Evaluation Of The Interaction Between Seepage From A Municipal Waste Stabilization Lagoon, Mcville, North Dakota, And A Shallow Unconfined Aquifer, Paul R. Bulger

The McVille, North Dakota, Municipal Waste Stabilization Lagoon is situated above the McVille Aquifer, an unconfined glaciofluvial aquifer capable of significant water yields. The site contains a 3-D network of 29 monitoring wells. Standing waste-water is maintained in the clay-lined, primary-operating cell. Operating practices at the site entail periodic discharges of waste-water from the lined cell to an unlined cell, a procedure which results in rapid infiltration.

The shape and extent of the groundwater contaminant plume caused by the waste-stabilization process is best delineated by the distribution of chloride. Background wells contain less than 10 mg/L chloride. The area up …

Several studies in the field of laterality have suggested that the left and right cerebral hemispheres of the brain may play different roles in emotional as well as cognitive processing. A study was conducted to test several specific hypotheses derived from theories proposing that the right hemisphere (RH) may have a generally greater involvement in emotional behavior, may be more expansive and less constrained by rational or conventional thinking, and may be particularly involved in such negative emotions as sadness.Twenty-five male and twenty-five female adult volunteers were each presented five Rorschach slides to the left visual hemifield (LVF) and five …

Metal vapor reactor syntheses of 23 $\pi$-areneML$\sb2$ complexes, where M = Fe, Co, or Ni, were attempted. These reactions were used as a synthetic survey to expand the number of complexes available for study. Although the survey has not yet resulted in the isolation of new $\pi$-areneML$\sb2$ complexes, it has resulted in 10 potentially useful synthetic reactions which may eventually lead to several new complexes of this type. Stomach content analysis of 395 predatory fish caught near the point of smolt release suggested that rainbow smelt, Osmerus mordax (Mitchill), may be an important buffer of predation on stocked chinook smolts, Oncorhynchus tshawytscha (Walbaum). Numbers of chinook smolts consumed per predator were higher, while number of rainbow smelt consumed per predator were lower, then water temperatures at 5 m were greater than 17$\sp\circ$C than when they were less than 17$\sp\circ$C. Rainbow smelt distributed lower in the water column and apparently became unavailable to shallow water predators later in the season. Salmon smolts surface-fed primarily on flying insects, and were …

The population biology and life history patterns of the Piping Plover (Charadrius melodus Ord), an endangered shorebird, were studied throughout the species' range from 1981-1987. Life history patterns were investigated in southern Manitoba at West Shoal Lake, Lake Manitoba, and Lake Winnipeg (1981-1985); and at Lake of the Woods, Minnesota (1985-1986). Distribution patterns were determined via censusing during the breeding season and winter (1983-1987). In 1985, feather pulp was collected for electrophoretic analyses from 122 fledglings in Saskatchewan, North Dakota, Manitoba, Minnesota, and New Brunswick. Blood was collected from 57 adults in Manitoba and Minnesota to electrophoretically examine brood parentage.Widespread …

A study of the binding of copper(II)-amine complexes to polyacrylic acid was undertaken. Experimental binding curves were generated for polyacrylic acid having molecular weights of 11,050 and 1600 at an ionic strength of.5M and also at an ionic strength of.1M for the 11,050 molecular weight sample. An analysis of the experimental data indicates that the coordinating species is copper(II)-triamine. The formation curves were fit to analytical binding models and it was found that the higher molecular weight polyions exhibit cooperative behavior. Intrasexual competition among males is a dominant feature of the mating system of most animals. Far fewer species exhibit female-female competition for mates. However, species showing reversal of the typical sex roles afford special opportunities to evaluate evolutionary generalities concerning sexual selection and mating systems.I studied Wilson's phalarope (Phalaropus tricolor), a sex-role reversed, nonterritorial shorebird, from 1982-1986 at Last Mountain Lake Wildlife Management Unit in southcentral Saskatchewan, Canada. Phalaropes were individually marked and data on breeding biology were recorded during daily observation periods. The intention of the researcher was to discover the level of critical thinking skills of undergraduate teacher education students attending the University of North Dakota (UND) during the spring semester of 1987. The Watson-Glaser Critical Thinking Appraisal (CTA) was used to identify the level of critical thinking of the participants. A demographic data sheet was prepared by the researcher from which general data were gathered for the study.Data were analyzed by analyses of variance, multiple comparisons of means, and a simple t-test. In the Williston Basin, the Winnipegosis Formation is the major carbonate unit of the initial transgressive-regressive pulse of the Kaskaskia sequence. Twenty-two lithofacies were identified by well-log, core, and thin-section studies of Winnipegosis rocks; these belong to seven environments of deposition which include deep basin, deep shelf, shallow shelf, reef, lagoon, tidal flat, and evaporite basin. The deposition of the Winnipegosis and Prairie Formations were inter-related and occurred during six episodes. Following a brief hiatus separating the underlying Ashern Formation from the Winnipegosis, a clear, quiet, shallow-marine environment became established in the North Dakota portion of the Elk Point Basin. …

Histamine is known to cause an H$\sb 1$-receptor mediated vasoconstriction and an H$\sb2$-receptor mediated vasodilation in the coronary vasculature of the rabbit heart. In this study we looked at the role that the adenyl cyclase-cyclic AMP system plays in mediation of the histamine response in the vascular smooth muscle. Change in perfusion pressure in the isolated rabbit heart was used as the index of change in vascular tone when histamine was added to the perfusate. The vascular response to histamine was then studied while cAMP levels were altered by adenyl cyclase potentiation and phosphodiesterase inhibition. After the physiological responses of …
