Winter And Spring Staging Ecology Of Mallards In South Central Nebraska, Dennis Gerald Jorde

Large numbers of mallards (Anas platyrhynchos) winter in or migrate through middle and northern latitudes of the midcontinent region in North America. Although an intensively studied species, the wintering and staging ecology of mallards north of traditional areas has received limited attention, leaving waterfowl administrators with limited information for developing management guidelines for mallard populations during these periods of the year.

Mallard activity patterns, foraging strategy, and physical condition were studied on the Platte River in south central Nebraska from mid-December to early April, 1978-80. Local movements, time budgets, food habits, physiology, and energetics during winter and early spring provided …

The immediate effect of maximal aerobic exertion upon cognition was investigated. It was proposed that a group of trained subjects (n = 12) would perform better on both the pre-and post-cognitive test battery as compared to untrained subjects (n = 10), in which the trained . subjects engaged in an aerobic fitness test between the pre-and and post-test. It was also proposed that the aerobic fitness test would have a differential effect on the cognitive abilities of the two trained subgroups with the aerobic subgroup (n = 7) performing better than the anaerobic subgroup (n = 5) on the post …

Treatability Of Aqueous Gasifier Effluent Using Solvent Extraction, Michael D. Mann

The treatability of aqueous gasifier effluent to reduce the content of soluble organics using solvent extraction as the principal treatment step was investigated. The aqueous gasifier effluent was collected from the spray washer of the Grand Forks Energy Technology Center's slagging fixed-bed gasifier during run RA176.

Raw gasifier effluent is treatable using solvent extraction with n-butyl acetate and isopropyl ether as solvents. A total capital investment of approximately $5,494,800 can be expected for a treatment facility using n-butyl acetate as the extracting solvent, capable of purifying wastewater from a slagging gasifier plant with a large enough capacity to produce 250 …

The Role Of Pioneering Species On The Reclamation Of North Dakota Surface Mined Lands, Louis R. Iverson

Four reclaimed mined areas in western North Dakota ranging in age from one to four years since mining, along with a site from a native mixed grass prairie for comparison, were studied to quantify the early successional changes in floristic composition, soil chemistry and plant chemical composition. The mined sites had been contoured, topsoiled, fertilized, and seeded. However, analysis of the seed bank in topsoil showed that the most dominant colonizers immigrate after topsoiling. Of the 95 species encountered, Kochia scoparia was the most dominant in the first two years following mining. Kochia had relatively low densities 2 in the …

Similarities between personality defects resulting from disruptive, inadequate affective development and problems of extreme extraversion and introversion suggested that developmental ego psychology and object relations theories might be useful in understanding interpersonal functioning in general and how people affiliate in particular. Research on affiliation indicated that extraverts are more affiliative and introverts less affillative, under a condition of high anxiety. A greater predisposition to become anxious (trait anxiety) was also associated with reduced affiliative tendencies under a high anxiety condition. Portugal's foremost keyboardist of the Baroque period was Carlos de Seixas. His music, however, has been overshadowed by that of his eminent contemporary Domenico Scarlatti.

This thesis is an attempt to bring Seixas's music out of obscurity and into the concert hall. It includes biographical material, structural and theoretical analyses that are based on all of his known keyboard works, and guidelines for the performance of the works.

Studies Of The Azasulfonium Functionality: The Cyclization Of Methionine And Other 3-(Amino)Thioethers To Form Isothiazolidinum Salts., Darrell William Swank

The formation and stability of the azasulfonium functionality within the isothiazolidinium structure was investigated. A variety of S- and N-substituted aminothioethers, isothiazolidinium salts and sulfoxides were synthesized, isolated and characterized. Studies of the reaction of a variety of methionine derivatives and analogues with iodine indicated that cyclization occurred when a trimethylene bridge separated the amine and thioether functional groups. The amine could be primary or secondary but could not be in amide linkage and the sulfur could not exist as a sulfoxide or sulfonium salt, but only as a thioether. Significant yields of isothiazolidinium salts were obtained when N-halo compounds …

The purpose of the present study was to examine the relationship between locus of control and psychological well-being for different environmental situations. Two different environments were selected, the military environment as an example of a situation where events are frequently beyond individual control, and the university environment as an example of a situation where individuals have more control over the events in their lives. Internal and external subjects from both environments were compared on psychological well-being, a linear composite of self-concept and anxiety. Electron donor acceptor complexes of the donors biphenylene (BP) and some ferrocenes have been studied by NMR spectroscopy to examine the effects of donor ring currents on acceptor chemical shifts.Equilibrium constants and the differences in chemical shifts between free and complexed acceptor ((DELTA)(,o) values) for the complexes of BP with the acceptors 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene (TNB), 1,4-dinitrobenzene (DNB), N-methylsuccinimide (NMS), tetrafluoro-1,4-benzoquinone (FAN), and 1,4-dicyano-2,3,5,6-tetrafluorobenzene (TFTN) have been obtained by ('1)H and ('19)F NMR spectroscopy. In addition, the crystal and molecular structures of the 1:1 complexes BP-DNB and BP-FAN have been determined by x-ray diffraction. The complexes crystallize in infinite stacks of alternating …

Problem. The purpose of the study was to examine the relationship between sex-role and self-concept for males and females, and to translate the findings into statements about male and female self-concept patterns. The null hypotheses tested were: (1)No relationship exists between sex-role and self-concept for males. (2)No relationship exists between sex-role and self-concept for females. (3)When males and females are compared across sex, sex-role, and sex by sex-role, no differences in self-concept exist.Procedure.
