Neuropsychiatric Profiles In Dementia, David K. Johnson, Amber S. Watts, Benjamin A. Chapin, Raeann E. Anderson, Jeffrey M. Burns
Neuropsychiatric Profiles In Dementia, David K. Johnson, Amber S. Watts, Benjamin A. Chapin, Raeann E. Anderson, Jeffrey M. Burns
Psychology Faculty Publications
We compared patterns of neuropsychiatric symptoms across 4 dementia types [Alzheimer disease (AD), vascular dementia (VAD), dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), and Parkinson disease dementia], and 2 mixed groups (AD/VAD and AD/DLB) in sample of 2,963 individuals from the National Alzheimer's Coordinating Center Uniform Data Set between September 2005 and June 2008. We used confirmatory factor analysis to compare neuropsychiatric symptom severity ratings made by collateral sources on the Neuropsychiatric Inventory Questionnaire for people with Clinical Dementia Rating scores of 1 or higher. A 3-factor model of psychiatric symptoms (mood, psychotic, and frontal) was shared across all dementia types. Between-group …

Parental Acceptance-Rejection Theory And Court-Involved Adolescent Females: An Exploration Of Parent-Child Relationships, Teacher-Student Relationships, And Adolescent Socio-Emotional Functioning, Kathleen S. Tillman
Theses and Dissertations
Although the current literature provides a limited description of court-involved adolescent females, research that examines their unique characteristics is scarce and fails to adequately address the psychological, developmental, and interpersonal needs of these young women (Calhoun, Jurgens, & Chen, 1993; Girls Study Group, 2008). Consequently, the purpose of the current study was twofold. First, the study sought to understand court-involved adolescents' experiences with mental illness and maternal, paternal, and teacher rejection. Second, the study sought to examine whether the assumptions of the Parental Acceptance-Rejection Theory (PARTheory) could be applied to understand predictors and correlates of social and emotional functioning among …

A Road Map For Leadership Driven Systemic Change In Interscholastic Athletic Programs, Thomas Craig Perry
Theses and Dissertations
The relationship between the leadership services of the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) and the leadership needs of the MSHSL members provides an opportunity for the MSHSL to create systemic change which, when implemented, should prove to be effective for the members' future management of their interscholastic programs. The purpose of the study was twofold: 1. to identify the importance MSHSL members place on existing leadership programs, resources, and services available for use by each MSHSL member school; and 2. to identify the leadership styles currently being used by interscholastic athletic directors.Data were gathered from two separate surveys. The …

Leadership Approaches Of Selected Chief Academic Officers In Rural Community Colleges, Kent Hanson
Leadership Approaches Of Selected Chief Academic Officers In Rural Community Colleges, Kent Hanson
Theses and Dissertations
Rural community colleges face many challenges, especially during times of diminished state funding and calls for greater accountability. The Chief Academic Officer (CAO) leads the academic enterprise of the institution and is responsible for setting the overall direction for program and course delivery. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the leadership approaches of rural community college chief academic officers. The following research questions were addressed: How do rural community college chief academic officers perceive their leadership approaches? To what extent does Situational Leadership Theory II (SLT II) apply to rural community college chief academic officers as they …

It's Not About Me: College Women And Unplanned Pregnancy, Jayne W. Hardy
It's Not About Me: College Women And Unplanned Pregnancy, Jayne W. Hardy
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the experiences of single college women who had an unplanned pregnancy while attending a small private four-year university in the upper midwest. The conceptual framework used to provide direction for this study was social constructivism. A phenomenological approach was used to seek the reality constructed by the participants and develop subjective meaning from their experiences. The participants were all students who attended the same university and all had delivered their baby prior to the first interview. The audio-recorded interviews were transcribed and then analyzed for codes, categories, and themes. The following …

Alleviating Equines: Investigating The Hypothesized Mechanisms Of Change In Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, Kathy L. Korell-Rach
Alleviating Equines: Investigating The Hypothesized Mechanisms Of Change In Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, Kathy L. Korell-Rach
Theses and Dissertations
Animal Assisted Therapy research was integrated to develop the Tri-Level Mechanisms of Change (TLMC) Conceptualization, which is a comprehensive theoretical framework hypothesizing how Equine Assisted Psychotherapy produces psychological change. TLMC hypothesizes that the strength of human animal bond (HAB) with personal pets accounts for the development of HAB with therapy horses (primary level). The quality of HAB with therapy horses is responsible for producing changes in general psychological constructs (secondary level). Adaptive changes in secondary level constructs account for reductions in mental illness symptoms (tertiary level). Results indicated a significant reduction in tertiary level symptoms, and gains were maintained at …
Non-Suicidal Self-Injury In The Transgender Community, Lore M. Dickey
Non-Suicidal Self-Injury In The Transgender Community, Lore M. Dickey
Theses and Dissertations
Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) has been increasing in clinical as well as non- clinical populations in recent years. There are few published reports of the investigation of this behavior in the transgender community. An online and paper and pencil survey was administered to transgender individuals over the course of six months. A total 977 people responded to the survey. Results indicated that 41.8 percent of the participants have a history of engaging in non-suicidal self-injury. Self-injury rates were significantly higher among female-to-male (FTM) participants than among male-to-female (MTF) participants. Further, individuals who have been prevented from transitioning were more likely to …
Factors Predicting Exercise Behavior Of Graduate Students, Bibha Gautam
Factors Predicting Exercise Behavior Of Graduate Students, Bibha Gautam
Theses and Dissertations
Graduate school is often experienced as a time of increased demands/expectations resulting in heightened levels of stress due to academic work, family responsibilities, job demands, financial pressure, and other life related issues. Besides stress, graduate school also brings about significant physical inactivity due to the shift of the immediate priority to academic accomplishment. Reports of increasing prevalence of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors among students highlight that this group may have particular risk not well-identified. Yet, relative risk can be reduced by lifestyle modifications, such as eating well, exercising, and stress reduction. The majority of the risk factors, to a …
Exploring The Paths To Homelessness: An Ethnographic Study Of How Disability, Educational Achievement, Gender, Foster Care And Poverty Impacted The Lives Of Two Towns' Homeless Shelter Residents, Sandra Arnau-Dewar
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study explored and described the lived experiences of residents of two homeless shelters located in the Upper Midwest. Through testimonies of participants, common themes associated with homelessness were revealed, such as disability, domestic violence, food shortages, foster care, insecure housing, and poor educational achievement. Since education, or a lack thereof, sometimes played a part in the residents’ inability to make a living wage, participants were queried about their schooling.
The public has a tendency to blame homeless people for their condition and assume that their plight is self-imposed due to substance abuse and a refusal to work (Diversi …
