Basement Membrane Heterogeneity: A High Resolution Sem Study Of Renal Basement Membrane Ultrastructure Following Enzyme Microdissection., Walter Jesse Berger Iii

The purpose of this study is to utilize high resolution SEM to examine topographical features of acellular renal cortical basement membranes (BMs) in the rat. Alterations in ultrastructure of protease-digested samples are evaluated in terms of the concept of BM heterogeneity, and an attempt is made to correlate observed changes with known components of BMs.Renal cortical blocks were rendered acellular by sequential detergent extraction, and digested either with 150 $\mu$g/ml Streptomyces griseus protease (SGP) or with 5 mg/ml pepsin and conventionally prepared for SEM and correlative TEM.With both proteases, Bowman's capsular BM (BCBM), tubular BM (TBM) and glomerular BM (GBM) …

Ticks are both vectors and reservoirs for significant pathogens of man and livestock. They are currently controlled through use of acaracides, but have rapidly developed resistance to every new acaracide produced to date. Alternative methods of control are needed. One proposed alternative is immunologic control, achieved through vaccinations which induce resistance to tick infestation. This proposal stems from the knowledge that cattle and laboratory animals actively acquire resistance to infestation. Immunization with crude extracts of different ixodid life cycle stages or organs has induced limited levels of resistance compared to acquired resistance. The present study evaluated the impact of age and several individual difference measures on lexical access. Additionally, eight different levels of frequency were evaluated for the stimulus words. These frequency levels were derived from the frequency of usage of these words in common reading materials. The response measured was latency of reading words out loud as they appeared on a screen. The results indicated no difference between older and younger adults on measures of anxiety, depression, or overall health. The older adults scored higher on a measure of vocabulary skills, while the younger adults scored higher on tasks involving abstract …

A systems model has been proposed as useful theoretical framework for the study of incestuous families (Alexander, 1985) and is frequently used in the therapeutic treatment of the victim of sexual abuse and his or her perpetrator (Larson and Maddock, 1986). The purpose of this study was the construction and standardization of an instrument for assessing a multiaxial model of enmeshed and disengaged family systems which is based on the prior work of Minuchin et al. (1978) and Kog et al. (1987).

The human promyelocytic leukemia cell line HL-60 has been studied extensively since the time of it's discovery and has been proven to be a valuable tool for the study of the differentiation process. The capacity of the HL-60 cell line to differentiate to macrophage-like cells, which may be immunologically competent, has proven to be invaluable in the study of these cells as a model for macrophage function. A number of hydrolytic enzymes are characteristically found in macrophages. In an effort to further characterize diferentiated HL-60 cells as macrophages, the location and concentration of a number of these enzymes was determined. …

Many studies of the protein interactions that compose the microtrabecular lattice have been done in dilute solutions. However, solutions containing inert polymers such as polyethylene glycol (PEG) more effectively mimic the crowded interior of the cell. Characterization And Utilization Of High- And Low-Sodium Lignite Of The Beulah-Zap Bed (Paleocene), Indian Head Mine, Southwestern North Dakota, Gale G. Mayer

A study of high- and low-sodium lignite of the Beulah-Zap bed sampled at the Indian Head Mine, Pit 11 and 12, respectively, in Mercer County, North Dakota and fly ash derived from utilization tests on the lignite, indicates the fly-ash composition and related utilization potential can be correlated to coal geochemistry.

Average lithotype abundances for each of the sampling sites were estimated to be vitrain 50%, attritus 45%, and fusain 5%. Attritus occurs more frequently in the upper part and vitrain in the middle and lower parts of the seam. Maceral groups, identified microscopically, were (in order of decreasing abundance): …

Hydrogeology Of The Hillsboro Landfill, Hillsboro, North Dakota, Jeffrey D. Maletzke

Landfills are the primary means for land disposal of solid wastes, and as such, they represent potential sources of groundwater contamination. This potential for contamination is exemplified by the Hillsboro landfill, which was emplaced above the Hillsboro aquifer, within permeable surface materials, and under shallow water-table conditions. Burial of refuse in trenches 15-feet (4.57 m) deep ensure that at least portions of the refuse are below the water table, which varied from 5.4 to 13.2 feet (1.7 to 4.0 m) below the surface. Concern over these factors led to the present study.

Subsurface conditions were investigated by electrical, earth-resistivity surveying. …
