Community, History, And Individual Wholeness In The Novels Of Toni Morrison: Recasting The Myth Of Self, Richard L. Campbell
Community, History, And Individual Wholeness In The Novels Of Toni Morrison: Recasting The Myth Of Self, Richard L. Campbell
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The wholeness of the fictional characters of Toni Morrison is linked with their relationship to historical and communal values. Those characters who move toward a feeling of authenticity or psychological completeness are those who realize the value of the past to their present existence and the importance of significant relationships with those around them. Characters who are distanced from these values, however, are unable to realize a sense of wholeness. Though no character in The Bluest Eye achieves authenticity, the novel does suggest the values which its characters lack, and which might have allowed them to experience growth. Sula, on …
Nesting Ecology Of The Cooper’S Hawk In Iowa, David John Conrads
Nesting Ecology Of The Cooper’S Hawk In Iowa, David John Conrads
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
The Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperii) was once a common nesting raptor in Iowa. Habitat destruction, pesticides and their residues, and human persecution have recently contributed to the decline of this species throughout its range. It is listed as an endangered species in Iowa by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources. In 1988 and 1989, historic nesting areas were searched for nesting Cooper's Hawks. Areas with birds displaying breeding behavior were also searched for nests. Nests were observed to determine nesting success and productivity. Habitat characteristics were measured for 33 nests found between 1985 and 1989. Macrohabitat and microhabitat were defined …
A Burkean Analysis Of The Offstage Presence In The Plays Of A.R. Gurney, Jr., Mark A. Giesler
A Burkean Analysis Of The Offstage Presence In The Plays Of A.R. Gurney, Jr., Mark A. Giesler
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
WASP playwright A. R. Gurney, Jr. defies the traditional notion of realism with his use of theatrical device. One such recurring device used in his plays is an offstage presence. Critics seem to agree that the onstage action affected by this offstage presence is often contrived. This study offers a response to this critical contention through its examination of the function of the offstage presence in seven of Gurney's full-length plays: Children, The Middle Ages, What I Did Last Summer, The Perfect Party, Another Antigone, Sweet Sue, and The Cocktail Hour. The study's methodology is based on Kenneth Burke's "analysis …
Sociological Implications Of Technology: The Historical Treatment Of Technology In Sociological Theory And A Proposal For Empirical Research, Martin E. Hansen
Sociological Implications Of Technology: The Historical Treatment Of Technology In Sociological Theory And A Proposal For Empirical Research, Martin E. Hansen
Dissertations and Theses @ UNI
Technology, as a form of knowledge, can be an important explanatory variable in empirical sociological investigations. In this thesis the macrohistorical concept of technology within the discipline of sociology is traced and critiqued, with special attention given to analytical misconceptions and reifications, e.g., confusing technology with its processes, products, and social consequences. An analytical model is initially presented which attempts to facilitate a better understanding of the dialectical interrelationships between technological, social, and natural (scientific) phenomena. Recent attempts to measure the effects of technology on social relationships are critiqued, particularly in their inadequate conceptualization and operationalization, confusion of cause and …

Recent advances in the study of human origins have increased our understanding of our ancestors. There have been new, major fossil finds. WT 17000, a 2.5 million-year-old robust Australopithecus found in Kenya (Walker et al. 1986), led to a revision of early hominid phylogeny (Delson 1986; 1987). Existing fossil materials have been reassessed. For example, Tattersall (1986) maintains that at least two unrecog- nized hominid species (Homo neanderthalensis, H. hei delbergensis and possibly H. steinheimensis ) existed be tween the times of H . erectus and fully modern H . sapiens.

Technology Available To Iowa Teachers Through Area Education Agencies, Jack A. Gerlovich, Paul Joslin
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
Recently, we have, as a nation, come to realize the vital need for technology literacy among our citizens if we are to cope in a global society. Iowa educational leaders are striving to gain a competitive edge m this area. Working for this edge, the Iowa Department of Education has hired a technology consultant, and guides are being refined to help educators address the topic in their curricula. Standards have been adopted by the State Board of Education relative to telecommunications in Iowa classrooms.

