Transforming Evidence-Based Clinical Obesity Guidelines Into Practice: A Literature Review, Kristin Erickson
Theses and Dissertations
Evidence-based clinical obesity guidelines have been published in the United States by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the National 1-lemt Lung and Blood Institute (NHLBI), the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF), and the Institute for Clinical Systems Improvement (ICSI), and in the United Kingdom by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence (NICE). The first federal clinical obesity guidelines were published by the NI-ILBI in 1998 (Schuster, Tasosa, & Terwoord, 2008). Unfortunately America's health care system seems to have distanced itself from addressing, let alone implementing evidence-based guidelines related …

Maggot Therapy Versus Conventional Debridement: A Literature Review, Rebecca A. Vigen
Theses and Dissertations
Maggot debridement therapy (MDT) is one of the oldest treatment regimens used for healing infectious and chronic wounds. The literature review will identify what research is available to support the use of medical maggots over the use of conventional debridement in the treatment of chronic wounds.
The methodology used for the review of the literature began with a systematic review of electronic database. Key words used in the search were (1) maggot debridement therapy, (2) wound debridement, and (3) larval therapy. Prospective, retrospective, and case studies from January 2003 to January 2013 that discussed maggot therapy and/or conventional sharp debridement …

Pet Therapy And The Associated Benefits On The Elderly, Lindsey Senger
Pet Therapy And The Associated Benefits On The Elderly, Lindsey Senger
Theses and Dissertations
Pet therapy (also known as Animal Assisted Therapy {AAT}) today involves both human and animal interactions. Pet therapy is utilized most commonly with the elderly living in Long Term Care (LTC) facilities or assisted living facilities to promote health and healing for the patients. It is especially beneficial for those who are chronically ill, may suffer from disabilities or may have depression. The feeling of isolation and loneliness that accompanies depression is not healthy, especially for the elderly population. Research has shown that the health and well-being of the elderly who suffer from depression, decline rapidly when compared to those …

Exploring The Marital Conflict Of Police Officers: The Roles Of Job Stress, Job Burnout, And Work-To-Family Conflict, Shannon Marie Morley
Theses and Dissertations
Previous scholarship suggests that the nature of policing is stressful and has important implications for the marital quality of police officers. Given the stresses inherent in policing, the purpose of this study is to examine how job stress, job burnout, and work-to-family conflict experienced by male and female police officers impact the likelihood of experiencing marital conflict; the potential mediating role of work-to-family conflict is also examined. This thesis also explores gender differences that may exist in the experience of these variables. Data from the 1995 Work and Family Services for Law Enforcement Personnel in the United States study was …
Class Is Out: Mental Health Professionals' Social Class Identification And Classist Attitudes Toward Low-Income Clients, Kipp Ryan Pietrantonio
Class Is Out: Mental Health Professionals' Social Class Identification And Classist Attitudes Toward Low-Income Clients, Kipp Ryan Pietrantonio
Theses and Dissertations
Social class as a variable of culturally competent psychology remains a misunderstood and understudied phenomenon. This study was designed to explore how mental health providers’ social class of origin and classist attitudes impact their beliefs and treatment of clients from different economic backgrounds. This was accomplished by exploring five domains across two vignettes that varied in SES indicators (Low-‐Income vs. Middle Class Vignette). The domains of study included classist beliefs, GAF scores with or without treatment over time, positive and negative stereotype endorsement, perceptions of the therapeutic relationship, and potential treatment modalities. Clinicians did not rate the vignettes differently in …
Aicd: A Little Shocking To Your Emotional Health, Lindsay M. Olson
Aicd: A Little Shocking To Your Emotional Health, Lindsay M. Olson
Theses and Dissertations
The treatment of choice for ventricular arrhythmias (VA) and the prevention of sudden cardiac death (SCD) is an Internal Cardioverter Defibrillator (ICD) (Burke, Hallas, Clark-Carter, Whitel, & Connelly, 2003). ICDs are surgically implanted and automatically discharge a 25-35 joule electrical shock directly to the heart if a VA is sensed to convert the heart back to a normal rhythm (Keren, Aaron, & Veltri, 1991). ICDs save people’s lives, yet they can also cause an increased amount of emotional stress, mainly anxiety.
A literature review was conducted to evaluate the emotional impacts of the ICD implantation, shock therapy, and the patient’s …

Mentoring To Transition And Retain The New Graduate Nurse, Carla Robillard
Theses and Dissertations
The new graduate Registered Nurse faces not only the challenge of role transition, but also must meet high performance expectations with increasing patient workloads and patient acuity levels. Feeling unprepared, stressed, and frustrated, the new graduate nurse has an increased rate of nurse burnout and dissatisfaction leading to job turnover.
Recruitment and training is costly to 3 organizations, so employers need to be aware of strategies to retain the new graduate Registered Nurse. A review of current literature strongly indicated that mentor programs are a successful way to retain, recruit, and develop satisfied, competent nurses. Mentoring allows the opportunity for …

Cultural Considerations For Education Strategies Regarding Native American Adults With Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, Alissa Hoban
Theses and Dissertations
The management of type 2 diabetes mellitus in Native American adults can pose challenges for both the provider and the patient. This issue is one that has been long-standing and requires extensive education and investigation into the best management techniques for appropriate care to enhance self-management. Many Native American adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus have difficulties related to self-management of their disease, and effective education and teachings for this population have yet to be solidified within clinical practice. This project entailed an extensive review of literature, which demonstrated a need for culturally congruent diabetes education to be used within …
Tertiary Hospital Management Of Patients With Acute Myocardial Infarction, Anne Ford
Tertiary Hospital Management Of Patients With Acute Myocardial Infarction, Anne Ford
Theses and Dissertations
In the tertiary care setting, there is a gap in the recommended door-to-balloon time of less than 90 minutes when treating a patient with an acute myocardial infarction (AMI). Data show significantly decreased mortality when percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is initiated within 90 minutes of the onset of an AMI. According to an Institute of Healthcare Improvement (IHI) report, there are recommended interventions with goals for door-to-balloon times (Mayo Clinic, 2011 ). Tertiary hospitals frequently transport their AMI patients out to a specialty cardiac center. These patients typically do not receive the recommended PCI and the delay in treatment increases …

Streamlining Patient's Wishes: Analyzing Improvements For The Implementation Of Advance Directives, William A. Wallington
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to complete a review of literature and determine methods providers can use to increase the implementation rates of advance directives (ADs). A growing elderly population coupled with an increase in chronic disease is making the implementation of advance directives more important than ever, yet the percentage of completed advance directives continues to be poor. Utilizing a review of evidence-based research, barriers to implementation were identified. This includes communication, timing and setting, appropriate end-of-life care and utilization of Provider Order for Life Sustaining Treatment (POLST) to provide a detailed format therefore lessening miscommunication. A pamphlet …
