One major function of prolactin in the female is the stimulation of mammary gland development for lactation. It is well established in the rat that during periods of lactation, when serum prolactin levels are high, there is a suppression of the serum luteinizing hormone level. Prolactin has also been shown to inhibit the postcastration rise in serum luteinizing hormone in rats. Work addressing the question of site and mechanism of action of the inhibition of gonadotropin secretion by prolactin has focused on the relationship between the hypothalamus and the pituitary, and the relationship between the different cell types in the …

Wetlands used by nesting birds have traditionally been considered the only habitats able to influence natality rates. I examined the potential for body reserves (fat, protein, and calcium) acquired on spring staging areas to be used for reproduction. My objectives were to: 1) describe changes in body reserves during spring, 2) examine alternative uses for body reserves in spring migrants, and 3) identify where reserves are acquired.

Penetration of blood vessel basement membranes (BMs) by metastatic cells apparently proceeds by a three step process involving attachment, degradation, and migration. In the current study, isolated glomerular BMs (GBMs) were used as model substrates for studying cell attachment to BMs.Murine and bovine gomeruli were isolated by differential sieving of homogenized renal tissues. GBMs were prepared by treating glomeruli with detergents and enzymes. This was facilitated by using "sieving chambers" which prevented tissue loss during the detergent extraction procedure. The ultrastructure of detergent isolated murine and bovine GBMs was similar to other species, although they had a greater tendency to …

The method of library least-square analysis (LLSA) has been applied to gamma ray spectra obtained from the Grand Forks Human Nutrition Research Center whole body counter. Phosphate-modified oligodeoxyribonucleotide analogs have been extensively investigated for the sequence hybridization arrest of mRNA translation and as biochemical probes of nucleic acid-protein interaction. The goal of our research was to synthesize a new class of nonionic oligodeoxyribonucleotides which structurally closely resembled natural DNA.Our initial research concentrated on the synthesis of bis(deoxythymidine) difluoromethylphosphonate, a dinucleotide analog of 5$\sp\prime$-deoxythymidyl-3$\sp\prime$-deoxythymidine in which a CF$\sb2$H group replaces a phosphate OH. The difluoromethyl group is isosteric and isopolar to an oxygen atom. We chose to model our approach after a scheme devised for conventional phosphodiester synthesis via the protected hydroxybenzotriazole of phosphonic acid. The difluoromethylphosphonate …

Glucose-6-phosphatase (EC 3.1.3.9) occupies a strategic metabolic location in hepatic glucose metabolism, is multifunctional in nature, consists of multiple components, and exhibits unique kinetic characteristics. These properties of glucose-6-phosphatase make it a likely candidate for regulation of glucose metabolism.The effect of selected intermediate metabolites on the phosphotransferase and phosphohydrolase activities of glucose-6-phosphatase was investigated with intact and detergent-disrupted microsomal preparations. Detergent treatment exposed the catalytic unit of microsomal preparations. The interaction of the metabolite with the catalytic unit was assessed in these preparations. The study of metabolites with the glucose-6-phosphatase of intact microsomes served to characterize the interactions of the …

These probes can be useful in many areas including diagnostics, sequencing and therapeutics, and will be discussed later in more detail.The development of DNA probes is important in the diagnostic area because the use of the probes can diminish dramatically the time needed to diagnose an infection (from weeks to hours). The impact of mammalian predation on upland nesting waterfowl was studied in central- North Dakota during the summers of 1987 and 1988. Survival of artificial nests was examined in relation to nest density, vegetation cover, distance from roads, active predator dens, and other artificial nests in a plot. Survival of artificial nests was also compared between an area with predator control and one without predator control.

Artificial waterfowl nests located in high density plots had a significantly lower probability of survival than nests located in low density plots. Although there were significant differences in vegetation height and density between years, …

This study was designed to examine the perceptions of students training to be counselors, clinical psychologists, and social workers, regarding the professional titles of counseling psychologist, psychiatrist, clinical psychologist, and social worker. A videotaped counseling session of a therapist and a client, a client description, and a therapist description served as the stimuli. The professional title of the therapist varied in the therapist description and served as the independent variable. I studied gray partridge (Perdix perdix) ecology in north-central North Dakota during 1985-87. The primary goals of this study were to identify habitats important to gray partridge survival and nesting, and to provide baseline data on partridge ecology in North Dakota. I captured and radio-tagged 100 gray partridge, mainly during winter. Individuals were tracked by a vehicle-mounted telemetry system until August of each year. Home ranges, movements, habitat use, and survival were calculated by using the telemetry locations. Winter home ranges averaged 117 ha, and were larger than previously reported in North America. The purpose of this study was to investigate the ways in which stated institutional missions influenced the operation of teacher education programs, and the way that teacher education programs used the institutional mission statement in evaluating their programs as it applied to two private, liberal arts colleges in Minnesota. Institutional missions were expected to guide curricular policy, inform the public, and establish criteria for accountability and subsequent program evaluation.

The societal preference for a slender body image has caused an increasing number of adolescents to diet or use unusual methods of weight control. Some adolescents progress along the continuum of restrained eating toward the development of pathological eating disorders. In order to identify risk factors in the development of eating disorders, eating attitudes and behaviors of 454 normal adolescents were studied by using the Eating Disorder Inventory (EDI) and a personal background questionnaire. The higher the subscale scores on the EDI the more similar the individual's perceptions to those of victims with a pathological eating disorder.

The purpose of this study was to determine the primary personifications of death as perceived by college students. One hundred fifteen students from private and public institutions of higher learning were invited to participate in the study. Surveys from one hundred nine were useable. The questionnaire consisted of a demographic survey, factors related to an individual's experience with death and death education, and a research instrument known as the Death Personification Exercise
