Voice Onset Times And Burst Frequencies Of Four Velar Stop Consonants In Gujarati, Manish Rami, Joseph Kalinowski, Andrew Stuart, Michael P. Rastatter Dec 1999

Voice Onset Times And Burst Frequencies Of Four Velar Stop Consonants In Gujarati, Manish Rami, Joseph Kalinowski, Andrew Stuart, Michael P. Rastatter

Communication Sciences & Disorders Faculty Publications

Voice onset times (VOT) and burst frequencies of two aspirated (i.e., /kh /, /gh/)  and two unaspirated (i.e., /k/, /g/) Gujarati velar stop consonants were investigated in an effort to provide characteristic acoustic information. Stop consonants in a monosyllabic vowel–consonant–vowel (VCV) production were obtained from eight native speakers of Gujarati. Differences in mean VOT and burst frequency as a function of voicing and aspiration were examined. A significant voicing by aspiration effect was found for VOT (p = 50.026). The two voiced stops, while not significantly different from each other had significantly shorter VOTs than voiceless …

Student Participation In The Academic Discourse Community: An Esl Student Working Independently And Esl Students Working With Writing Tutors, Heather J. Walker Dec 1999

Student Participation In The Academic Discourse Community: An Esl Student Working Independently And Esl Students Working With Writing Tutors, Heather J. Walker

Theses and Dissertations

Penetration of the academic discourse community is a challenging obstacle for students who speak English as a Second Language. Not only are ESL students expected to understand academic concepts presented to them in a second language, but they are expected to demonstrate and refine these concepts through conceptual activities in another culture's written discourse. To handle this cognitive load, they rely on various strategies often effective but sometimes ineffective. Many ESL students have chosen the strategy of working with the tutors in a writing center. Other students have a more independent approach. What is the role of the tutors as …

Listening Comprehension In Alcoholics., Sandra Owens Jul 1999

Listening Comprehension In Alcoholics., Sandra Owens

Theses and Dissertations

The literature on alcoholism has firmly established that impairments in cognition can remain for several weeks or longer in the detoxified alcoholic. Whether this impairment can impact relapse rates has been studied. In general, poor recovery on abstract reasoning, visual spatial tasks, and problem solving have been linked to higher relapse rates. Older age and less education can interact with cognitive impairments and increase relapse rates. Because the treatment modalities are dependent on listening and processing of information, there was a question as to what extent listening comprehension was impacted following detoxification, and to what degree deficits in this area …

Perceptions Of American Indian Students Of Their Experiences And Factors Related To Retention In Selected Institutions Of Higher Education, Donald R. Day

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify the perceptions of American Indian students regarding higher education and to examine factors that contribute to or create obstacles to their retention and graduation. The sample of American Indian students was selected from five Upper Midwest institutions of higher education and was stratified by age and by gender. A total of 100 students participated in the study, with 20 from each institution representing equal numbers of traditional age females (18–24 years of age), traditional age males, females older than average (25 years of age or older), and males older than average.

Mainstreaming The Marginalized: Secondary Mainstream Teachers' Perceptions Of Esl Students, Cheryl Stanosheck Youngs

Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study focused on the following question: What are the perceptions and experiences of mainstream classroom teachers working with ESL students in their regular, content area classrooms? There are increasing numbers of ESL students entering mainstream classrooms. Unfortunately, most mainstream teachers often are not trained to teach ESL students.

This study was conducted in a Great Plains community. It began with a district-wide survey to profile the typical mainstream teachers' experience with ESL students. Then, eight mainstream teachers were recruited for a series of intensive interviews, and interviews of three ESL administrator/teachers also were conducted.

The survey showed that …

The Lived Experience Of Graduate Nursing Students In Distance Education, Nancy L. Mosbaek May 1999

The Lived Experience Of Graduate Nursing Students In Distance Education, Nancy L. Mosbaek

Theses and Dissertations

This study explored the lived experience of graduate nursing students enrolled in an interactive television course offered through distance education. Areas of focus were the technology of distance education, instructional strategies, the learning community, and communication. The qualitative research methods of interviewing, observation, and artifact/documentation review were employed. Students reported returning to school for both personal and professional reasons; self-satisfaction was most frequently mentioned. The need to work in a changing health care system was the major professional reason given. Due to multiple role responsibilities which made the participants time- and place-bound, distance education was reported to be the only …

Οτι Recitativum In John’S Gospel: A Stylistic Or A Pragmatic Device?, Stephen H. Levinsohn Jan 1999

Οτι Recitativum In John’S Gospel: A Stylistic Or A Pragmatic Device?, Stephen H. Levinsohn

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

This paper distinguishes three ways in which speech is reported in the Greek of John's Gospel: directly (without the complementizer hoti), indirectly (with hoti and appropriate changes to first and second person references), and in 'hoti-direct' form (i.e., with hoti but without changes to first and second person references). The default way of reporting speech in Koine Greek is directly. Typically, when using direct speech, the reporter purports to reproduce the original speech verbatim. When in indirect form, the speech is not reported verbatim and/or is backgrounded with respect to what follows. The hoti-direct form is …

Questions And Inversion In Ocotepec Mixtec, Roy Eberhardt Jan 1999

Questions And Inversion In Ocotepec Mixtec, Roy Eberhardt

Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session

Yes/No questions, Wh-questions, and embedded questions in Ocotepec Mixtec are described and analyzed within the Government and Binding framework. Questions involving prepositional phrases are unique in that the whole prepositional phrase must be fronted and then the question word is subsequently fronted again. Similar inversion occurs when a possessive phrase is questioned. Smith Stark (1988) documents this phenomenon as occurring across language families throughout Meso-America. Aissen (1996) analyzes it for Tzotzil, a VOS language, as secondary movement to the specifier of PP or DP. This analysis is not possible for Mixtec, a VSO language, so I posit adjunction to the …
