Structural Narratology In Romanian Sign Language Personal Experience Narratives, Jessica Sohre
Structural Narratology In Romanian Sign Language Personal Experience Narratives, Jessica Sohre
Theses and Dissertations
The primary focus of this paper is to examine how personal experience narratives in Romanian Sign Language (LSR) compare to previous research in structural narratology in spoken languages and in American Sign Language (ASL). One main area of comparison is the differences and similarities in the type of information found in structural narrative categories as described by Labov and Waletsky (1967), Labov (1972), Brewer (1984), Dooley and Levinsohn (2001) and Mulrooney (2009). The second main area of comparison is the grammatical devices that correlate to certain categories, in particular, using Liddell's (2003) concepts of surrogate, depicting verb and token blends. …
Tools For Assessing Relatedness In Understudied Language Varieties: A Survey Of Mixtec Varieties In Western Oaxaca, Mexico, Erin Padgett
Tools For Assessing Relatedness In Understudied Language Varieties: A Survey Of Mixtec Varieties In Western Oaxaca, Mexico, Erin Padgett
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis presents findings of research conducted on the relatedness of seven Mixtec varieties spoken in indigenous language communities in western Oaxaca, Mexico. Mixtec varieties vary widely from one community to the next, and it is necessary to determine the relatedness of Mixtec varieties in order to best serve the language development needs of communities. Understanding the relatedness of these varieties is also an important step in measuring their intelligibility.
I used three research tools to gather data: a General Wordlist, a Tone Wordlist, and a Sociolinguistic Questionnaire. I present five analyses: percentage of phonologically similar forms, displaying phonological correspondences …

Lexical Categories In Lengua De Señas Argentina, Roman Caceres
Lexical Categories In Lengua De Señas Argentina, Roman Caceres
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of this thesis is to identify lexical categories of Lengua de Señas Argentina (LSA). Sign languages, in general, have not been extensively researched. For example, the LSA section of the World Atlas of Language Structures only mentions irregular negatives and question particles.
The research methodology included interviews with fluent deaf signers. Different descriptions in LSA were video recorded, annotated and analyzed. The researcher made initial hypotheses about the syntactic nature of signs based on the strategy used for their elicitation. Then, the researcher tested the hypotheses through syntactic analysis.
During the analysis, the researcher identified two varieties of …

Teacher Perspectives On The Impact Of High-Stakes Testing On Students With Disabilities : A Grounded Theory Study, Tammy Marie Taylor
Teacher Perspectives On The Impact Of High-Stakes Testing On Students With Disabilities : A Grounded Theory Study, Tammy Marie Taylor
Theses and Dissertations
The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act 1997 (IDEA), No Child Left Behind Act 2001 (NCLB), and Every Child Succeeds Act 2015 (ESSA) has changed how public schools adapt to standards and accountability systems for all students, including students with mild-to-significant cognitive disabilities. Federal legislation has changed the focus of teaching and learning since the implementation of NCLB. This movement has altered the way students with disabilities are compared to their same-age peers.
High-stakes testing has generated numerous challenges for educators, administrators, parents, and students across the nation. Increased pressure has been placed on schools to achieve Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), …
The Postposition 'Bok' In The Arara Language, Shirley De Souza
The Postposition 'Bok' In The Arara Language, Shirley De Souza
Work Papers of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, University of North Dakota Session
In languages, the category of adpositions typically comprises a small class of morphemes that serve to locate one entity, the 'trajector', with reference to another entity, the 'landmark' within three-dimensional space. Adpositions tend to be highly polysemous. In this paper I consider the postposition bok in the Arara language. This postposition has a variety of disparate usages. My goal is to show how the meanings illustrated by these usages are related within a network.

Addressing Diversity In Medical Laboratory Science Education: Perceptions And Practices, Christie Lynn Massen
Addressing Diversity In Medical Laboratory Science Education: Perceptions And Practices, Christie Lynn Massen
Theses and Dissertations
Multicultural Education and Culturally Responsive Teaching methods have been available to assist educators in addressing diversity for a long time. However, the literature fails to address how diversity is being incorporated in laboratory science educational programs. The purpose of this study was to better understand Medical Laboratory Science (MLS) and Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) educators’ perceptions and practices. To understand what diversity in MLS and MLT education looks like, the following research questions were identified:
1. What are MLS and MLT instructors’ perceived levels of importance for addressing the needs of an increasingly diverse student population?
2. How do MLS …

