The biodiversity and high productivity of coastal terrestrial and aquatic habitats are the foundation for important benefits to human societies around the world. These globally distributed habitats need frequent and broad systematic assessments, but field surveys only cover a small fraction of these areas. Satellite-based sensors can repeatedly record the visible and near-infrared reflectance spectra that contain the absorption, scattering, and fluorescence signatures of functional phytoplankton groups, colored dissolved matter, and particulate matter near the surface ocean, and of biologically structured habitats (floating and emergent vegetation, benthic habitats like coral, seagrass, and algae). These measures can be incorporated into Essential …

Crumpling Effects And Specific Absorption Rates Of Flexible Amc Integrated Antennas, Sima Noghanian, Ala Alemaryeen Mar 2018

Crumpling Effects And Specific Absorption Rates Of Flexible Amc Integrated Antennas, Sima Noghanian, Ala Alemaryeen

Electrical Engineering Faculty Publications

This study presents the design of a wearable textile-based monopole antenna integrated with a flexible artificial magnetic conductor (AMC). The proposed design covers the industrial, scientific, and medical 2.45 GHz band. An AMC reflector is utilised to isolate the human body from undesired electromagnetic radiation and to improve the antenna radiation characteristics. A monopole antenna was backed with an AMC reflector and tested in free space and on human body models. The inclusion of an AMC reflector increases the front-to-back ratio and antenna gain in free space. On the human body models, the AMC antenna provides stable performance and a …

Patterns Of Co-Occurring Addictions, Ptsd, And Mdd In Detoxification Treatment Seekers: Implications For Improving Detoxification Treatment Outcomes, Raeann E. Anderson, Bryce Hruska, Alec P. Boros, Christopher J. Richardson, Douglas D. Delahanty Mar 2018

Patterns Of Co-Occurring Addictions, Ptsd, And Mdd In Detoxification Treatment Seekers: Implications For Improving Detoxification Treatment Outcomes, Raeann E. Anderson, Bryce Hruska, Alec P. Boros, Christopher J. Richardson, Douglas D. Delahanty

Psychology Faculty Publications

Background and objectives

Poly-substance use and psychiatric comorbidity are common among individuals receiving substance detoxification services. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) are the most common co-occurring psychiatric disorders with substance use disorder (SUD). Current treatment favors a one-size-fits-all approach to treating addiction focusing on one substance or one comorbidity. Research examining patterns of substance use and comorbidities can inform efforts to effectively identify and differentially treat individuals with co-occurring conditions.

Methods

Using latent class analysis, the current study identified four patterns of PTSD, MDD, and substance use among 375 addiction treatment seekers receiving medically supervised detoxification. …

Effect Of Combustion Temperature On The Emission Of Trace Elements Under O2/Co2 Atmosphere During Coal Combustion, Chengrui Qu, Mo Zhang, Michael D. Mann Mar 2018

Effect Of Combustion Temperature On The Emission Of Trace Elements Under O2/Co2 Atmosphere During Coal Combustion, Chengrui Qu, Mo Zhang, Michael D. Mann

Chemical Engineering Faculty Publications

The effect of combustion temperature on the emission of trace elementswas studied under O2/CO2 atmosphere during coal combustion in a laboratory scale fluidized bed combustor. The elemental composition of fine fly ash particles collected with a low pressure impactor(LPI)was quantified by X-Ray F1uorescence Spectrometer (XRF). The elemental composition of coal and bottom ash was quantified byinductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-AES). The results indicate that the contents of Mn, Zn, Cd and Cr in the fly ash increase with the rise of combustion temperature. It is found that the enrichment of Zn and Cd is greater in the submicrometer particles …
