Likewise, the development of new types of nanomaterials is still needed. In particular, there is high demand for new photosensitive nanomaterials for detection of trace amount of analytes. Therefore, this dissertation focuses on the development of new photosensitive nanomaterials, the study of their properties and the application of these nanomaterials in trace analysis. Two types of these nanomaterials were studied, zinc-induced fluorescent silica nanoparticles and gold nanorods. The synthesis and …

Examination Of Male Batterer Typology In An Upper Midwest Sample, Jay R. Phillippi Aug 2011

Examination Of Male Batterer Typology In An Upper Midwest Sample, Jay R. Phillippi

Theses and Dissertations

Interpersonal violence is a pervasive and costly problem in many domains in our society. The study of interpersonal violence has included the origins of battering behavior, impact on victims, batterer treatment, and treatment completion. Recently, researchers have focused on the taxonomy of batterers. There is now ample evidence that batterers are not a homogenous group. The consensus among researchers is identifying types could lead to effective treatments for each type; however the call for the application of typology to clinical intervention has not been effectively answered.

The purpose of this study was to examine male batterer types with the use …

Depressed Native Americans And Suicidal Ideation Contagion, Jeri Ann Azure Aug 2011

Depressed Native Americans And Suicidal Ideation Contagion, Jeri Ann Azure

Theses and Dissertations

Screening for suicide ideation has been widely established as an effective strategy to identify and treat depression symptomology and suicidality (ideation, attempts, and completions), particularly within vulnerable populations such as Native Americans, where the rates of these problems exceed that of other ethnic minority groups. Findings from global research has suggested that symptoms of depression increase vulnerability to self-harm among individuals exposed to the suicide attempts of others within their family or social network. Group membership appears to increase the likelihood that the individual will acquire both the adaptive and maladaptive beliefs and proclivities of the desired group.

The risk …

The North Dakota Brain Drain: Perceptions About Factors That Contribute To North Dakota's Outmigration Of Graduates, Nancy J. Bauer Aug 2011

The North Dakota Brain Drain: Perceptions About Factors That Contribute To North Dakota's Outmigration Of Graduates, Nancy J. Bauer

Theses and Dissertations

Graduates from the North Dakota University System (NDUS) choose either to remain in the state or leave for employment. This research explored factors that attract residents or contribute to the outmigration of NDUS college graduates from the graduates' perspectives. Data were gathered through an online questionnaire and qualitative interviews with the alumni.

Through inquiry of the graduates' opinions and experiences a better understanding of the outmigration factors emerged. Two prominent themes were identified: a perceived lack of professional level jobs affects NDUS graduates' decisions to leave North Dakota and a desire to be closer to family or to raise a …

Modelling Of Two Wheeler Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicles, Bhanuben Amrutlal Patel Jul 2011

Modelling Of Two Wheeler Fuel Cell Hybrid Vehicles, Bhanuben Amrutlal Patel

Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this work was to identify and specify the requirements of critical components of Proton Exchange Membrane (PEM) fuel cell systems in 2-wheeled vehicles. Specifically, mathematical simulation tools, Matlab, Simulink and ADVISOR were used to explore the viability of both a smaller than 10kW fuel cell and smaller than 10kW hybrid fuel cell scooter. Hydrogen, air, and water consumption as well as heat management were monitored under varying conditions in simulations. Efficiency of the overall system was found to be approximately 50% and highly dependent on the fuel cell auxiliary power source. Due to the existing fuel converter …

The Role Of Metallothionein-3 In The Regulation Of Cell Differentiation, Chandra Sekhar Bathula Jul 2011

The Role Of Metallothionein-3 In The Regulation Of Cell Differentiation, Chandra Sekhar Bathula

Theses and Dissertations

Metallothioneins, a group of low molecular weight, cysteine rich, intracellular proteins, are known to sequester heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd+2) and mercury and provide protection against their toxic effects. Previous studies from this laboratory have shown that the third isoform of metallothionein (MT-3) is expressed in the human kidney in situ, including the cultures of human proximal tubule (HPT) cells. The stable expression of MT-3 in the immortalized proximal tubule cell line that lacks its expression restored dome formation in these cells, suggesting that MT-3 may have a role in differentiation and vectorial active transport. This study further investigated …

Critical Components Of Suicide Prevention Programs For Colleges And Universities: A Delphi Study, Colleen A. Johnson Jun 2011

Critical Components Of Suicide Prevention Programs For Colleges And Universities: A Delphi Study, Colleen A. Johnson

Theses and Dissertations

Despite debate over whether or not college student suicide rates are greater or less than similar age groups not enrolled in higher education, the rates of college students experiencing suicide ideation, attempting suicide, and successfully committing suicide are indeed rising. A steady increase in these rates over the last 15 years is evidence that this is an issue of great concern that needs further investigation and action. This study was focused on investigating what college and university counseling center employees with expertise in the development and implementation of suicide prevention programs believe to be critical components of an all-encompassing, workable …

Theoretical Studies Of Reactions Of Fulminic Acid And Other Molecules Related To Nitric Oxide, Yvonne Bongfen Mbote May 2011

Theoretical Studies Of Reactions Of Fulminic Acid And Other Molecules Related To Nitric Oxide, Yvonne Bongfen Mbote

Theses and Dissertations

Possible mechanisms for the NCO + HCNO and OH + HCNO reactions were studied using the second-order generalized Van Vleck perturbation theory (GVVPT2). Equilibrium geometries were obtained at the B3LYP variant of density functional theory (DFT) and at the multiconfigurational self consistent field (MCSCF) level of theory. The ground states electronic structures of all eight doublet spin intermediates of the NCO + HCNO reaction are substantially multiconfigurational with maximum amplitudes not larger than 0.87. GVVPT2 calculations of vertical excitation energies of the intermediates showed that all the intermediates, except one, have significant excitation energies to both the same and other …
