Predictors Of Communication Delay In Children In The North Dakota Right Track Program, Carol A. Johnson Apr 2011

Predictors Of Communication Delay In Children In The North Dakota Right Track Program, Carol A. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Communication delays in infants and toddlers are significantly under- identified, prohibiting early intervention for many children and their families who might benefit from services. Recognizing communication delays early in life is critical for appropriate brain development to allow children to reach their potential. Researchers have sought to identify earlier and more accurate predictors of delays in communication development. Current approaches to the early identification of young children at risk for communication delay are not sufficiently sensitive to detect early stages of communication delay in all cases. There is a need to develop more sensitive methods for the early detection of …

Development And Application Of Nanomaterials For Analysis And Energy-Related Catalysis, Aize Li Apr 2011

Development And Application Of Nanomaterials For Analysis And Energy-Related Catalysis, Aize Li

Theses and Dissertations

Nanocomposites combine the merits of two or more nanomaterials and their development is a rapidly growing field. Two inorganic materials, SiO2 and TiO2, have long served as adaptable nanomaterials due to their non-toxic properties, low cost, high thermal and chemical stability. The goals of the research reported in this dissertation were to develop some novel nanocomposites based on these two nanomaterials, and to test their applications in environmental analysis and energy-related catalysis. Silica-supported Pt and Pt/Ru nanocatalysts were prepared using a template synthesis and applied in a direct methanol fuel cell. Various techniques such as EDS, TEM, XRD, UV-vis, and …

Anesthesia Concerns With The Beach Chair Position, Jody Morlan Apr 2011

Anesthesia Concerns With The Beach Chair Position, Jody Morlan

Theses and Dissertations

The beach chair position has become a commonplace positioning technique for various procedures in the operating room. The purpose of this study was to review research related to the use of the beach chair position and general anesthesia along with the complications associated with it. There can be complications associated with this position that include venous air embolism, unrecognized cerebral hypoperfusion, blindness, and nerve injuries. The beach chair position causes many hemodynamic changes in the body; this is compounded when general anesthesia is used to further impact the stability of patients. Recent research has shown a death and three cases …

Evidence For The Need Of A Screening Tool To Recognize Perinatal Substance Abuse, Joeanna L. Larson Apr 2011

Evidence For The Need Of A Screening Tool To Recognize Perinatal Substance Abuse, Joeanna L. Larson

Theses and Dissertations

Perinatal substance abuse is a dangerous and detrimental problem faced by providers. Many questions arise when suspecting perinatal substance use. When is the appropriate time to screen? Are there clinical signs that providers can use to guide their decision? Is there the need for a tool that providers can use to guide their decisions? Screening for perinatal substance use is a difficult choice for providers. If a tool existed that would allow providers to screen for perinatal substance abuse based on clinical signs and symptoms, the judgment would lie in the evidence, and not with the provider. A screening tool …

Intimate Partner Violence In Rural Areas, Amanda J. Dudgeon Apr 2011

Intimate Partner Violence In Rural Areas, Amanda J. Dudgeon

Theses and Dissertations

Intimate partner violence is a major health care issue in the United States, affecting millions of women annually. The incidence and prevalence of intimate partner violence is essentially the same in rural areas as compared to non-rural; however, rural survivors are faced with barriers in obtaining help and services that non-rural survivors are not. Multiple mental and physical health problems are associated with intimate partner violence and billions of health care dollars are spent annually due to abuse. Nurses need to understand the problem of intimate partner violence and routinely screen all women for abuse. This article describes the unique …

Assertiveness Training: Reducing Burnout And Job Turnover In Newly Graduated Nurses, Jeanine M. Conner

Theses and Dissertations

Newly graduated nurses (NGNs) face a number of challenges during the first year of practice placing them at higher risk for burnout and job turnover. Because burnout has such serious implications for the nursing profession, a comprehensive review of the literature was completed focusing on the question: does participation in an assertiveness training program decrease the rate of burnout and job turnover for newly graduated nurses

Evidence shows that assertiveness is associated with increased job satisfaction, effective coping, autonomy, and nurse empowerment. Since these characteristics are significant factors in decreasing burnout and job turnover, the findings suggest that strategies to …

