One of the things that makes this world such a wonderful place is the variety of living things. There are thousands and thousands kinds of plants and animals. Some are so tiny we cannot see them without a magnifying glass. Some are bigger than elephants. Some, like parrots, have bright colors. Some, like orchids, have very strange shapes. Some, like people, come in different sizes, shapes and colors and do very interesting things. There are many differences in all these living things and we call this "diversity."

The Early History And Recent Trends In Iowa Herpetology, Reeve M. Bailey, James L. Christiansen
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Herpetological exploration of Iowa began in 1823 with Long's expedition to the Rocky Mountains. From that time until an 1892 publication by Osborn based on Iowa specimens, herpetological research in the state was minor and incidental. Several significant reports appeared after that date involving analysis of Iowa specimens and from 1938 to 1944 a major base-line collection of the amphibians and reptiles of Iowa was established. Studies after that time have added a few species to Iowa’s known herpetofauna but recently have concentrated not only on composition of the fauna and distribution, but emphasized population changes, ecological relationships, and better …

My father has been a major influence to me in seeking the duty role of a principalship. I have many memories of my father's role as principal through all stages of my life. It is interesting to reflect on my thoughts and perceptions of the principalship as I have grown from a small child to a young adult. When I was very young, my father's school was the place we went to on Saturday. We would play in the halls, find the rooms with fish, animals and other interesting displays, and the big highlight was drinking a carton of milk …
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome And The Role Of The School Counselor, Martha J. Devault
Fetal Alcohol Syndrome And The Role Of The School Counselor, Martha J. Devault
Graduate Research Papers
Concern over the consumption of alcohol and pregnancy have existed since the beginning of time. Reaching as far back as the Biblical era, women have been warned about the potential dangers and lasting effects of mixing alcohol and pregnancy together (D'Entremont, 1990). Despite unpublished 19th and 20th century scientific observations clearly describing the effects of alcohol on newborn babies and developing children, it has not been until the last 20 years that these problems have been given official recognition and labeled by the health and medical professions as Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, or FAS. As recently as 1973, alcohol was still …

An Assessment Of Cellular Manufacturing, Bruce A. Thurm
An Assessment Of Cellular Manufacturing, Bruce A. Thurm
Graduate Research Papers
The problem of this study was to explain the process of cellular manufacturing and identify the key elements to help manufacturers improve the efficiency and productivity of their operations and improve the quality of their products. The study focused on the key issues of cellular manufacturing, and the design, implementation, and control of cellular manufacturing work cells. The study included the potential benefits of cellular manufacturing, as explained by Overbeeke (1988) including reduced lot sizes, reduced throughput time, greater flexibility, reduced inventory, improved quality, improved scheduling, and reduced material handling. Job enrichment, a less quantifiable potential benefit of cellular manufacturing, …
A Marriage And Family Of Sorts, Kenneth P. Petersen
A Marriage And Family Of Sorts, Kenneth P. Petersen
Institute for Educational Leadership Monograph Series
Relationships between people in all walks of life present a fascinating and challenging issue for discussion and even friendly, though perhaps rather heated, debate. As a young person, my philosophy about human relationships relied heavily upon an aggressive approach with much talking and little listening. Needless to say, I'm certain I probably did win a few battles but lost most of the wars. Diplomacy was not in my vocabulary. I have since learned, in my more seasoned years, that maintaining and developing relationships, for any purpose, requires an arsenal of many and varied techniques. I'm also very certain that my …

Habitat And Distribution Of Plants Special To Iowa's Driftless Area, William P. Pusateri, Dean M. Roosa, Donald R. Farrar
Habitat And Distribution Of Plants Special To Iowa's Driftless Area, William P. Pusateri, Dean M. Roosa, Donald R. Farrar
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
A portion of the Upper Midwest escaped glaciation during the two most recent glacial epochs. This "Driftless Area", also known in Iowa as the "Paleozoic Plateau", comprises some 39,000 square kilometers (15,000 square miles) in the states of Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Today the highly dissected terrain provides a variety of habitats supporting a rich and diverse flora including many plants special to the area, i.e., principally, in Iowa, restricted to the Driftless Area. These special plants have received much attention, often having been discussed as possible relicts from past floras. However, distribution data for these species beyond the …

Outcome-Based Education: A Description And Indirect Analysis, Mary L. Jensen

The Des Moines Register headlines proclaimed "Outcome-based education; State's effort at reform under fire as stressing attitude" (March 22, 1993, p. 3A). The Iowa Farm Bureau Spokesman announced ·outcome Based Education--a controversy· (April 10, 1993). Education Week described a bitter fight over school funding in Pennsylvania, with the news that "Pennsylvania House Votes to Nullify State Board's LearnerOutcome Rules· (February 17, 1993, p. 19). The Program News bulletin of the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development advertised its version of the Outcome-Based Education videotape series, devoting its whole May, 1993, issue to promotion of outcome-based strategies.

Range Expansion Of The Great-Tailed Grackle In The 1900s, James J. Dinsmore, Stephen J. Dinsmore
Range Expansion Of The Great-Tailed Grackle In The 1900s, James J. Dinsmore, Stephen J. Dinsmore
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
In 1900, the range of the Great-tailed Grackle extended north of the Mexican border only into Texas. Since then, it has expanded its range greatly. It now nests in 14 states and has strayed to an additional eight states and three Canadian provinces. Much of this expansion has occurred since 1960. Great-tails often stray far from their normal range, especially in spring. Most of these strays are single individuals. In states where they have nested, breeding birds typically reach the state a few years after the first reports of the species. Great-tailed Grackles do well in a variety of human …

Group Art Therapy In School Counseling, Janet G. Soldwish
Group Art Therapy In School Counseling, Janet G. Soldwish
Graduate Research Papers
Art helps children develop more intentional action, more awareness of who they are, more sensitivity in how they affect others, and more responsibility for their actions (McNiff, 1988). Children meet some of their needs for expression and self-definition through the manipulation of art materials and their development of the creative process (Congdon, 1990; Rubin, 1984). The universality of art and its ability to relate one human to another through the visual form is important for children (Ryder, 1987).
The Gifted/Learning Disabled Student: A Contradiction In The Classroom, Caroline M. Bredekamp
The Gifted/Learning Disabled Student: A Contradiction In The Classroom, Caroline M. Bredekamp
Graduate Research Papers
The following study is a review of current literature concerning identification processes, as well as a delineation of appropriate learning strategies for gifted/learning disabled students. The analysis continues with an examination of the needs of a potentially gifted/learning disabled student. Throughout his academic career, the subject of this analysis experienced difficulties in school. Despite his high intelligence, he did not achieve academically according to either grade level testing or batteries measuring personal aptitude. The resulting combination of the review of literature and the student analysis produces, from the viewpoint of best recommended practice, suggested strategies for educators teaching paradoxical learners. …
