Coping In Parents Of Children Diagnosed With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Gloria A. Ayuck

Theses and Dissertations

Coping in parents of autistic children has been studied extensively with emphasis on the effect oflong-term disability on families. The increase in the prevalence of autism in the United States increases the likelihood that many families will be managed by midlevel providers including advanced practice nurses (APNs). Parents and siblings of children with ASDs suffer from more stress and mental health issues than families with typically developing children or other disabilities such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) and Down syndrome. The purpose of this independent study was to review the literature and practice guidelines examinjng coping in parents of …

Barriers And Facilitators Of Adolescent Breastfeeding, Darci L. Pelland

Theses and Dissertations

Human breast milk is the healthiest form of milk for human babies, which makes breastfeeding beneficial in so many ways. Breastfeeding promotes health for both the mother and infant, helps prevent disease, and reduces health care and feeding costs. With the superior qualities of breast milk becoming better-established in medical literature, breastfeeding rates have increased; however, many adolescents remain unaware of the role of breastfeeding in health promotion and disease prevention. This independent study identifies the barriers to breastfeeding in which adolescents face as well as strategies to facilitate breastfeeding among this population. The methodology includes a comprehensive review of …

Connecting Air Pollution Exposure To Cardiovascular Disease, Alison G. Kaneshiro May 2011

Connecting Air Pollution Exposure To Cardiovascular Disease, Alison G. Kaneshiro

Theses and Dissertations

Diseases of the heart are ranked as the number one cause of death for all ages in 2006. Recent evidence supports the co1Telation between the quality of air that is breathed and exacerbation of existing cardiovascular disease. Urban dwellers have higher exposure to pollution. Although the United States Environmental Protection Agency has been updating emissions standards, there are still areas where air quality standards have not been met. These non-attainment areas tend to be located around urban areas. Education related to the importance of decreasing exposure to air pollution and understanding the relationship between exposure and heart disease can impact …

Evidence-Base Practice: Screening For Depression And Suicidality In High Functioning Autistic Spectrum Disorder Adolescents, Jennifer A. Durward

Theses and Dissertations

Research regarding assessing for suicide and depression in high-functioning autistic spectrum disorders (HFASDs) is very limited. An extensive literature review focusing on HFASDs was conducted, which resulted in adolescents with HFASDs are likely to experience depression and suicidality compared to those who are neurotypical or those not diagnosed with an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) because of limited social and communication skills. These deficits put these individuals at risk for depression, therefore, suicidality. PubMed, SCOPUS, PsychiatryOnline. and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (C1NAHL) were used to research information for this independent study. Implications for psychiatric nurse practitioners and …

Theory-Derived Approaches To Behavioral And Psychological Symptoms Of Dementia, Bethany Speece May 2011

Theory-Derived Approaches To Behavioral And Psychological Symptoms Of Dementia, Bethany Speece

Theses and Dissertations

As the world's population ages, the prevalence of Alzheimer's disease and other conditions that cause dementia is expected to increase. Although there is some awareness of the dangers of psychotropic drugs used to address behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia, all too often these agents continue to be used as first-line treatment. Nurses need to be cognizant of safer, efficacious, holistic nonpharmacological approaches and utilize these in an individualized, systematic manner. Two mid-range nursing theories, the Need-Driven Dementia-Compromised Behavior model and the Progressively Lowered Stress Threshold model, provide conceptual frameworks for nonpharmacological interventions. This paper examines these models and describes …

The Effectiveness Of Using Non-Pharmacological Interventions In Managing Behavioral And Psychological Symptoms Of Dementia (Bpsd) In Long Term Care Facilities, Sandra J. Holmgren May 2011

The Effectiveness Of Using Non-Pharmacological Interventions In Managing Behavioral And Psychological Symptoms Of Dementia (Bpsd) In Long Term Care Facilities, Sandra J. Holmgren

