The Use Of Thiazolidinediones In Type 2 Diabetic Patients, Amanda Weidler May 2014

The Use Of Thiazolidinediones In Type 2 Diabetic Patients, Amanda Weidler

Theses and Dissertations

The care and management of type 2 diabetic patients has been the topic of many research studies. Diabetes is a disease that affects around 34 7 million people worldwide and continues to be a significant cause of morbidity and mortality in this population. The cardiovascular risk that has been linked to the use of thiazolidinediones, as part of the treatment regimen, is a trepidation that continues to lead healthcare providers to question its usefulness in pharmacotherapeutics. There has been much controversy over the risks versus the benefits. The case report in this paper outlines a patient with uncontrolled diabetes and …

Implementing The Use Of Tranexamic Acid In The Acute Traumatically Injury Patient, Erin Beck May 2014

Implementing The Use Of Tranexamic Acid In The Acute Traumatically Injury Patient, Erin Beck

Theses and Dissertations

Every year, traumatic injury accounts for more than five million deaths, and millions of more hospitalizations and emergency department visits worldwide. If the trauma patient does reach the hospital, more than half of those die from hemorrhage (Roberts, Shakur, Coats, et al., 2013) .

A review of literature was performed to evaluate the use of TXA in the traumatically injured patient experiencing hemorrhage or at significant risk for hemorrhage. It was concluded the use of TXA was indicated in this patient population, and the implementation of its use in the acute care setting was appropriate.

The Theory of Symptom Management …

Examining The Role Of Motivation In The Relationship Between Perceived Academic Stress And Coping Among Freshmen, Ying Dong May 2014

Examining The Role Of Motivation In The Relationship Between Perceived Academic Stress And Coping Among Freshmen, Ying Dong

Theses and Dissertations

First-year college students commonly face academic stress that is negatively associated with academic achievement and persistence. It has been found that problem-focused coping (PFC) effectively decreases stress, but emotion-focused coping (EFC) exacerbates stressful situations in the long term (Carver & Scheier, 1994; Kim & Duda, 2003). Lazarus and Folkman’s (1984) Transactional Model of Stress and Coping (TMSC) posits that cognitive appraisals determine the selection of stress coping. In the current study, two motivation indicators, causal attributions for academic stress and value of college education, were recognized as cognitive appraisals that were respectively placed into the TMSC to test their role …

An Analysis Of Students' Perceptions To Just Culture In The Aviation Industry: A Study Of A Midwest Aviation Training Program (Case Study), Lazo Akram Mohammad

Theses and Dissertations

The research will focus on the discussion of the ways in which the top-down nature of Safety Management Systems (SMS) can be used to create „Just Culture‟ within the aviation industry. Specific focus will be placed on an aviation program conducted by an accredited university, with the institution in focus being the midwest aviation training program. To this end, a variety of different aspects of safety culture in aviation and aviation management will be considered. The focus on the implementation strategies vital for the existence of a „Just Culture‟ within the aviation industry in general, and particularly within the aforementioned …

The Potential Benefits Of Statins In The Management Of Stable Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Angela K. Gaikowski May 2014

The Potential Benefits Of Statins In The Management Of Stable Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease, Angela K. Gaikowski

Theses and Dissertations

Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a group of irreversible, progressive, and debilitating respiratory conditions of chronic airflow limitation, including chronic bronchitis and emphysema. The condition develops secondary to an abnormal inflammatory response of the lungs to noxious environment particles or gases, such as tobacco smoke or outdoor, occupational, and indoor air pollution. A diagnosis of COPD should be considered in all patients with symptoms of progressive dyspnea, chronic cough, sputum production, and a history of exposure to risk factors. This paper discusses the case of a 60-year-old male patient with COPD. It discusses the diagnosis and management of stable …

Baseline Concussion Screening Of Adolescents During Pre-Participation Exams, Kristi Hillman Apr 2014

Baseline Concussion Screening Of Adolescents During Pre-Participation Exams, Kristi Hillman

Theses and Dissertations

Assessment of post-concussion injury and return to play (RTP) guidance are frequently used skills in the primary care setting. Whether the mechanism of injury occurred as a result of athletic participation or from other accidental injury, the adolescent's primary care provider is well-suited for post-injury management as he or she has a comprehensive knowledge of the patient's cognitive and physical histories. The case report highlights a 16-year-old female who presented unaccompanied to her primary care provider for athletic clearance following a motor vehicle accident (MV A). The crash resulted in a right sided head injury and grade I concussion. The …

Elderly Abuse Detection, Jessica Stettner

Theses and Dissertations

With the increasing elderly population, elderly abuse is a growing problem. Health care providers are in a position to screen and detect potential and current abuse situations. Through an observed clinical simulation and literature review, detection and screening of elder abuse is reviewed. The case presented is of a 62-year-old female who is seen in the clinic with her abuser present. Through interviewing the patient red flags of an abusive relationship are apparent. Physical examination of the patient revels braising that does not match the reported mechanism of injury. The need for screening of abuse is evident in the case. …

Angiotensin Converting Enzyme Inhibitors As First Line Of Therapy In Managing Essential Hypertension In Patients Without Compelling Indications., Beatrice C. Sang

Theses and Dissertations

Hypertension (HTN) is one of the most common chronic diseases seen in ambulatory care. It is a major risk factor for the development of cardiovascular diseases including coronary artery disease (CAD), stroke, and heart failure. According to the recent statistical facts on high blood pressure, 67 million American adults have high blood pressure. High blood pressure costs the nation$ 47.5 billion annually in direct medical expenses and$ 3.5 billion each year in lost productivity. About half (47%) of people with the disease have their condition under control (Centers for Disease and Prevention).

The management of HTN is of particular importance …

Are Mass Screenings An Effective Diagnostic Tool For Chlamydia?, Shari Forschen Apr 2014

Are Mass Screenings An Effective Diagnostic Tool For Chlamydia?, Shari Forschen

Theses and Dissertations

Chlamydia Trachomatis infection has historically been a focus of primary health of adolescents and young adults in the age group between 15-24 years of age. Satterwhite et al. (2013) report sexually transmitted infections (ST!) are disproportionately larger amongst adolescent groups than adults. STI's are growing in a day and age where health promotion and disease prevention are at the forefronts of the minds of many providers. Chlamydia infections within the United States have increased nationally. Most recent statistics from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC, 2013) indicate that in 2001 the chlamydia rates for women were 429.6/100,000 population …

Safety Management Systems In Aviation Operations In The United States: Is The Return On Investment Worth The Cost?, Daniel Kwasi Adjekum Apr 2014

Safety Management Systems In Aviation Operations In The United States: Is The Return On Investment Worth The Cost?, Daniel Kwasi Adjekum

Aviation Faculty Publications

The economic benefits of safety programs in aviation operations in the United States are undeniable. Making a strong business case for these programs is not easy, since safety is not tangible until there are accidents and incidents. Safety Management System (SMS) is an organized approach to a systemic safety improvement and challenges the safety professional to quantify the return on investment from safety programs. The economic impact of safety occurrences on aviation operations is explored. An analysis of case study models and the financial merits of implementing proactive safety initiatives like SMS in a collegiate aviation program are explored. The …
