Loneliness is considered one of the most prevalent social problems. Difficulties in definition, measurement, and conceptualization have hindered its investigation. In an attempt to address these difficulties, the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA) Loneliness Scale was developed in 1976 and subsequently revised. It has become one of the most widely used measurements of loneliness.This investigation was an attempt to address further some of the lingering concerns about the psychometric properties of the Scale. Two hundred women enrolled in undergraduate classes at the University of North Dakota were administered the UCLA Loneliness Scale along with a battery of other …
A Quantitative Analysis Of The Effects Of Adenosine And Hypoxia On The Proliferative Capacity Of Bovine Retinal Microvascular Pericytes In Vitro., Jon A. Jackson

The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of adenosine and hypoxia on the proliferation of microvascular pericytes from bovine retina. This was accomplished through: (1) development of in vitro methods which allowed consistent isolation and propagation of homogeneous retinal pericyte cultures; (2) manipulation of oxygen partial pressure in the culture chamber; (3) culture of retinal pericytes in physiologically relevant concentrations of various vasoactive substances.Retinal pericytes were obtained, by homogenization and enzyme digestion, from aseptically isolated bovine retinal vessels. Efficacy of the culture methods in generating a homogeneous population of pericytes was determined using immunocytochemical markers of microvascular …

The purpose of this study was to examine the effectiveness of a parent training program, "FACTS," by: (1) increasing the parents' perceived ability to participate in the special education process of their child as an active participant, and (2) lowering the level of stress experienced as they interact with the educational system of their children.
This study involved an experimental group consisting of 26 parents who received the parent training program and a control group consisting of 24 parents who did not receive the parent training program. Both groups completed pre- and post-test measures. The instruments used for this measure …

Picture Viewing As A Test Of Attention To Food And Body Image Cues In Restrained Versus Nonrestrained Eaters, Sally Rose Brinza

Restrained eaters, those who chronically and severely restrict food intake in order to lose weight, are thought to exhibit thoughts and behaviors similar to those seen in semi-starved and eating disordered (bulimic and anorexic) individuals. A paradoxical tendency to overeat once food restraint is disinhibited has been noted in restrainers. Food and body weight preoccupation and hyperresponsiveness to external food cues have been hypothesized to occur in restrained individuals; however the literature reports conflicting results and these factors have not been thoroughly investigated. Cognitive factors which differentiate restrained eaters from nonrestrained eaters may affect information processing.

Chautauqua, a totally American institution which impacted nearly forty million people in its approximately fifty-year existence from 1874 to 1930, was a place to enrich lives through education, inspiration, and recreation. Devils Lake, North Dakota, a small, isolated town on the Midwestern plains, located on the shores of a large, salt-water lake, became the site of the nation's third largest independent Chautauqua in the nation, operating from 1893 to 1929.
This thesis is a study of the history of the Devils Lake Chautauqua, its organization, and development. Included in the research is a study of the national Chautauqua and Lyceum …

The purpose of this study was to determine the consequences to emotionally disturbed elementary school girls of being in the minority in self-contained classes for emotionally disturbed children. This study was conducted in MISII (Modified Instructional Service II) classes, primarily for the emotionally disturbed, in the New York City Public Schools. The ratio of boys to girls was 6.5 to 1. A survey was distributed to teachers of such classes with at least one girl attending. Part 1 of the survey consisted of 36 statements on the following topics indicated by the literature as relevant to the situation of girls …