Honey In Healing: New Look At An Old Treatment, Tracy Jo Enger Apr 2011

Honey In Healing: New Look At An Old Treatment, Tracy Jo Enger

Theses and Dissertations

Chronic wounds such as pressure ulcers continue to be a difficult problem to manage, especially in the elderly populations. They are costly in terms of pain, as well as medical resources. The initiative Healthy People 2010 has set a goal at reducing the number of chronic wounds, more specifically pressure ulcers, by 50% in nursing home residents. (Porth & Matfin, 2009). Researchers are diligently attempting to find new, innovative, and cost-effective ways to manage chronic wounds. One solution may actually be an old remedy; honey. The purpose of this work is to provide healthcare workers with a review of the …

A Proposal For Introduction Of Geothermal Energy To The Energy Sector Of Bangladesh, Wafi Danesh, Sandip Bhowmick, Nomir Muktadir, Mohammad Alam

Electrical Engineering Student Publications

Due to the rapid industrialization over the last two decades, Bangladesh has witnessed a high demand for uninterrupted electricity, which keeps on increasing every day. With the power sector in Bangladesh beset by many infrastructural problems such as an inefficient transmission system, overdependence on natural gas reserves and a cumbersome decision making process for expansion of current power system to name a few, it has become the imperative to seek new energy sources that are relatively cheap, quick to set up and operate and have a low overall loss. The current energy demand stands at around 5,500 MW against a …

Slave Story: A Tale Of Recovery, Rule A. S. Hiuallah-Messiah Feb 2011

Slave Story: A Tale Of Recovery, Rule A. S. Hiuallah-Messiah

Theses and Dissertations

It is my opinion that we, as human, as living-beings, we are complex and complicated vessels of ambiguous intent. We exchange information, opinions, and experiences with friends, family, co-workers, and colleagues, sometimes agreeing—sometimes not. We communicate about ordinary and extraordinary things—school affairs, movies, sports, dances, catastrophes, and death. Those of us who can communicate easily, and pleasantly, well, we are popular, and justly so. Those of us who wish to, but for whatever reasons, cannot, are categorized and marginalized and oft-times ostracized. I am communicating, by writing this dissertation, using autoethnography as a method, as one whom, for whatever reasons, …

Studies In Organic Synthesis: Part I: Total Synthesis Of Plakortethers F And G Part Ii: Carbon-Hydrogen Insertion On Diazosulfones And Diazosulfonates, Jinu Philip John Feb 2011

Studies In Organic Synthesis: Part I: Total Synthesis Of Plakortethers F And G Part Ii: Carbon-Hydrogen Insertion On Diazosulfones And Diazosulfonates, Jinu Philip John

Theses and Dissertations

This work consists of two independent studies. The first part of the dissertation focuses on the total synthesis of two marine based natural products, Plakortether F and G which represent a class of non-peroxide derivatives of Plakortin related metabolites that are isolated from the Caribbean sponge Plakortis simplex. The selective cytotoxic activity of Plakortethers against the RAW 264-7 cell line (murine macrophage) makes them promising candidates for biological studies. A strategy utilizing desymmetrization of a C2 symmetric intermediate was proposed and demonstrated to be effective for the synthesis of the core of Plakortethers. Initially, the symmetric intermediate could only be …

Characterization Of Polar Carbonaceous Particulate Matter Using Liquid And Gas Chromatography With Mass Spectrometry, Josef Beranek Feb 2011

Characterization Of Polar Carbonaceous Particulate Matter Using Liquid And Gas Chromatography With Mass Spectrometry, Josef Beranek

Theses and Dissertations

Polar organic compounds, due to their reactivity, volatility, water-solubility and surface activity, may play a major role in the atmospheric chemical and physical processes. A significant portion of organic carbon (presumably polar) in atmospheric particulate matter (PM) has not been characterized due to the lack of sensitive analytical methods or inappropriate sample preparation. This dissertation, therefore, focuses on the development of analytical methods for a characterization of polar organic compounds that can be encountered in PM (e.g., aldehydes, carboxylic acids, high molecular weight compounds). In order to achieve a sensitive detection for aldehydes in PM, a method using chemical derivatization …
