How Readability Factors Are Differentially Associated With Performance For Students Of Different Backgrounds When Solving Mathematics Word Problems, Candace Walkington, Virginia Clinton, Pooja Shivraj

Educational Foundations and Research Faculty Publications

The link between reading and mathematics achievement is well known, and an important question is whether readability factors in mathematics problems are differentially impacting student groups. Using 20 years of data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress and the Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study, we examine how readability factors – such as length, word difficulty, and pronouns – interact with student background characteristics – such as race/ethnicity, mathematics achievement, and socioeconomic status. Textual features that make problems more difficult to process appear to differentially negatively impact struggling students, while features that make language easier to process appear …

Moving an idea into a research project can be a daunting task and the early stages of a project set the stage for success. This poster provides tips for novice and expert researchers to start strong. Poster topics help the researcher develop an idea with background reading, form an idea into a well-built research question, translate that question into a search strategy, determine the best tools for a literature search, employ advanced search techniques to locate the most relevant information, identify an appropriate journal in which to publish, and format the manuscript.

Making A Case For Cardiorespiratory Fitness Surveillance Among Children And Youth, Justin J. Lang, Grant Tomkinson, Ian Janssen, Jonatan R. Ruiz, Francisco B. Ortega, Luc Léger, Mark S. Tremblay Apr 2018

Making A Case For Cardiorespiratory Fitness Surveillance Among Children And Youth, Justin J. Lang, Grant Tomkinson, Ian Janssen, Jonatan R. Ruiz, Francisco B. Ortega, Luc Léger, Mark S. Tremblay

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

We review the evidence that supports cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) as an important indicator of current and future health among school-aged children and youth, independent of physical activity levels. We discuss the merit of CRF measurement for population health surveillance and propose the development of CRF guidelines to help support regional, national, and international surveillance efforts.

Leaching Behavior Of Rare Earth Elements In Fort Union Lignite Coals Of North America, Daniel A. Laudal, Steven A. Benson, Raymond Shane Addleman, Daniel Paulo Apr 2018

Leaching Behavior Of Rare Earth Elements In Fort Union Lignite Coals Of North America, Daniel A. Laudal, Steven A. Benson, Raymond Shane Addleman, Daniel Paulo

Institute of Energy Studies Faculty Publications

Fort Union lignite coal samples were subjected to a series of aqueous leaching experiments to understand the extraction behavior of the rare earth elements (REE). This testing was aimed at understanding the modes of occurrence of the REE in the lignite coals, as well as to provide foundational data for development of rare earth extraction processes. In a first series of tests, a sequential leaching process was used to investigate modes of occurrence of the REE of select lignite coals. The tests involved sequential exposure to solvents consisting of water, ammonium acetate and dilute hydrochloric acid (HCl). The results indicated …

Cognitive Fusion And Post-Trauma Functioning In Veterans: Examining The Mediating Roles Of Emotion Dysregulation, Daniel W. Cox, Thomas C. Motl, A. Myfanwy Bakker, Rachael A. Lunt

Education, Health & Behavior Studies Faculty Publications

When cognitively fused, people have difficulty accepting and clearly perceiving their internal experiences. Following trauma, emotional non-acceptance and emotional non-clarity have been associated with post-trauma functioning. The aim of the present study was to integrate theory and research on cognitive fusion and posttrauma functioning to evaluate a theory-based model in which emotion dysregulation—specifically, emotional non-acceptance and emotional non-clarity—mediated the association between cognitive fusion and post-trauma functioning in a veteran sample. Participants were 149 veterans with a history of military-related trauma. Veterans completed measures of cognitive fusion, emotion dysregulation, posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptoms, and life satisfaction. Overall, emotion dysregulation and …

Structuring A Short-Term Study Abroad Experience To Foster Professional Identity Growth In Undergraduate Education And Social Work Students, David M. Tack, Jeremy Carney

Teaching & Learning Faculty Publications

This paper explores the emerging themes in the development and implementation of a short-term study abroad tour of Ireland and Northern Ireland by education and social work majors. The twenty-two student participants were invited to take part in a post-travel focus group process to discover how the experience impacted their developing professional identities. As the researchers reviewed the focus group transcripts and reflected on the experience, powerful ideas regarding the development of a successful study abroad experience emerged. The following four themes emerged: instructors need to purposefully schedule the experience to meet the social and learning needs of the students; …
