Chlamydia infections within the United States have increased nationally. Most recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2013) indicate that in 2001 the chlamydia rates for women were 429.6/100,000 population …

Postpartum Management Of Women With Gestational Diabetes, Brittany R. Tovar

Theses and Dissertations

This case report highlights the importance of postpartum glucose screening, along with diabetes prevention education, for women with history of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Gestational diabetes is a strong indicator of future type 2 diabetes. Postpartum screening allows providers opportunity for early detection of abnormal glucose levels in this vulnerable population (Frazzita, Anderson & Egan, 2013). Clinical practice guidelines establish routine postpartum care that include close monitoring of women with GDM. However, screening rates are as low as 33% among providers (Bihan et al., 2014; Hunt, Logan, Conway & Korte, 2010; Kapustin, 2008). The case description depicted in this paper …

Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRis) are first line medications for the treatment of depression. Pharmacological and clinical studies have identified slight differences in the profile of each SSRI, giving them unique advantages for use in comorbid conditions such as anxiety, …

Dialectical Behavior Therapy For Borderline Personality Disorders, Julie Nohre

Theses and Dissertations

Often individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) suffer from emotion dysregulation: uncontrollable mood swings, impaired thought processes, impulsive and reckless behaviors, and chaotic relationships (National Institute of Mental Health, 2012) thus impairing their functional abilities and their quality oflife. There is no known cause at this time; however, researchers suggest that genetics, abnormal brain development, and environment play a major factor the development of a BPD. Not only is the individual affected but also those who surround the patient such as families, fiiends, society, health care professionals, and community providers. The constant maladaptive behaviors often lead to minimal supports thus …

Promoting Parenting Success In Parents With Intellectual Disabilities, Beth S. Juarez

Theses and Dissertations

Persons with intellectual disabilities (ID) who choose to become parents typically encounter significant ban·iers and challenges that too often have less to do with parental competency, and more to do with context1ml factors, stereotypes and perceptions, lack of access to support services, social policy and unjust treatment by child welfare systems. These inequities have historically contributed to an increased risk of harm for both parents and children, including preventable separation of families. With support, parents with ID can and do parent successfully and nurses can play an important role in promoting this success. This review of the current literature describes …

Diagnostic Strategies For Gout, Rebekah Aakre Mar 2014

Diagnostic Strategies For Gout, Rebekah Aakre

Theses and Dissertations

Gout is a complex form of arthritis and is commonly seen and treated by the primary care provider. When a swollen, red, inflamed metatarsophalangeal joint is seen on exam it is easy to jump to the conclusion of a diagnosis of gout. A single clinical finding of gout is not enough information to diagnose gout. It is important to know what type of fluid is causing the inflamed joint in order to treat it appropriately. A literature search was conducted using the Harley French Library at the University of North Dakota. The author began the search by using two of …

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (20 I 0) , I in IO American adults suffer from depression. The effects of depression can lead to a decrease in quality of life, poor health behaviors , and potentially self harm. Though effective, these treatments take time to become effective, have potential adverse side effects, and often end in poor adherence. With this in mind, the present review paper explored research into the benefits of exercise for the reduction of depressive symptoms with …

Effective Screening For Postpartum Depression, Joshua M. Petron Mar 2014

Effective Screening For Postpartum Depression, Joshua M. Petron

Theses and Dissertations

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a clinical disorder that is very difficult to diagnose. In fact, research indicates that many providers are not screening PPD accurately during perinatal and postpartum pe1iods. A clinical case study presented by the author, conducted a postpartum visit with a 25-year-old mother who had risk factors for PPD and evidence suggestive of PPD at her postpartum visit. The provider however, did not utilize effective assessment tools when assessing the mother for PPD; therefore, the diagnosis was not made. A literature review was conducted using the CINAHL database looking at the interventions to effectively assess for PPD. …

People with serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia are estimated to smoke at …