Theses and Dissertations

Neuropsychiatric symptoms such as aggression, agitation, anxiety, mood disorders, and psychosis are frequently associated with the diagnosis of dementia (Schneder, Dagennan, & lnsel, 2005; Wand et al., 2005; Zee & Burkett, 2008). These tenns have been grouped together under the term 'behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia' (BPSD) by the International Psychogeriatiic Association (Douglas, James, & Ballard, 2004). Neuropsychiatric symptoms are often reasons for institutionalization in nursing homes due to increased burden and stress on the caregiver (Douglas, James & Clive, 2004; Murman et al, 2002). As the elderly population continues to grow, dementia and its related symptoms will remain …

Modern Airline Pilots Quandary : Standard Operating Procedures -- To Comply Or Not To Comply, Carrie Giles

Theses and Dissertations

Modern airline pilots are tasked every flight with the safe and efficient operation of highly automated airliners in today’s complicated global and economic environments. Airlines have developed standard operating procedures (SOP) for normal, abnormal, and emergency operations. These procedures serve as a script for crews to follow. These procedures are designed by airlines to ensure that aircraft are operated in the (1) most safe, (2) most efficient, and (3) most on-time manner. For the most part pilots will comply with SOP, but when they (1) don’t agree with SOP, (2) don’t understand SOP or the risks associated with not complying …

Implementation Of An Exercise Program In Assisted Living, Cherise A. Norby May 2011

Implementation Of An Exercise Program In Assisted Living, Cherise A. Norby

Theses and Dissertations

Assisted living facilities are increasingly becoming a popular option for aging individuals. One thing found lacking in these facilities is a structured exercise program. In a review of literature, it was found that strength training programs have resulted in an improvement in elders' functional performance. It has been shown that an older adult can successfully perform strength training exercises. Strength training exercises can add muscle, increase strength, and enhance the elders' flexibility. This improved functional performance plays a significant role in the elders' ability to maintain their independence with ADLs (activities of daily living), which may result in a better …

More than two dozen North Dakota K-12 schools begin each academic year with a school counselor designate because of state mandates for services in each building and a lack of qualified applicants to provide these services. School counselor designates are individuals who hold a North Dakota professional educator's license, have completed a minimum of sixteen graduate credits in school counseling from a state-approved program, and who have obtained a favorable letter of recommendation from the counselor designee's program of study advisor to begin practice in their respective building. Designates have traditionally come from the ranks of classroom teachers already working …

Translocation Effects Of Lcrv Extracellular Surface Residues And Regulation Of Lcrg Binding To The T3ss Of Yersinia Pestis, Thomas A. Henderson Apr 2011

Translocation Effects Of Lcrv Extracellular Surface Residues And Regulation Of Lcrg Binding To The T3ss Of Yersinia Pestis, Thomas A. Henderson

Theses and Dissertations

Yersinia pestis, the etiological agent of the plague, immobilizes the host's innate immune response by translocating proteins called Yops (Yersinia outer proteins) into the eukaryotic cytoplasm using a type III secretion system (T3SS) injectisome known as the Yersinia secretion complex (Ysc). The T3SS injectisome, in many ways, resembles a hypodermic needle, composed of oligomeric rings with distinct areas responsible for different functions and many of these areas share homology to the flagellar T3SS basal body inner and outer membrane rings. Starting with the cytoplasmic region of the inner membrane known as the C-ring, this is an area where secretion is …

Predictors Of Communication Delay In Children In The North Dakota Right Track Program, Carol A. Johnson Apr 2011

Predictors Of Communication Delay In Children In The North Dakota Right Track Program, Carol A. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Communication delays in infants and toddlers are significantly under- identified, prohibiting early intervention for many children and their families who might benefit from services. Recognizing communication delays early in life is critical for appropriate brain development to allow children to reach their potential. Researchers have sought to identify earlier and more accurate predictors of delays in communication development. Current approaches to the early identification of young children at risk for communication delay are not sufficiently sensitive to detect early stages of communication delay in all cases. There is a need to develop more sensitive methods for the early detection of …
