The Effects Of Desmopressin Acetate (Ddavp) On The Learning Of A Brightness Discrimination In Rats, Deborah Iilene Couk

Sixty male albino rats received DDAVP, a placebo, or control treatment and were tested on a brightness discrimination task. Three groups (DDAVP, placebo, and control) were tested in the morning and three groups were tested in the evening for possible diurnal influences of DDAVP. The acquisition and reversal of the brightness discrimination, along with the retention of the reversal problem after a five- day retention interval were analyzed. Inspection of forward and backward learning curves plotted for each task revealed facilitated acquisition along with an initial impairment of reversal learning in those animals treated with DDAVP. In this study the historical role of the arts in America was briefly traced as well as the history of federal interest in the arts and arts education. The importance of arts education for the individual, the school, and society was stated. Four basic tenets of arts education were derived from research and literature which provided criteria for effective arts activities and strategies. These tenets suggest that arts education (1) should be based on experiential, discovery-based, process-oriented approaches; (2) should be viewed as a developmental activity; (3) should focus on the cognitive, affective, and psychomotor domains of learning; and (4) …

The first section of this dissertation deals with the development of a procedure for the determination of total arsenic in biological samples. Arsine generated from arsenic in dry combusted biological samples was measured by using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer equipped with a graphite furnace. Innovations of the method included the introduction of arsine into the interior of the graphite tube via one internal purge gas port only, the use of three traps to remove water from generated arsine, and the use of Erlenmeyer flasks in the generation of arsine. This study describes the ultrastructure of the amphibian atrium and corroborates light microscopic evidence that atrial myocytes are stimulated to proliferate after ventricular wounding. In addition, the atrial response to a direct injury is described at light and electron microscopic levels.Normal atrial tissue from adult newts was processed for TEM. Fifteen days after ventricular wounding animals were injected with ('3)H-thymidine and atrial tissue was processed for TEM autoradiography. Direct atrial injury (DAI) was achieved by removal of a piece of the atrial wall. DAI animals received a ('3)H-thymidine injection at intervals of 5, 10, 15, 20 and 25 days after …

6 Cubicles is a three act drama that is best labeled a "tragicomedy." The plot revolves around the life of Hilda Stag, an elderly English professor whose obsessive behavior is best typified by her kleptomania and her mania for watching soap operas. Eventually Hilda's bad habits are chosen by her colleagues as the "sins" of the faculty office for which "atonement" must be made. Hilda thus becomes a scapegoat who is "sacrificed" by her officemates by means of a seemingly harmless prank. Suffering a mental breakdown, Hilda fantasizes herself in a religious soap opera but is victimized here as well, …

The research problem is to investigate and analyze perception as an epistemological concept in the writings of Aristotle, using De Anima as the focus for the study.The purpose is to identify and analyze the epistemological premises in Aristotle's theory of perception with particular reference to the intellective process. The Bakken Formation of North Dakota consists of upper and lower, black, organic-rich shales separated by a calcareous siltstone middle member. The formation is a relatively thin unit (maximum thickness of 145 feet) with the lower shale .attaining a maximum thickness of 50 feet and the upper shale a maximum thickness of 23 feet. The shales are hard, siliceous, pyritic, fissile, and noncalcareous. They contain abundant conodonts and tasmanites and have planar laminations accented by pyrite. The upper and lower shales were apparently deposited in an offshore, marine, anoxic environment where anoxic conditions may have been caused by silling of …

Studies of the effects of micromolar concentrations of a variety of di- and trivalent cations on glucokinase and hexokinase activities of rat liver found potent inhibition of both enzymes by Cu('+2) or Cr('+3). As determined by the Dixon and the Cornish-Bowden graphical methods of analysis for enzyme inhibition, Cr('+3) was a mixed inhibitor of glucokinase when either D-glucose or ATP and MgCl(,2) are the substrates varied and Cu('+2) was a competitive inhibitor of gluokinase when D-glucose is the substrate varied.The preference of glucose-6-phosphatase to catalyze glucose-6-P hydrolysis via the glucose-6-P phosphohydrolase reaction was compared to its synthesis via the phosphotransferase …

Parasites Of Fishes From Devils Lake And The Souris River In North Dakota, Jerry D. Reinisch

From 6 September 1976 to 3 July 1977 a total of 596 fish were collected from the Souris River and Devils Lake, North Dakota. These fish, representing six families and seven species, were examined for evidence of parasitism. Invertebrates and abiotic samples also were collected. Water analyses were completed following standard methods. Parasitic infections were confirmed in 87.3% of the total number examined. The Devils Lake collection included 96 fish from the summer season only, whereas those fish collected from the Souris River contained 20 of each dominant species for all seasons. Teacher burnout is a term used to describe teachers' feelings and attitudes about themselves in relationship to their work. It has been considered a problem and a contagion. This study was the initial basic research on teacher burnout conducted in North Dakota.