Social And Emotional Learning In The Ell Classroom: A Case Study, Satoko Takeda Kao
Social And Emotional Learning In The Ell Classroom: A Case Study, Satoko Takeda Kao
Theses and Dissertations
The goal of social-emotional learning (SEL) is to create a safe environment for students to learn in and improve peer relationships, decrease conduct problems and emotional distress, and promote academic achievement. SEL program implementation has grown over the last decade in U.S. schools; however, these programs are designed for general education, not English Language Learner (ELL) students. Furthermore, research on teaching SEL to ELL students is limited.
This study explored what SEL looked like and how bullying prevention and character education programs were adapted in an elementary ELL classroom. The theoretical framework for this study was based on CASEL’s “Five …
Fuel Consumption Model Generation, Emission Estimation And Life Cycle Cost Analysis, Ehtesam Rabbi Rabbi
Fuel Consumption Model Generation, Emission Estimation And Life Cycle Cost Analysis, Ehtesam Rabbi Rabbi
Theses and Dissertations
There are a variety of transit bus sizes and types that are suitable for different types of cities, services, and operations. The size of a bus has a direct effect on the operating costs due to fuel consumption. Also, selecting bus size properly is very important for correct functioning and the quality and service level of public transportation. A decision on selecting bus size, fuel type and model year can only be made after considering the demand for each of the service routes on the system, fuel cost, and emission level. It is necessary to provide engineering resources to the …

A Health Care Provider Training Guide To Enhance Cultural Competency In Long-Term Care, Julia Mcbrien, Ashley Prososki
Occupational Therapy Capstones
The population of adults over the age of 65 in the United States is steadily increasing and becoming more diverse. Older adults are the greatest consumer of health care services, and they have unique health care needs. One notable health care need pertains to cultural beliefs and wants. When health care providers address the diverse needs of older adults, health outcomes improve for the client and communication across the interprofessional team improves. Therefore, the students of this scholarly project created a series of three, 50-minute long training sessions focused on training health care providers how to be culturally competent in …
Collaboration In English Language Learner Teacher Education: Implications For Moving Theory Into Practice, Katie Erin Erickson
Collaboration In English Language Learner Teacher Education: Implications For Moving Theory Into Practice, Katie Erin Erickson
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative phenomenological study was developed to fill the gap in current research on what extent five teacher educators, from three Midwest and one Southwest teacher education program, are preparing English Language Learner (ELL) preservice teachers to collaborate in ELL teacher education. The results indicate that ELL teacher educators are not preparing ELL preservice teachers to collaborate for K-12 ELLs. The interview data supports the implication that teacher educators perceive some degree of programmatic reform in teacher education programs is necessary for the integration of collaboration for ELL education.
There are several recommendations resulting from this study. Teacher education programs …
Trailer Park Residents: Are They Worthy Of Society's Respect, Steve Anderson
Trailer Park Residents: Are They Worthy Of Society's Respect, Steve Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
Existing research is limited in explaining the existence of and reasons for stereotypes held against trailer park residents. This study uses an experimental design to measure attitudes towards trailer park residents, specifically in terms of being considered worthy of society’s respect. An Internet questionnaire was designed and administered to a sample of 559 introductory sociology students at a Midwestern university using semantic differentials to measure attitudes towards a fictitious couple. Participants were divided into a control and an experimental group. The groups were presented with two different vignettes, which were the same except for the experimental group where the vignette …
Residual Deficits Observed In Athletes Following Concussion: Combined Eeg And Cognitive Study, Tamanna Tabassum Khan Munia
Residual Deficits Observed In Athletes Following Concussion: Combined Eeg And Cognitive Study, Tamanna Tabassum Khan Munia
Theses and Dissertations
The neurocognitive sequelae of a sport-related concussion and its management are poorly defined. Emerging evidence suggests that the residual deficits can persist one year or more following a brain injury. Detecting and quantifying the residual deficits are vital in making a decision about the treatment plan and may prevent further damage. For example, improper return to play (RTP) decisions in sports such as football have proven to be associated with the further chance of recurring injury, long-term neurophysiological impairments, and worsening of brain functional activity.
The reliability of traditional cognitive assessment tools is debatable, and thus attention has turned to …

Verbal Morphology And Grammatical Aspect In Sarikoli, Timothy S. Palmer
Verbal Morphology And Grammatical Aspect In Sarikoli, Timothy S. Palmer
Theses and Dissertations
Grammatical aspect in Sarikoli, an Eastern Iranian (Pamir) language, has never been adequately described. This work fills a gap in the descriptive literature, beginning with a straightforward restatement of verbal morphosyntax, and moving to a discussion of verb stems and their uses. Verb stems in Sarikoli include the infinitive, imperfective, perfective, and perfect. Additional morphemes discussed in this work include the durative clitic, stative (resultative) suffix, cessative suffix, and agreement suffixes and clitics.
Sarikoli verbal morphology encodes aspect, not tense. The major grammatical aspects of Sarikoli include perfective, imperfective, perfect, and durative. Verb stems and other aspectual marking in context …
