Class Is Out: Mental Health Professionals' Social Class Identification And Classist Attitudes Toward Low-Income Clients, Kipp Ryan Pietrantonio
Theses and Dissertations
Social class as a variable of culturally competent psychology remains a misunderstood and understudied phenomenon. This study was designed to explore how mental health providers’ social class of origin and classist attitudes impact their beliefs and treatment of clients from different economic backgrounds. This was accomplished by exploring five domains across two vignettes that varied in SES indicators (Low-‐Income vs. Middle Class Vignette). The domains of study included classist beliefs, GAF scores with or without treatment over time, positive and negative stereotype endorsement, perceptions of the therapeutic relationship, and potential treatment modalities. Clinicians did not rate the vignettes differently in …

Exploring The Marital Conflict Of Police Officers: The Roles Of Job Stress, Job Burnout, And Work-To-Family Conflict, Shannon Marie Morley
Theses and Dissertations
Previous scholarship suggests that the nature of policing is stressful and has important implications for the marital quality of police officers. Given the stresses inherent in policing, the purpose of this study is to examine how job stress, job burnout, and work-to-family conflict experienced by male and female police officers impact the likelihood of experiencing marital conflict; the potential mediating role of work-to-family conflict is also examined. This thesis also explores gender differences that may exist in the experience of these variables. Data from the 1995 Work and Family Services for Law Enforcement Personnel in the United States study was …

Pet Therapy And The Associated Benefits On The Elderly, Lindsey Senger
Pet Therapy And The Associated Benefits On The Elderly, Lindsey Senger
Theses and Dissertations
Pet therapy (also known as Animal Assisted Therapy {AAT}) today involves both human and animal interactions. Pet therapy is utilized most commonly with the elderly living in Long Term Care (LTC) facilities or assisted living facilities to promote health and healing for the patients. It is especially beneficial for those who are chronically ill, may suffer from disabilities or may have depression. The feeling of isolation and loneliness that accompanies depression is not healthy, especially for the elderly population. Research has shown that the health and well-being of the elderly who suffer from depression, decline rapidly when compared to those …

Self Management In Heart Failure Education, Michelle Brown
Self Management In Heart Failure Education, Michelle Brown
Theses and Dissertations
Heart failure is a growing health problem in the United States, costing the healthcare system billions of dollars and having a significant impact on patients' quality of life. To improve heart failure outcomes and reduce associated costs, we must educate patients to properly manage their disease condition. Traditionally, this patient education takes place during a standard office visit with a provider. However, in a self-management program, the provider, through individualized education, empowers the patient to become an active participant in their care. The purpose of this literature review was to explore the effect of self management programs, in comparison to …

Review Of The Efficacy Of Titratable Oral Mandibular Advancement Devices For The Treatment Of Obstructive Sleep Apnea, Illara Moore
Theses and Dissertations
Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is prevalent throughout the United States and worldwide, and is associated with cardiovascular, pulmonary, and metabolic complications. Despite the strong evidence confining its clinical sequelae, significant barriers to clinical diagnosis and treatment of OSA exist, including under-diagnosis by medical providers and poor patient compliance with CPAP therapy-the current treatment of choice
The purpose of this project was to review the literature of mandibular advancement devices (MADs) as an efficacious alternative treatment for OSA. Randomized controlled trials demonstrate that CPAP is superior in reducing the Apnea-Hypopnea Index, but MADs show a similar impact on daytime sleepiness and …

Utilizing Goal Attainment Concepts To Empower Nursing Students For Effective Interprofessional Communication, Andrea M. Nelson
Theses and Dissertations
Ineffective interprofessional communication is an identified issue affecting patient safety in health care. A multitude of barriers can impact interactions between and among disciplines leading to relationship strain and adverse patient outcomes. Nursing and other health care professions have limited curricular focus on interdisciplinary communication and collaboration. Interventions to improve interprofessional teamwork and collaboration are important foci for students in the health care profession. A learning event with the goal of student development of effective interdisciplinary communication was delivered to a group of nursing students in the classroom setting. King's Theory of Goal Attainment (1981) and interacting systems framed the …
Mass Chlamydia Screening Vs. Opportunistic Screening In College Freshmen, Amanda E. Allmaras
Mass Chlamydia Screening Vs. Opportunistic Screening In College Freshmen, Amanda E. Allmaras
Theses and Dissertations
Chlamydia trachomatis is the number one sexually transmitted disease in the United States and North Dakota. It has seen a steady rise in the past 10 years. Chlamydia is a preventable and treatable disease but the current lack of sufficient screening and identification of this disease often leads to many health consequences. Standard USPSTF screening guidelines are available for practitioners but despite the use of recommended opportunistic screening with patients, only about 3 8% of females ages 15-25 years are being screened appropriately and there is even less identification in males. There is growing literature on the efficacy of using …
