Cardiac time intervals are important hemodynamic indices and provide information about left ventricular performance. Phonocardiography (PCG), impedance cardiography (ICG), and recently, seismocardiography (SCG) have been unobtrusive methods of choice for detection of cardiac time intervals and have potentials to be integrated into wearable devices. The main purpose of this study was to investigate the accuracy and precision of beat-to-beat extraction of cardiac timings from the PCG, ICG and SCG recordings in comparison to multimodal echocardiography (Doppler, TDI, and M-mode) as the gold clinical standard. Recordings were obtained from 86 healthy adults and in total 2,120 cardiac cycles were analyzed. For …

A Comparison Of Drone Imagery And Ground-Based Methods For Estimating The Extent Of Habitat Destruction By Lesser Snow Geese (Anser Caerulescens Caerulescens) In La Pérouse Bay, Andrew Barnas, Brian J. Darby, Gregory S. Vandeberg, Robert F. Rockwell, Susan N. Ellis-Felege

Biology Faculty Publications

Lesser snow goose (Anser caerulescens caerulescens) populations have dramatically altered vegetation communities through increased foraging pressure. In remote regions, regular habitat assessments are logistically challenging and time consuming. Drones are increasingly being used by ecologists to conduct habitat assessments, but reliance on georeferenced data as ground truth may not always be feasible. We estimated goose habitat degradation using photointerpretation of drone imagery and compared estimates to those made with ground-based linear transects. In July 2016, we surveyed five study plots in La Pérouse Bay, Manitoba, to evaluate the effectiveness of a fixed-wing drone with simple Red Green Blue …

Improving Student Attitudes Toward Discussion Boards Using A Brief Motivational Intervention, Virginia Clinton, Alison E. Kelly Aug 2019

Improving Student Attitudes Toward Discussion Boards Using A Brief Motivational Intervention, Virginia Clinton, Alison E. Kelly

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

Discussion boards are tools to afford student interaction and engagement in online courses, but students often have negative attitudes toward discussion boards. The purpose of this study was to determine whether an intervention informing students of the usefulness of online discussion boards affected their attitudes toward discussion boards. The instructor randomly assigned students (N = 65) to view a video and answer an essay question on either the benefits of discussion boards (treatment) or how discussion boards were graded (control). Students in the treatment condition indicated discussion boards as being more useful than did students in the control condition, p …

Modification Of Vertical Earth Pressure Formulas For High Fill Cut-And-Cover Tunnels Experimental And Numerical Methods, Sheng Li, Li Ma, I-Hsuan Ho, Qicai Wang, Bentian Yu, Peng Zhou Jul 2019

Modification Of Vertical Earth Pressure Formulas For High Fill Cut-And-Cover Tunnels Experimental And Numerical Methods, Sheng Li, Li Ma, I-Hsuan Ho, Qicai Wang, Bentian Yu, Peng Zhou

Geology and Geological Engineering Faculty Publications

Te high-flled cut-and-cover tunnel (HFCCT) is a solution to reclaim more useable lands due to the unique landforms of Loess Plateau in northwestern China. Because of the ultrahigh backfll, the estimation of vertical earth pressure will signifcantly afect the design and safety of the cut-and-cover tunnel (CCT). Te current methods for estimating the vertical earth pressure are either to overestimate or underestimate the vertical earth pressure on the top of HFCCT. To more precisely estimate the vertical earth pressure distribution, the vertical earth pressure based on the soil column pressure, h (h: the height of backfll above the CCT), needs …

Relationship Between Ischemic Stroke And Pulse Rate Variability As A Surrogate Of Heart Rate Variability, Ajay K. Verma, Parshuram M. Aarotale, Parastoo Dehkordi, Jau-Shin Lou, Kouhyar Tavakolian Jul 2019

Relationship Between Ischemic Stroke And Pulse Rate Variability As A Surrogate Of Heart Rate Variability, Ajay K. Verma, Parshuram M. Aarotale, Parastoo Dehkordi, Jau-Shin Lou, Kouhyar Tavakolian

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

Autonomic reflex ascertains cardiovascular homeostasis during standing. Impaired autonomic reflex could lead to dizziness and falls while standing; this is prevalent in stroke survivors. Pulse rate variability (PRV) has been utilized in the literature in lieu of heart rate variability (HRV) for ambulatory and portable monitoring of autonomic reflex predominantly in young, healthy individuals. Here, we compared the PRV with gold standard HRV for monitoring autonomic reflex in ischemic stroke survivors. Continuous blood pressure and electrocardiography were acquired from ischemic stroke survivors (64 ± 1 years) and age-matched controls (65 ± 2 years) during a 10-minute sit-to-stand test. Beat-by-beat heart …

Statistical Optimization Of Stress Level In Mg-Li-Al Alloys Upon Hot Compression Testing, Rezawana Islam, Meysem Haghshenas Jun 2019

Statistical Optimization Of Stress Level In Mg-Li-Al Alloys Upon Hot Compression Testing, Rezawana Islam, Meysem Haghshenas

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

In the present study, a response optimization method using Extreme Vertices Mixer Design (EVMD) approach is proposed for stress optimization in a thermomechanically processed Mg-Li-Al alloy. Experimentation was planned as per mixed design proportions of Mg, Li and Al and process variables (i.e. temperature and strain rate). Each experiment has been performed under different conditions of factors proportions and process variables. The response, particularly stress has been considered for each experiment. The response is optimized to find an optimum condition when the contributing factors influence material characteristics in such a way, to achieve better strength, ductility and corrosion resistance. Estimated …

Teaching, Leadership & Professional Practice Faculty Publications

Surveying is a common methodology in science education research, including cross-national and cross-cultural comparisons. The literature surrounding students’ attitudes toward science, in particular, illustrates the prevalence of efforts to translate instruments with the eventual goal of comparing groups. This paper utilizes survey data from a nationally representative cross-sectional study of Qatari students in grades 3 through 12 to frame a discussion around the adequacy and extent to which common adaptations allow comparisons to be made among linguistically or culturally different respondents. The analytic sample contained 2,615 students who responded to a previously validated 32-item instrument, 1,704 of whom completed the …

The Regulatory Control Of Cebpa Enhancers And Silencers In The Myeloid And Red-Blood Cell Lineages, Andrea Repele, Shawn Krueger, Tapas Bhattacharyya, Michelle Y. Tuineau, Manu Jun 2019

The Regulatory Control Of Cebpa Enhancers And Silencers In The Myeloid And Red-Blood Cell Lineages, Andrea Repele, Shawn Krueger, Tapas Bhattacharyya, Michelle Y. Tuineau, Manu

Biology Faculty Publications

Cebpa encodes a transcription factor (TF) that plays an instructive role in the development of multiple myeloid lineages. The expression of Cebpa itself is finely modulated, as Cebpa is expressed at high and intermediate levels in neutrophils and macrophages respectively and downregulated in non-myeloid lineages. The cis-regulatory logic underlying the lineage-specific modulation of Cebpa’s expression level is yet to be fully characterized. Previously, we had identified 6 new cis-regulatory modules (CRMs) in a 78kb region surrounding Cebpa. We had also inferred the TFs that regulate each CRM by fitting a sequence-based thermodynamic model to a comprehensive …
