Family Presence During Resuscitation And Invasive Procedures In The Emergency Department: Formal Policy Creation Through Education, Kim Wangen
Theses and Dissertations
The nature of this study was to provide best evidence available for patients, patient's families, and health care providers regarding family presence during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and/or invasive procedures (IPs) in the emergency department of a small, non-teaching hospital that is part of a large medical organization for development and implementation of formal family presence policy guidelines
A comprehensive, computerized, literature search of research-based articles from CJNAHL, PubMed, Cochrane Library, and PsycINFO were reviewed with Kokab's Theory of Comfort providing the theoretical framework as a conceptual basis

Streamlining Patient's Wishes: Analyzing Improvements For The Implementation Of Advance Directives, William A. Wallington
Streamlining Patient's Wishes: Analyzing Improvements For The Implementation Of Advance Directives, William A. Wallington
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to complete a review of literature and determine methods providers can use to increase the implementation rates of advance directives (ADs). A growing elderly population coupled with an increase in chronic disease is making the implementation of advance directives more important than ever, yet the percentage of completed advance directives continues to be poor. Utilizing a review of evidence-based research, barriers to implementation were identified. This includes communication, timing and setting, appropriate end-of-life care and utilization of Provider Order for Life Sustaining Treatment (POLST) to provide a detailed format therefore lessening miscommunication. A pamphlet …

The Impact Of Diet And Exercise On Depression., Lindsey M. Peterson
The Impact Of Diet And Exercise On Depression., Lindsey M. Peterson
Theses and Dissertations
Multiple treatment options are available for mood disorders like depression. Controversy surrounds utilizing healthy living interventions such as diet modification and physical activity as a possibility. A literature review was conducted with an aim to decipher if healthy lifestyle interventions and modifications are beneficial in the treatment of depressive disorders. The Transtheoretical Model was the conceptual framework followed. Results were inconclusive calling for more research regarding diet modification while exercise revealed to be a possible protective factor against developing a depressive disorder. Further research is necessary to close the gap regarding the possibility there is a link between depressive symptoms …

Depression And Dementia, Tom Johnson
Depression And Dementia, Tom Johnson
Theses and Dissertations
Depression and dementia are otlen co-morbid conditions. The assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of these conditions is difficult, as each condition has symptoms associated with the other condition. Antidepressants are often used to treat the conditions when occurring comorbidly, but this has been questioned in recent years. This paper will utilize a literature review for evidence-based tools to provide the most beneficial clinical outcomes. Areas for further research or attention on this topic include determining whether depression can be diagnosed distinctly in Alzheimer's disease (AD) and what treatments are safe and effective for depression in AD. The results of this study …
Educational Intervention To Promote And Facilitate Smoking Cessation In Pregnant Women, Jessica Stadick
Educational Intervention To Promote And Facilitate Smoking Cessation In Pregnant Women, Jessica Stadick
Theses and Dissertations
Smoking during pregnancy is the single most preventable and modifiable risk factor that is responsible for poor maternal and fetal outcomes, yet it remains a major public health problem. Despite the abundance of well-known risk factors and adverse health outcomes associated with maternal smoking, many women continue to smoke during pregnancy. Maternal smoking is responsible for low birth weight babies, preterm deliveries, and sudden infant death syndrome and long term chronic health conditions of the child. During pregnancy women have an increased desire to quit smoking and health care providers need to take advantage of this opportune time and help …

Research Based Findings Of Anti-Depressant Therapy And Suicidality, Melissa Goldschmidt
Research Based Findings Of Anti-Depressant Therapy And Suicidality, Melissa Goldschmidt
Theses and Dissertations
Anti-depressant therapy is one of the most common treatments for depression. However, the increasing criticism regarding anti-depressant therapy and increased suicidality has caused both health care providers and the public to question their widespread use (Lader, 2007). In October 2004, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) mandated that a black box warning be added to anti-depressant medications in order to alert patients of increased risk of suicidal thoughts in the pediatric and adolescent population. This black box warning was expanded further to include patients between 18 to 24 years-of-age at the direction of the FDA in May of 2007 (Friedman …

A Guide To Seasonal Migration: Increasing Snowbirds' Longevity, Stephanie Haselkamp, Jenny Styles
Occupational Therapy Capstones
With the demographic shift of the aging population within the United States, and the push for preventative healthcare measures, occupational therapy (OT) practitioners need to adjust the way they are delivering their services to best meet this growing population's needs. Falls prevention is a method for occupational therapists to get involved in preventative care. The need for preventing falls is further supported by the concept of aging-in-place. Aging-in-place is popular amongst the older population, as older adults often wish to remain in their homes and natural contexts for as long as possible. Homes can come in many different forms; and …

Sexual Fluidity And Women's Bisexual Identity Development, Julijana Draganic
Sexual Fluidity And Women's Bisexual Identity Development, Julijana Draganic
Theses and Dissertations
Experiences of bisexual and sexual fluid women are poorly explored and understood in the current literature. While there is a need and interest in the exploration of bisexual experiences in the current literature, these experiences are usually lumped together with the experiences of lesbian women, who are vastly overrepresented in the participant samples. Data was collected from LGBT centers, women's centers, bisexual interest listservs, and sexual minority internet groups. This study examined: the relationship between a measure of fluidity in attractions, the Sexual Fluidity Grid (SFG) and a measure of sexual orientation, the Klein Sexual Orientation Grid; the relationship between …
A Social Ecological Approach To Cyber Bullying, Brett Holfeld
A Social Ecological Approach To Cyber Bullying, Brett Holfeld
Theses and Dissertations
Advancements in technology in the past decade have corresponded with the emergence of a new form of bullying called cyber bullying or bullying through the use of technology. The Social Ecological Model was used as a guide to examine the development of cyber bullying through the dynamic interactions between adolescents and their social environment (i.e., peer group, family, and school). The main goal of the study was to examine the perceptions and attributions of bystanders to cyber bullying. A scenario was constructed that described a hypothetical middle school students' experience with cyber bullying. Middle school participants (N = 1,151) were …
The Experience Of Family Resilience Through Severe Traumatic Brain Injury, Shanda C.E. Hochstetler
The Experience Of Family Resilience Through Severe Traumatic Brain Injury, Shanda C.E. Hochstetler
Theses and Dissertations
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a leading cause of death and disability. Of these injuries, severe TBI (STBI) causes the most profound and long-term disabilities. The experience of STBI has been shown to affect the entire family. Social work professionals need to be aware of the experience of STBI and must be prepared support families through this trauma. The objective in this research was to explore how families experience STBI through the lens of family resilience. A mixed method approach, focused predominantly on the qualitative, was used to draw out the experience of five families wherein a child sustained an …
