Parameterizing Wave‐Driven Vertical Constituent Transport In The Upper Atmosphere, Chester S. Gardner, Yafang Guo, Alan Z. Liu May 2019

Parameterizing Wave‐Driven Vertical Constituent Transport In The Upper Atmosphere, Chester S. Gardner, Yafang Guo, Alan Z. Liu

Atmospheric Sciences Faculty Publications

Dissipating waves contribute to vertical mixing of the atmosphere, alter molecular and eddy diffusion, and induce chemical transport of reactive species. These processes induce strong vertical transport of atmospheric constituents in regions where wave dissipation is significant. The effective wave diffusivity is proportional to the Stokes drift velocity imparted by the spectrum of vertically propagating waves, which is related to the vertical heat and wave energy fluxes. Because the heat flux cannot be derived from wave parameterization schemes employed in most atmospheric models, wave‐driven constituent transport has not been fully incorporated. However, we show in this paper that wave diffusivity …

Effects Of Acid Hydrolysis Waste Liquid Recycle On Preparation Of Microcrystalline Cellulose, Huijuan Xiu, Rui Cheng, Jinbao Li, Feiyan Ma, Te Song, Xue Yang, Pan Feng, Xuefei Zhang, Evguenii Kozliak, Yun Ji May 2019

Effects Of Acid Hydrolysis Waste Liquid Recycle On Preparation Of Microcrystalline Cellulose, Huijuan Xiu, Rui Cheng, Jinbao Li, Feiyan Ma, Te Song, Xue Yang, Pan Feng, Xuefei Zhang, Evguenii Kozliak, Yun Ji

Chemistry Faculty Publications

Large amounts of acidic waste are produced on the industrial scale during hydrolysis of partially amorphous cellulose to produce microcrystalline cellulose (MCC). The essential disposal and treatment of this highly acidic liquid wastes the acid feedstock and increases the production cost. To maximize the use of acid without sacrificing the MCC product quality, this project reports a successful attempt to recycle the acid hydrolysis waste liquid, focusing on the impact of waste recycling on MCC morphology and reducing sugar in the hydrolysate. The results showed that when the waste liquid is recycled 1-5 times, no metal accumulation occurred while cellulose …

Benchmarking Image Processing Algorithms For Unmanned Aerial System-Assisted Crack Detection In Concrete Structures, Sattar Dorafshan, Robert J. Thomas, Marc Maguire

Civil Engineering Faculty Publications

This paper summarizes the results of traditional image processing algorithms for detection of defects in concrete using images taken by Unmanned Aerial Systems (UASs). Such algorithms are useful for improving the accuracy of crack detection during autonomous inspection of bridges and other structures, and they have yet to be compared and evaluated on a dataset of concrete images taken by UAS. The authors created a generic image processing algorithm for crack detection, which included the major steps of filter design, edge detection, image enhancement, and segmentation, designed to uniformly compare different edge detectors. Edge detection was carried out by six …

Investigation Of Properties Alternation During Super-Critical Co2 Injection In Shale, Sai Wang, Kouqi Liu, Juan Han, Kegang Ling, Hongsheng Wang, Bao Jia

Petroleum Engineering Faculty Publications

The low recovery of oil from tight liquid-rich formations is still a major challenge for a tight reservoir. Thus, supercritical CO2 flooding was proposed as an immense potential recovery method for production improvement. While up to date, there have been few studies to account for the formation properties' variation during the CO2 Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) process, especially investigation at the micro-scale. This work conducted a series of measurements to evaluate the rock mechanical change, mineral alteration and the pore structure properties' variation through the supercritical CO2 (Sc-CO2) injection process. Corresponding to the time variation (0 days, 10 days, 20 …

Magnesium Nanocomposites: An Overview On Time-Dependent Plastic (Creep) Deformation, Meysem Haghshenas, Manoj Gupta Apr 2019

Magnesium Nanocomposites: An Overview On Time-Dependent Plastic (Creep) Deformation, Meysem Haghshenas, Manoj Gupta

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Magnesium (Mg) nanocomposites are created when nano-size particles are embedded into the Mg (or Mg alloy) matrix. The Mg nanocomposites, cited as high-strength energy-saving materials of future, are a group of emerging materials with excellent combination of strength and ductility and superior specific strength property (strength-to-weight ratio). Having said this, Mg nanocomposites are considered as promising replacement for other structural alloys (i.e. aluminum and titanium) wherever low density and high strength are required, i.e. transportation, aerospace, defense, etc. To be able to apply this group of materials for real components, different failure mechanisms at ambient and elevated temperatures under …

Monitoring And Modeling The Effect Of Agricultural Drainage And Recent Channel Incision On Adjacent Ground Water-Dependent Ecosystems, Philip J. Gerla Apr 2019

Monitoring And Modeling The Effect Of Agricultural Drainage And Recent Channel Incision On Adjacent Ground Water-Dependent Ecosystems, Philip J. Gerla

Geology and Geological Engineering Faculty Publications

Channel incision isolates flood plains, disrupts sediment transport, and degrades riparian ecology. Reactivation and periodicity of incision may affect the water table and hydrological conditions far beyond the stream margin. Long-term incision and its recent acceleration along Iron Springs Creek, North Dakota, USA, has affected adjacent ecosystems. An agricultural surface drain empties directly into the original spring-fed source of the creek, which triggered channel erosion both up- and downstream. Historical maps, recent LiDAR, and field surveying were used to characterize incision since ditch excavation in 1911. Although the soils are sandy, small hydrological gradients impede natural drainage in the surrounding …

Biology Faculty Publications

Museum specimens play an increasingly important role in predicting the outcomes and revealing the consequences of anthropogenically driven disruption of the biosphere. As ecological communities respond to ongoing environmental change, host–parasite interactions are also altered. This shifting landscape of host–parasite associations creates opportunities for colonization of different hosts and emergence of new pathogens, with implications for wildlife conservation and management, public health, and other societal concerns. Integrated archives that document and preserve mammal specimens along with their communities of associated parasites and ancillary data provide a powerful resource for investigating, anticipating, and mitigating the epidemiological, ecological, and evolutionary impacts of …

Reading The Landscape In Antler, North Dakota: Repeat Photography In An Atrophying Northern Plains Town, William A. Wetherholt, Gregory S. Vandeberg

Geography & Geographic Information Science Faculty Publications

This study presents repeat photography as an effective method to construct a narrative of change for a cultural landscape. The technique of repeat photography is the process of revisiting the vantage point of a historic photograph and capturing a contemporary image. This chapter focuses on the town of Antler, North Dakota, which has lost more than 85% of its population in the last 50 years (the 2016 estimated population was 25). Repeat photography with eleven historic photographs in Antler began to uncover a story of abandonment and change over the last century. It is this telling of a story through …