Bug Zoo, Martha Voyles, Deborah Charnetski
Bug Zoo, Martha Voyles, Deborah Charnetski
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
We envisioned a conversation something like this taking place at the dinner table of one of our students who had read a chapter on animal habitats that day in school. This imaginary conversation was the impetus for the idea of a classroom "bug zoo." Our goal was to supplement the school district's curriculum with activities that emphasized science process skills and promoted the enjoyment of science and scientific activity. Because we felt that the skills necessary for reading nonfiction are a critical aspect of science instruction, we were committed to using our district's text. We hoped our project would help …

Science Notes - Statement Of The Position Of The Iowa Academy Of Science On The Issue Of Animal Rights
Iowa Science Teachers Journal
The Iowa Academy of Science strongly opposes the attempts, made in the guise of "animal rights," to abolish the use of animals as scientific research and teaching subjects. Significant success in life science research has been due, in large, to the use of experimental animals. The rationale for such use lies in the fact that their organ systems, metabolic pathways and genetics have counterparts in humans. Therefore, the information gained from such research has been of enormous value to the welfare of humans and other animals.
Bibliography Of The Natural And Cultural History Of The Loess Hills Of Iowa, Dean M. Roosa, Darwin D. Koenig
Bibliography Of The Natural And Cultural History Of The Loess Hills Of Iowa, Dean M. Roosa, Darwin D. Koenig
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
A bibliography of literature on Iowa's Loess Hills includes references containing information on the cultural or natural history of chis western Iowa landform region. The bibliography is divided into six parts: general, archaeological, botanical, geological, historical, and zoological. Annotations are included only where necessary to clarify contents. Because of their rugged topography, the Loess Hills of western Iowa have resisted large-scale conversion to agriculture. This has permitted noteworthy persistence of native prairies and woodlands, along with their associated species. This bibliography complements two special issues of the Proceedings of the Iowa Academy of Science devoted to Iowa's Loess Hills.

The Role Of The Elementary School Counselor In Dealing With Latchkey Children, Bruce C. Gast
The Role Of The Elementary School Counselor In Dealing With Latchkey Children, Bruce C. Gast
Graduate Research Papers
Children's care of themselves in the absence of adult supervision has existed since the industrial revolution and is an important part of current reality. To ensure that 1 keys to houses are not lost, many children, responsible for letting themselves into their homes after school, are required by their parents to wear keys on a chain around their necks. This explains where the term "latchkey" originated and why these kids are called this today. The latchkey problem is not new; it was a concern more than 80 years ago. Stroman and Duff (1982) reported that the theme of the 1943 …
Safe Tines Of The Narrative Paradigm: Bringing Up The Beginning Critic, Jill I. Tyler
Safe Tines Of The Narrative Paradigm: Bringing Up The Beginning Critic, Jill I. Tyler
Iowa Journal of Communication
When a young child begins to learn to eat with utensils, the careful teacher supplies the youngster with blunt, flexible forks (safe tines) with which to practice the tasks of capturing, transporting and depositing food. These tools allow the learning child to work independently, creatively and safely, providing a means for nourishment while minimizing the danger of injury.
The careful teacher of rhetorical criticism will also find safe tines useful. In this case, "safe tines" refer to flexible critical constructs with which the learner may practice the tasks of interpreting, evaluating and responding to discourse. These tools allow the learner …
Book Review: Fragile Giants: A Natural History Of The Loess Hills, Kenneth D. Carlander
Book Review: Fragile Giants: A Natural History Of The Loess Hills, Kenneth D. Carlander
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The Loess Hills, which are a special feature of the eastern bank of the Missouri River in Iowa and northern Missouri, have been cited by Dean Roosa, Iowa's State Ecologist, as a "world treasure and ... our best-kept secret." These Hills are mounds of finely ground soil, "glacial flour," deposited by dust storms after the glaciers receded 31 to 12 thousand years ago. Loess is rather widely distributed in Iowa, but the extensive deposits (often over 200 feet deep) on and against the eastern wall of the valley left a rolling, wave-like, terrain which on erosion leaves vertical banks of …
The Cladocera Of Lake West Okoboji, Iowa - Revisited, Kenneth L. Lang
The Cladocera Of Lake West Okoboji, Iowa - Revisited, Kenneth L. Lang
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Seven stations, established in 1968 to sample Cladocera, were sampled again, using the same methods, in 1988. Seven species, all of them in low abundance, are new records for Lake West Okoboji. In 1988, there was little difference 1) in the ranking of the stations relative to abundance of cladocerans, 2) the distribution and abundance of the species by habitat-type, 3) the seasonality of the predominant species in the specific habitats, 4) the temporal patterns of the number of species and total cladoceran abundance in the specific habitats, compared to 1968. On the average there were more species but lower …

"Honor The Warrior Not The War": Who Are The Warriors Of The Vietnam War?: A Seven-Week Unit For Eighth Graders, Sue Ellen Savereide
Draftings In
"Honor the warrior not the war" is the slogan of the Vietnam Veterans Against the War, hence the title of this unit which intends neither to honor nor dishonor the Vietnam War - i.e., to assess per se its rightness or wrongfulness. That sort of investigation may be within the scope of a social studies unit. The intent of this language arts unit is to honor the warriors of that war. Focusing on those who fought in the war and exploring the question "Who Are the Warriors of the Vietnam War?" leads adolescents to a major discovery – i.e., that …
