Weighing The Risks And Benefits Of Radiation Exposure And Diagnostic X-Rays In Children, Leah Costello Jan 2014

Weighing The Risks And Benefits Of Radiation Exposure And Diagnostic X-Rays In Children, Leah Costello

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

The number of X-rays, specifically CT scans, performed on patients in the United States is increasing exponentially every year. Children are at most risk for long term damage from this increase in radiation exposure. This study explores how much risk children are being exposed to and how we can, as practitioners, make informed decisions about when or when not to order CT scans. The purpose of this paper is to provide practitioners the information needed to help patients decide if the long-term risks of cancer from medical radiation outweigh the potential benefit of diagnostic or therapeutic radiation. The review of …

Palivizumab Administration Decreases Recurrent Wheeze, Shelly Daniels Jan 2014

Palivizumab Administration Decreases Recurrent Wheeze, Shelly Daniels

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

Children who have been infected with Respiratory Syncytial Virus have a higher incidence of wheeze-associated clinic visits and hospitalizations compared to children without previous RSV exposure. The purpose of this study is to determine if palivizumab, an immunoglobulin injection used to prevent RSV infections, can decrease the incidence of recurrent wheezing in children. The review of literature will follow male and female children from infancy to age 13 who were treated with palivizumab and compare these children to patients with similar demographics that were not treated with palivizumab to determine if there is any difference in incidence of wheezing. The …

Celiac Disease: Advances In Diagnostic Testing?, Alicia A. Hanson Jan 2014

Celiac Disease: Advances In Diagnostic Testing?, Alicia A. Hanson

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

• Celiac disease (CD) is a gluten-sensitivity enteropathy that occurs in genetically susceptible individuals upon ingestion of gluten and resolves when gluten is withdrawn from one’s diet.

• Serological markers play a major role in the diagnosis of celiac disease, however a small intestinal biopsy is currently the gold standard in symptomatic individuals.

• The purpose of this study was to determine if serological testing alone is sufficient to confirm the diagnosis of CD and therefore eliminate the need for a biopsy.

• The review of literature explored studies that compared small intestinal biopsy with different serological testing in males …

Oral Sucrose Is An Effective And Safe Analgesic For Painful Minor Procedures In Infants During Primary Health Care Visit, Tanveer Khan

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

Pain induced by minor office procedures are associated with infant and family’s distress with possible long term psychological effects. Despite this known fact, it is not adequately treated in common practice. American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends pre-procedural oral sucrose to alleviate pain during the procedures. The purpose of this study was to review published literature for the efficacy and safety of oral sucrose as a pre-procedural intervention in infants for mild to moderate procedural pain.

A PUBMED, MEDLINE and COCHRANE database search was performed using the terms analgesia, infant, neonatal, newborn, nociception, pain, sucrose and randomized controlled study. Thirteen …

The review of literature explores studies that discuss treatment options of surgical intervention or conventional treatment such as physical therapy. This information supplies health care providers with the tools to educate patients on treatment options and possible outcomes in hopes to offer the best treatment for the individual. Results show …

Comparing The Long Term Use Of H2 Antagonists (H2ras) And Proton Pump Inhibitors (Ppis) And The Incidence Of Colitis, Reiner Kremer Jan 2014

Comparing The Long Term Use Of H2 Antagonists (H2ras) And Proton Pump Inhibitors (Ppis) And The Incidence Of Colitis, Reiner Kremer

Physician Assistant Scholarly Project Posters

• Commonly used medications for GERD may affect the colonic mucosa

• H2 antagonists (H2RAs) ranitidine, cimetidine famotidine reduce acid secretion by 60 to 70%.

• Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) omeprazole, pantoprazole, lansoprazole, esomeprazole and rabeprazole reduce acid secretion by inhibiting the H+ (proton) secreting pump, reducing hydrochloric acid by 80 to 95%.

• Diarrhea is one of the most commonly reported adverse events.

• H2RAs and PPIs have the physiological and functional potential to interfere with gastrointestinal physiology by altering intestinal pH.

• Microcytic colitis causing chronic diarrhea and colonic inflammation is a significant complication risk after the > 4-8 …

Sarcopenia And Current Research Using Ames Dwarf Mice: A Research Study, Amanda Sodemann Jan 2014

Sarcopenia And Current Research Using Ames Dwarf Mice: A Research Study, Amanda Sodemann

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

This research project focused on the differences observed in muscle fiber composition and surface area between wild type mice and Ames dwarf mice as they aged. A mouse model was utilized because the skeletal muscle framework of mice closely resembles that of human muscle; thus, the observations seen within the mice may also be seen within humans as they age. Comparisons between the wild type and dwarf mice include a smaller cross-sectional muscle area in a dwarf mouse and no drastic change in the percentages of fast and slow twitch muscle fibers as the dwarf mouse ages. Furthermore, differences in …

Use Of The Response-Latency Paradigm For Evaluating Women’S Responses To Threat Of Date Rape, Raeann E. Anderson, Shawn P. Cahill Jan 2014

Use Of The Response-Latency Paradigm For Evaluating Women’S Responses To Threat Of Date Rape, Raeann E. Anderson, Shawn P. Cahill

Psychology Faculty Publications

This study evaluates the novel use of the response-latency paradigm to elicit women’s hypothetical behavioral responses to the threat of acquaintance rape. There were 146 college women recruited and randomly assigned to 4 study conditions. In 3 of the conditions, the threat to which participants responded was experimentally controlled; in the fourth control condition, participants selected the level of threat themselves, following standard procedure of the response-latency paradigm. Results indicated that participant’s responses became more intense as threat levels increased; this relationship was not moderated by whether the threat was controlled by the experimenter or the participant. These results indicate …

Cervical Radiculopathy: A Case Report, Kimberly Dobrovolny Jan 2014

Cervical Radiculopathy: A Case Report, Kimberly Dobrovolny

Physical Therapy Scholarly Projects

There is currently little evidence to determine which conservative treatment approach is best for the management of patients with cervical radiculopathy; however, there is evidence these patients benefit from a multi-treatment approach. The purpose of this case is to describe the physical therapy management of a patient with cervical radiculopathy. Physical therapy diagnosis was based on the patient’s physical signs and symptoms as well as meeting three of the four criteria of the clinical prediction rule which is used to identify patients with cervical radiculopathy. Results from the examination and evaluation were consistent with the magnetic resonance imaging findings. Physical …
