Biochar As A Filler In Mixed Matrix Materials: Synthesis, Characterization, And Applications, Jeremy Lewis, Mark Miller, Jake Crumb, Maram A. Q. Al-Sayaghi, Chris Buelke, Austin Tesser, Ali Alshami

The use of mixed-matrix materials (MMM) has become a major topic of research in recent years, due to unique properties achieved in these composites. In this work, biochar from sunflower seed hull pyrolysis and biochar/polysulfone (PSF) MMMs were produced and characterized. The optimal pyrolysis temperature for biochar production was determined to be 500 °C. The resulting biochar properties were an iodine number of 203 mg/g and a pore volume of 0.595 mL/g. In MMM fabrication, the use 4% ethanol as nonsolvent in the wet phase inversion process increased the glass transition temperature by 8 °C, indicating improved biochar/PSF interaction. The …

Use Of Local Plants For Ecological Restoration And Slope Stability: A Possible Application In Yan'an, Loess Plateau, China, Rui Xu, Xunchang Li, Wei Yang, Chao Jiang, Minou Rabiei
Petroleum Engineering Faculty Publications
This paper aimed to screen the potential species suitable for ecological restoration and slope stability from local natural growing plants in China Loess Plateau under a semiarid climate. As part of the field investigations of local natural growing plants, potential species, which are suitable candidates for ecological restoration and slope stability, were nominated in the hilly-gullied region in the Yan’an area. The results showed that Artemisia spp. is the best candidate to form a stable root-soil composite system to support the loose loess and reinforce the loose soil, particularly suitable as pioneer plant in the initial stage of loess slope …

Use Of Hyperspectral Remote Sensing To Estimate Water Quality, Mbongowo J. Mbuh
Use Of Hyperspectral Remote Sensing To Estimate Water Quality, Mbongowo J. Mbuh
Geography & Geographic Information Science Faculty Publications
Approximating and forecasting water variables like phosphorus, nitrogen, chlorophyll, dissolved organic matter, and turbidity are of supreme importance due to their strong influence on water resource quality. This chapter is aimed at showing the practicability of merging water quality observations from remote sensing with water quality modeling for efficient and effective monitoring of water quality. We examine the spatial dynamics of water quality with hyperspectral remote sensing and present approaches that can be used to estimate water quality using hyperspectral images. The methods presented here have been embraced because the bluegreen and green algae peak wavelengths reflectance are close together …
Developing Cooperation, Eliciting Information, And Assessing Credibility In Criminal And Intelligence Interviews: An Evidence-Based Perspective, Christian A. Meissner
Developing Cooperation, Eliciting Information, And Assessing Credibility In Criminal And Intelligence Interviews: An Evidence-Based Perspective, Christian A. Meissner
Northern Lights Psychology Conference
The science of effective interviewing, particularly with respect to uncooperative or resistant subjects, has advanced considerably over the past decade. This presentation reviews recent laboratory and field studies evaluating the effectiveness of tactics designed to develop rapport and trust, to elicit accurate information from memory, and to assess credibility in intelligence and criminal interview contexts. The implications of this research for improving the practice of investigative interviewing will be discussed.

Evaluating Graphene Oxide And Holey Graphene Oxide Membrane Performance For Water Purification, Chris Buelke, Ali Alshami, James Casler, Yi Lin, Mike Hickner, Isam H. Aljundi
Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications
Graphene oxide (GO) membranes have demonstrated desirable performance for purifying water, matching or exceeding the ion rejection and water flux properties of reverse osmosis (RO) membranes. Though previous methods (e.g., surface decoration and d-space tuning) have been investigated to improve GO membranes, thermal treatment can induce the formation of holes in GO nanosheets in a controlled manner. The resulting holey-GO (hGO) membranes are hypothesized to have improved water permeability via decreasing the path-length that water molecules must travel through the membrane; specifically, through cross-sheet junctions, which is currently one of the main bottlenecks in other GO membranes. GO and hGO …

The NASA Studies of Emissions and Atmospheric Composition, Clouds and Climate Coupling by Regional Surveys (SEAC4RS) project included goals related to aerosol particle life cycle in convective regimes. Using the University of Wisconsin High Spectral Resolution Lidar system at Huntsville, Alabama, USA, and the NASA DC-8 research aircraft, we investigate the altitude dependence of aerosol, water vapor and Altocumulus (Ac) properties in the free troposphere from a canonical 12 August 2013 convective storm case as a segue to a presentation of a mission-wide analysis. It stands to reason that any moisture detrainment from convection must have an associated aerosol layer. …

A Test-Bed For Measuring Uas Servo Reliability, Abdelrahman Elsaid, Daniel Kwasi Adjekum, John Nordlie, Fatima El Jamiy
Aviation Faculty Publications
Extant literature suggests minimal research on the reliability of Commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) components used in fabricating non-military Unmanned Aerial System (UAS). Stochastic failures of components during operational cycles over time poses a safety hazard to flight operations. The purpose of the study was to critically assess the operational performance standards (reliability) of a laboratory designed UAS component test-bed operated using real-world data collected from a Boeing Scan Eagle® UAS aileron servo unit via a flight data recorder. The study hypothesized that the test-bed’s reliability, in terms of a measured encoder output of commanded servo positions, will not be significantly …

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the most common cause of death globally. Patients with suspected CAD are usually assessed by exercise electrocardiography (ECG). Subsequent tests, such as coronary angiography and coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) are performed to localize the stenosis and to estimate the degree of blockage. The present study describes a non-invasive methodology to identify patients with CAD based on the analysis of both rest and exercise seismocardiography (SCG). SCG is a non-invasive technology for capturing the acceleration of the chest induced by myocardial motion and vibrations. SCG signals were recorded from 185 individuals at rest and immediately …

Equipped with precision sensors/antenna modules combined with integrated processing and telemetry circuitry, wireless implants that are both biocompatible and biodegradable are important devices for monitoring patient's conditions and patient's safety. In this article we report on the development, design, and testing of a bio-based monopole radio frequency (RF) sensor/antenna module for potential use in human health applications. The module is built on a dielectric substrate biocomposite made of 0.5:1.0 ratio of polylactic acid (PLA) to sunflower carbon substrate (SCS) produced via pyrolysis of seeds shells. Findings for the SCS include optimized reactor yields around 7.9 wt.% at 500°C, a 0.27:1.0 …
