Previous work has demonstrated that adult newt myocytes possess a proliferative ability in response to an experimentally-induced injury, in vivo. The work outlined in this study has been an effort to develop an additional in vitro model to study proliferative events in the adult cardiac myocyte.Ventricles were minced and then enzymatically dissociated in a Ca$\sp{++}$ and Mg$\sp{++}$-free salt solution containing 0.5% trypsin and 625 U/ml of CLS II collagenase for 8 to 10 hours at 25$\sp\circ$C. Cattle and laboratory animals display acquired immunologically based resistance to ixodid tick feeding. Antibody, cell mediated, and complement dependent effector mechanisms are involved in this immunological response. The current study was concerned with the isolation and characterization of ixodid tick molecules involved in the host immune response to infestation.Ixodid ova extracts were fractionated by membrane ultrafiltration and Sephadex G 200 gel permeation chromatography. The whole ova extract and defined molecular weight fractions obtained were analyzed for their ability to interact with immune effector elements of tick resistant hosts.Amblyomma americanum whole ova extract induced both immediate and delayed skin hypersensitivity in …

In Project 1 as part of an overall effort to synthesize modified nucleosides via organotransition metal chemistry, the nickel-catalyzed cross-coupling reactions between alkyl- and aryl-Grignard reagents and 6-chloropurine were investigated. A series of 6-substituted purine nucleosides have been made which may exhibit a considerable range of biological activity.Project 2 concerned the synthesis of nucleotide-insertanes as probes for transport; Part A specifically was related to macrocyclic ethers. Crown ethers were designed which, in addition to their intrinsic structural interest, were anticipated to be useful as synthetic intermediates, and as carriers for the transport of nucleotides through cell membranes. Verbal Memory Changes In Elderly Nursing Home Residents With Suspected Senile Dementia Of The Alzheimer's Type., Scott Mark Bodine

Forty eight elderly subjects who were residents of nursing homes and retirement centers participated in the study which was designed to evaluate verbal memory functioning in presumed Senile Dementia of the Alzheimer's Type (SDAT). Half of the subjects exhibited significant decline in memory as evidenced by raw scores of 50 or below on the Wechsler Memory Scale. Declines in memory were not attributable to depression, cerebrovascular accident, alcohol abuse or severe mental disorders. The demented group performed lower than the group with intact memory on a measure of verbal ability. The memory tasks employed were free recall of word lists, …

The current research was designed to compare effectiveness of two widely used stress reduction methods, Progressive Relaxation Training (PRT) and Stress Inoculation Training (SIT). The entire Fall 1987, freshman class of Creighton University School of Dentistry participated (N =.68). Fifty-eight Subjects completed the project. Students were randomly assigned to a treatment, PRT (N = 12) or SIT (N = 17), or to one of two control groups, placebo (N = 13), or no treatment (N = 16). Foraminiferida Of The Madison Group (Mississippian) Of The Williston Basin, North Dakota, Kurt E. Eylands

More than 1500 thin-sections from 73 wells in the North Dakota part of the Williston Basin were searched for their foraminiferal content. This thin-section survey of the Bottineau, Tilston, Frobisher-Alida, and Ratcliffe intervals yielded more than 700 identifiable foraminifers assigned to 26 species.

Most of the Madison foraminifers of the Williston Basin can be placed in one of two superfamilies, the Tournayellacia and the Endothyracea. The Bottineau and Tilston intervals yielded more specimens from the superfamily Tournayellacea while the Frobisher-Alida and Ratcliffe intervals yielded more specimens from the superfamily Endothyracea.

Sedimentary Depositional Cyclicity, Mission Canyon And Charles Formations (Mississippian), Williston Basin, North Dakota, Jean L. Hoff

Workers within the Williston Basin have repeatedly reported the presence of sedimentary cyclicity within the carbonate and evaporite succession of the Mississippian Madison Group. Descriptions of cyclicity are diverse and commonly conflict. Previous work has been exclusively qualitative. This study used a group of statistical techniques in a method designed specifically for the objective identification and evaluation of cyclicity in the lithofacies sequence of the Mission Canyon and lower Charles Formations in North Dakota.

Twelve cores were sampled at every visually distinguishable lithologic unit. Forty-six lithologic components were counted in each sample on a presence-absence basis. The phi association coefficient …

Clathrin coated vesicles (CCVs) are complex organelles reported to bind specific glycolytic enzymes. The purpose of this study was to further biochemically characterize the interactions of selected enzymes with CCV's by conventional and new techniques.Purified brain CCVs were observed to retain, in varying degrees, endogenous glycolytic enzymes, with glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) and pyruvate kinase (PK) having the highest specific activities. Furthermore, Scatchard and Hill plot analyses of saturation binding data suggested that the binding of pure aldolase (ALD) and GAPDH involved heterogenous binding sites or cooperativity. Moreover, increasing concentrations of added ALD could not completely release bound GAPDH from …

The Grand Forks Municipal Landfill, located in the Red River Valley of eastern North Dakota, accepts household refuse from the city of Grand Forks and from surrounding rural communities including several towns in northwestern Minnesota. The landfill occupies 160 acres (64.8 hectars) and another 160 acres (64.8 hectars) is available for expansion. The trench method of disposal is used at the landfill.

A geologic and hydrogeologic investigation was undertaken at the landfill to determine the characteristics of the shallow, saturated, fine-grained lacustrine sediments for solid waste disposal. Test holes were drilled to collect core samples for textural analysis, clay mineralogy …
