Small Mammal Demographics In North Dakota Conservation Reserve Program Plantings, Larry A. Lysne

During the summers of 1989 and 1990, capture-recapture methods were used to de~ermine small mammal demographics and population dynamics in Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) plantings in north central North Dakota. Four age classes (1-4 years) of CRP plantings were sampled. Small mammal species diversity was low (H'=0.057-0.374). Eight species of small mammals were captured on CRP tracts, with deer mice (Peromyscus maniculatus) comprising 92% of all small mammals recorded. Largest deer mouse populations (64/ha .and 51/ha) occurred in late August and early September, 1990. Peak densities in 1990 were over twice as high as those of 1989. Home range sizes …

This study examined general education at a university and a community college in North Dakota in regard to purpose, structure, content, core, breadth, and coherence. The purpose of the study was to determine actual general education course-taking patterns by all graduates of the institutions and by differentiated majors. The research methodology was a case study and a profile of actual course-taking patterns as recorded on the transcripts of the 1990 baccalaureate degree graduates of the university and the 1989 and 1990 associate degree graduates at the community college.

The profiles of general education coursework at the two institutions were similar. …

The oxidized and reduced forms of ascorbic acid (AA) are reactive and unstable compounds making their measurement difficult. Detection of small amounts of AA and dehydroascorbic acid (DHAA) is essential for determining the biochemical function of the vitamin in cells and subcellular organelles. While a variety of techniques exist which detect millimolar levels of AA, accurate assessment of pmol levels of AA and DHAA in a variety of tissues has not been perfected. The purpose of this study was to examine the efficacy of an Early Childhood Special Education program in a small city in northeastern North Dakota. The study examined the classroom placements and supportive services required by two hundred seventy two (272) preschool aged handicapped children prior to, during, and subsequent to their participation in the early intervention program. Children included in the study had attended the preschool program some time between the 1984-1985 school year and the 1990-1991 school year.

Oligonucleotides based on methyl phosphonate linkages between nucleoside units have been of particular interest as anti-sense molecules for inhibiting mRNA function. The focus of our research has been on the development of new construction techniques for anti-sense oligonucleotides. Specifically we have been investigating new methods for generating iron and cobalt-modified linkages in oligonucleotides during the course of automated synthesis.We have found that (dicarbonyl)($\eta\sp5$-cyclopentadienyl)($\eta\sp2$-ethylene)iron reacts with 5$\sp\prime$-O-dimethoxytritylnucleoside 3$\sp\prime$-phosphite esters to yield (dicarbonyl)($\eta\sp5$-cyclopentadienyl)iron(ethyl)phosphonates. These phosphonates appear to be stable to the conditions commonly used to construct oligonucleotides by phosphoramidite methodology. This chemistry has been extended to the formation of a dimer on …

In this study, the thinking practices of students as they used reading, writing, and talking in a thematic unit of study were described and analyzed.The subsidiary questions were suggested by recent studies and reports that indicated a decline of "thinking" in American schools. The questions were: (1) What categories of thinking were evident in the language and behaviors of young learners? Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK), an enzyme which exists as two distinct isozymes, is distributed in a species- and tissue-specific manner. The functions most commonly ascribed to bird song are mate attraction and territory defense. These are combined into the "dual function" hypothesis. I tested this hypothesis to determine if these are the functions of song in chipping sparrows (Spizella passerina).

I performed a series of neighbor/stranger song playbacks to test the territory defense portion of the "dual function" hypothesis. If song has a territorial function, songs of different individuals might be recognized by territory owners and might elicit different levels of response. However, territorial male chipping sparrows did not respond differently to neighbor and stranger song playbacks either early in …

Previous research has suggested that adult children of alcoholics (ACAs) are at increased risk for the development of alcoholism. Differences between ACA and control subjects have been reported for a range of cognitive, affective and behavioral measures in addition to certain components of the auditory evoked potential, supporting speculation that biological or psychological markers exist as predictors of future alcoholism. The subject of this paper is an assessment of the effectiveness of several student support activities provided by the Indians into Medicine (INMED) program at the University of North Dakota. INMED offers summer enrichment sessions and academic year support for Indian students preparing for health careers.

Program evaluation mechanisms include pre- and posttesting of participants in summer 1990 enrichment sessions, a questionnaire completed by 41 undergraduate and medical students in fall 1990, and statistical analyses of student achievement, with some tests using variables which researchers have found to be associated with achievement in college and professional school.

The overall objective of chapter one of this investigation was to determine if glucocorticoids were the endogenous modulators of inflammation. The two specific objectives of this investigation were, (a) to determine if there was a glucocorticoid response during the inhibitory phase of inflammation, and (b) to determine what would be the effects on inflammation if the glucocorticoid response were inhibited.The objectives were carried out using carrageenan-induced rat paw edema as a model for inflammation. The reasons why some people eat more than others, have more body fat, or develop some type of eating disorder have been related to the concepts of hunger/satiety, appetite, and their underlying mechanisms. Research has focused on both physiological and cognitive factors related to the regulation of eating behavior. The role of the ventromedial and lateral hypothalamic nuclei with putative connections to the autonomic nervous system has been extensively studied. The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the recently introduced (DSM-III-R) Self-defeating Personality Disorder (SDPD) at the construct level. The trait structure of the construct and possible gender biases were analyzed. For purposes of construct investigation, a model addressing certain processes of human judgment was used. This model consisted of a trait inferencing method and three parameters: (1) consensual accuracy, (2) threshold, and (3) salience. A rating instrument consisting of selected items from scales of the Basic Personality Inventory (BPI) was used.
