Childhood Maltreatment Predictors Of Trait Impulsivity, Tiffany D. Russell, Amy Veith, Alan R. King

This chapter provides a summary of empirical evidence linking childhood maltreatment and trait impulsivity. While biological contributors to impulsivity may be substantial, this review speculates that childhood and adolescent contributors may potentially alter the developmental trajectory of this personality trait in important ways. An analysis of original data (N = 401) regarding child maltreatment associations (childhood sexual abuse, physical abuse, sibling abuse, peer bullying, corporal punishment, and exposure to domestic violence) with trait impulsivity as measured by the Personality Inventory for the DSM-5 was also conducted. Adult respondents were assigned to extreme child abuse categories based on their retrospective self-reports. …

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) is a major depressive disorder that primarily occurs in the fall and continues until remission in the late spring to early summer. It is considered a major public health problem due to the effects that depression can have on the general population (e.g. inability to work, unable to pay bills, not able to maintain healthy relationships). This disorder affects approximately 0.4 to 2.9% of the general population, primarily those living in the northern latitudes. Seasonal affective disorder is a recurrent depressive disorder that follows a seasonal pattern with treatment focused on antidepressant therapy, light therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy (Thaler et al, 201 1 ). The relevance of this paper is to examine the treatment options available for seasonal affective disorder and detem1ine the best practice management for the patient. The case described is a 55-year-old male patient with recurrent depression symptoms who was treated with antidepressant therapy with the consideration that this may be the best supported treatment option; however other viable options are available as well.

Late referrals to palliative care services for patients suffering from terminal lung cancer is an ongoing problem that unnecessarily shortens patient survival time by inadequate and poorly timed symptom control that affects the remaining quality of life for both patient and family. The latest mortality figures available (2011) showed approximately 157,000 people died due to cancer of the lung, trachea, and bronchus (CDC, 2014a). Each year millions of people in the United States are infested with head lice. Despite common beliefs that schools are the epicenter of transmission, this has been not been proven to be true. Regardless of this fact many schools continue to enforce no nit/lice policies by excluding children perceived to be infected from school. Consequences of such policies include loss of school days, mistreatment, economic burden, and shame. Depression is a common and debilitating mental illness in the U.S. It affects a great number of people and yet often it goes undiagnosed and undertreated. Older adults are especially under-diagnosed because of different presentation in symptoms and increased commodities. Mark, a 55 year old male patient presented with fatigue at the clinic. Fatigue can be a symptom of many conditions. Labs were unremarkable and there were no physical examination findings indicating depression. Patient did not report complete depressive symptoms until PHQ-9 was employed. He was diagnosed with moderate depression, opted for cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) over antidepressant medications (ADMs). …

Lung-targeting drugs are thought to be potential therapies of refractory lung diseases by maximizing local drug concentrations in the lung to avoid systemic circulation. However, a major limitation in developing lung-targeted drugs is the acquirement of lung-specific ligands. Pulmonary surfactant protein A (SPA) is predominantly synthesized by type II alveolar epithelial cells, and may serve as a potential lung-targeting ligand. Here, we generated recombinant rat pulmonary SPA (rSPA) as an antigen and immunized an alpaca to produce two nanobodies (the smallest naturally occurring antibodies) specific for rSPA, designated Nb6 and Nb17. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS) (2014), colorectal cancer (CRC) is the "3rd leading cause of cancer related deaths in the United States"(p. 3). Researches have hypothesized how dietary habits could increase an individual's risk of developing CRC. Diets high in red meat for example, have long been thought to produce carcinogens through cooking and digestive processes. These carcinogens damage colon DNA, leading to neoplastic changes (Raskov, Pommergaard, Burcharth, & Rosenberg, 2014). The need for health literate communication is evident in a changing and complex health care system. Yet, little formal training is available for nurses, physicians, and other health clinicians. Poor communication in the healthcare setting has negative effects on the patient, on the clinician, the health system and the larger community. This literature review identified techniques evident in the literature to produce positive patient and clinician health and communication outcomes. Supported interventions include communication techniques such as motivational interviewing, teach-back, teach-to-goal, the Four Habits Model and the Ask Me 3 model. Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) has been increasing in clinical as well as nonclinical populations in recent years. There are few published reports examining lifetime occurrence of this behavior in transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people. An online survey was conducted with self-identified TGNC adults (n = 773) in the United States over the course of 6 months in 2009. The mean age for the sample was 40.4 years (SD = 13.9). Most participants identified on the trans masculine spectrum (female-to-male or FTM; 52.0%), 33.9% identified on the trans feminine spectrum (male-to-female or MTF), and 8.0% identified as genderqueer. Klebsiella pneumoniae (Kp) is one of the most common pathogens in nosocomial infections and is increasingly becoming multiple drug resistant. However, the molecular pathogenesis of Kp in causing tissue injury and dysregulated host defense remains elusive, further dampening the development of novel therapeutic measures. We have previously screened a series of synthetic antimicrobial beta-sheet forming peptides and identified a peptide (IRIKIRIK; ie, IK8L) with a broad range of bactericidal activity and low cytotoxicity in vitro. Here, employing an animal model, we investigated the antibacterial effects of IK8L in acute infection and demonstrated that peritoneal injection of IK8L to mice down-regulated …
