Michael Wikert

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Community administrators who plan leisure and arts activities for the public, many times lack adequate information to base important decisions upon. Therefore, possessing the knowledge and techniques needed to gain this information becomes of vital importance to both profit and non-profit agencies.

Some questions that might arise for administrators when trying to develop programs, schedules, or facilities include: What are the characteristics of attenders and nonattenders? What are the most effective publicity methods for outreach? What programs need to be retained or initiated? What community leisure and arts events does the public prefer? How does local attendance at cultural events …

An Investigation Of The Relationship Between A Program For Teaching Thinking Skills And Science Test Scores, Craig M. Hemmen

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

There has been limited research which specifically explores the effects of science achievement when teaching thinking skills in isolation to upper elementary students. There are many components of thinking skills; however, the present study deals specifically with the student responsibility aspect of thinking skills. Subjects are fifth- and sixth-grade science students enrolled in a small rural Midwestern school district. Students were divided into classes by the principal. There was an effort to equalize both classes academically. The student responsibility section of a thinking skills program, devised by the Area Education Agency 7, was used. A 2-week period at the beginning …

The Use Of Microcomputers In Language Arts In Elementary Classrooms, Diane Lovstuen

Graduate Research Papers

In 1983 Time magazine named the computer its "Machine of the Year," and declared, "The 'information revolution' that futurists have long predicted has arrived, bringing with it the promise of dramatic changes in the way people live and work, and perhaps even in the way they think. America will never be the same" {"Computer Moves In," 1983, p. 14). Computers are now standard equipment in the majority of schools. Collis (1988) reports on a 1986 survey that showed 85 percent of the elementary schools, 95 percent of the junior high schools, and 97 percent of the senior high schools in …

Editor's Corner - On The Importance Of High School Biology: A Note From The Assistant Editor For Biology, Norris M. Durham

Iowa Science Teachers Journal

Biology is life: human life, animal life, plant life, protozoan life. Its importance should never be underestimated! Why, then, are there so many students entering my university courses with no knowledge of high school biology whatsoever? It is unthinkable that a person can complete high school without having had a course in the life science.

The Etiology Of Domestic Violence Against Women: A Theoretical Overview, Andrea Athey Jan 1989

The Etiology Of Domestic Violence Against Women: A Theoretical Overview, Andrea Athey

Graduate Research Papers

Historically, a man's right to control his mate through violence has been legally and culturally sanctioned. The expression "rule of thumb" originates in ancient Rome and refers to the common law practice which allowed a man to strike his wife with a stick provided the stick was no thicker than his thumb (Gelles , 1987) .

Plant-Parasitic Nematodes In Iowa, Don C. Norton Jan 1989

Plant-Parasitic Nematodes In Iowa, Don C. Norton

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS

Ninety-nine species of plant-parasitic nematodes are recorded from Iowa. Twenty-seven are new state records. Most samples were collected from around maize or from prairies or woodlands. Similarity (Sorensen's index) of species was highest for the maize-prairie habitats (0.49), compared with maize-woodlands (0. 23), or prairie-woodland (0. 3 7) habitats. Nematode communities were most diverse in prairies with a Shannon-Weiner index (H') of 2.74, compared with 1.65 and 1.07 for woodlands and maize habitats, respectively. Evenness of species (J') was 0.41, 0.78, and 0.48 for maize, prairies, and woodlands, respectively.
