The Role Of Individual Differences In Young Adults' Responses To Graphic Health Harms Anti-Tobacco Media, Harpa Lind Jonsdottir Jan 2013

The Role Of Individual Differences In Young Adults' Responses To Graphic Health Harms Anti-Tobacco Media, Harpa Lind Jonsdottir

Theses and Dissertations

Tobacco use is the most preventable cause of overall mortality. The highest smoking rate, about 30%, in the U.S. is among young adults between the ages of 18 and 25 years. Anti-tobacco media campaigns appear to be effective in preventing and reducing tobacco use, although little is known about how individual differences affect responses to anti-tobacco media. Participants were 144 students at the University of North Dakota. They watched six anti-tobacco advertisements that contained fear messages but varied in levels of graphic imagery. The following was measured: tobacco experience, self-control, locus of control, depression, stress, affect, arousal, valence, and effectiveness. …

Utilization Of Emotional Freedom Techniques (Eft) To Reduce Test Anxiety In High Stakes Testing, Marie Elaine Mohler Jan 2013

Utilization Of Emotional Freedom Techniques (Eft) To Reduce Test Anxiety In High Stakes Testing, Marie Elaine Mohler

Theses and Dissertations

There are many reasons a person may fail a high stakes test such as the National Council Licensure Examination for Registered Nurses (NCLEX-RN®). Sleep deprivation, illness, life stressors, knowledge deficit, and test anxiety are some of the common explanations. A student with test anxiety may feel threatened by this evaluation process. This reaction causes the students to become self-absorbed with altered cognitive abilities such as reduced ability: to concentrate, to remember, and/or to retrieve information, thus lowering the students' performance. This research study explored the correlation among factors such as stress, test anxiety, and student expectations that may be predictive …

Improving The Palmer Drought Severity Index By Incorporating Snow And Frozen Ground, Shaoyue Qiu Jan 2013

Improving The Palmer Drought Severity Index By Incorporating Snow And Frozen Ground, Shaoyue Qiu

Theses and Dissertations

Drought causes extensive damage and affects a significant number of people. To quantify the severity of drought and to better monitor drought, drought indices are necessary. The Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) has its advantages of comprehensive and taking the characteristics of drought into concern so that it was regarded as the milestone in the revolution of drought indices (Heim, 2002). The PDSI has been widely used, tested, and modified since its development in 1965. However, a commonly documented limitation to this index is the lack of consideration for snow and the treatment of ground status. In this study, a …

Crew Training Requirements For Long Duration Missions, Ann Wargetz Jan 2013

Crew Training Requirements For Long Duration Missions, Ann Wargetz

Theses and Dissertations

After reviewing the journals of astronauts, cosmonauts, and others who lived and worked in confinement, a new pre-mission training approach for missions in confinement was developed. This new training approach is founded on the idea that conflicts in confinement often arise due to humanity's propensity to focus on how others behave rather than our own behavior. After reviewing the stresses experienced during spaceflight and astronaut training and selection methods, a survey was written and distributed to researchers with experience living and working in confined environments. The questions sought to discover whether conflicts arise for these reasons based on the participant's …

Effects Of Parental Support On Physical Activity Levels In Children, Julie Ann Caspers Jan 2013

Effects Of Parental Support On Physical Activity Levels In Children, Julie Ann Caspers

Theses and Dissertations

Introduction: The literature is mixed regarding behavioral methods that may effectively motivate children to increase physical activity levels. Because some research has shown parental influence can affect children's behavior, it is hypothesized that trained parental support may increase children's physical activity.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of parental support on children's physical activity. Pender's Health Promotion Model (HPM) served as a guide. The theoretical underpinnings of this model are based on the assumption that individuals are influenced by interpersonal factors such as parental support.

Molecular Simulation For Neurodegenerative Diseases: From Modelling Alpha-Synuclein In Aqueous Solutions To Drug Delivery Systems, Erica Ann Hicks

Theses and Dissertations

Using computer simulations, we developed a better understanding of some key chemical steps of alpha-synuclein aggregation as well as amantadine for drug delivery systems. The aggregation and fibrillation of alpha-synuclein, a brain protein of 140 residues, has been linked to several neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson's and Alzheimer's diseases. Using molecular dynamics, alpha-synuclein, at various temperatures of 293 K, 310 K, 323 K and 348 K, was shown to undergo rapid conformational change. The non-amyloid- β component (NAC) of alpha-synuclein that is not sterically hindered is suspected to undergo aggregation.

Amantadine has been shown to help regulate the symptoms of Parkinson's …

Research into childhood development has shown that the impacts of a traumatic life event can have adverse effects on the development and future success of a child. Traumatic live events can be defined as any experience that varies from a typical pattern of childhood development, for example divorce, death of a parent, addiction concerns, domestic violence, or incarceration of a parent. Often a positive role model cannot be found in these children’s lives, keeping them from reaching success later in life. Researchers have studied the impact of a mentoring relationship on children from disadvantaged homes and have found the mentoring …
