Self-Esteem, Locus Of Control, And Sex-Role Attitudes In Battered Women, Michelle E. Penland
Theses and Dissertations
In recent years, there have been numerous approaches to the study of wife abuse, e.g., sociological, psychoanalytic, and environmental. An approach recently suggested by Walker (1977-78, 1978, 1979a, 1980) incorporates the notion of learned helplessness. Her conceptualization of the psychological characteristics of abused women suggests that such women have a traditional attitude toward the female sex-role, a predominantly external locus of control, and low self-esteem. The present investigation was an attempt to validate Walker's model.
Responses to the Attitudes toward Women Scale (AWS), the Rotter Internal-External locus of control scale (RIE), and the Texas Social Behavior Inventory (TSBI) were gathered …

Simultaneous Feedback Versus Oral-Written Feedback: A Comparison Of Two Supervisory Procedures, Kim Wigness Williams
Simultaneous Feedback Versus Oral-Written Feedback: A Comparison Of Two Supervisory Procedures, Kim Wigness Williams
Theses and Dissertations
The need for quality supervision in th» field of speech- language pathology has ling been recognized. "There is a lack of information regaiding use of simultaneous feedback as a supervisory approach in clinical training in speech-language pathology. The purpose of this study was to compare the generalization by student clinicians of supervisory training provided under two methods of supervisory feedback, simultaneous feedback and oral-written feedback.
Two qualified, experienced clinical supervisors applied simultaneous supervisory feedback to two clinician-supervisor relationships and oral-written feedback to two other supervisor- clinician relationships. The clinicians were evaluated and trailed in the use of antecedent and subsequent …

Space, Medicine And Exobiology, Maureen Dunlevy
Space, Medicine And Exobiology, Maureen Dunlevy
Undergraduate Theses and Senior Projects
As I conclude present research I look to the heavens and wonder. Perhaps none of us, in this lifetime, will understand all that lies there. We understand only fragments. The Space Shuttle has made knowledge more attainable. It promises to fill in the puzzle. Popular support of such projects varies with the degree of success, and has continued to vary since Werner van Braun first left Nazi Germany and convinced the United States Government of the need for a National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). It is the responsibility of the believers in the wealth of space--its resources, lands, creatures …
Lateralized Emotional And Cognitive Processes In Personality, Steven Lee Dawson
Lateralized Emotional And Cognitive Processes In Personality, Steven Lee Dawson
Theses and Dissertations
Research on hemispheric specialization has generated theories of lateralized cognition, personality traits, and emotional experience and expression. Of these the research on lateralized cognition has provided the most reliable and interpretable results. Using the lateralized cognitive attributes as a guideline, a personality model of hemispheric activation is hypothesized which suggests that each hemisphere provides a distinctive overall approach to information gathering, cognitive processing, emotional experience and behavioral expression. This model predicts that detai1-oriented perception, rumination, and analytic processing are the domain of the left hemisphere, while a more spatial perceptual approach and holistic cognitive processing are the domain of the …
Treatability Of Aqueous Gasifier Effluent Using Solvent Extraction, Michael D. Mann
Treatability Of Aqueous Gasifier Effluent Using Solvent Extraction, Michael D. Mann
Theses and Dissertations
The treatability of aqueous gasifier effluent to reduce the content of soluble organics using solvent extraction as the principal treatment step was investigated. The aqueous gasifier effluent was collected from the spray washer of the Grand Forks Energy Technology Center's slagging fixed-bed gasifier during run RA176.
Raw gasifier effluent is treatable using solvent extraction with n-butyl acetate and isopropyl ether as solvents. A total capital investment of approximately $5,494,800 can be expected for a treatment facility using n-butyl acetate as the extracting solvent, capable of purifying wastewater from a slagging gasifier plant with a large enough capacity to produce 250 …

Extraversion, Introversion And Anxiety In Relation To Affiliation In College Students, Thomas Matthew Krapu
Extraversion, Introversion And Anxiety In Relation To Affiliation In College Students, Thomas Matthew Krapu
Theses and Dissertations
Similarities between personality defects resulting from disruptive, inadequate affective development and problems of extreme extraversion and introversion suggested that developmental ego psychology and object relations theories might be useful in understanding interpersonal functioning in general and how people affiliate in particular. Research on affiliation indicated that extraverts are more affiliative and introverts less affillative, under a condition of high anxiety. A greater predisposition to become anxious (trait anxiety) was also associated with reduced affiliative tendencies under a high anxiety condition. Other research suggested that women and first born subjects were more affiliative than men and later born subjects. The present …

A Complete Achilles Tendon Rupture-- An Anatomical Review And Case Study Of The Treatment, Surgery, And Rehabilitation Of One Complete Rupture, Myron J. Cullen
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this thesis was to study the anatomi cal structure, mechanical function, and mechanism of injury of the Achilles tendon. The surgical procedure, description and results of the rehabilitation program, developed by this researcher specifically for this injury were presented.
A case study of one twenty-three-year-old male subject was the basis of this study. A day-by-day follow-up of the subject's rehabilitation program from surgery to dismissal from rehabilitation were presented.
The results of this rehabilitation program were favorable. This subject was able to return to daily activities much sooner than expected and was able to participate in a …
Introducing North Dakota Writers To North Dakota Readers, Kathie Anderson
Introducing North Dakota Writers To North Dakota Readers, Kathie Anderson
Theses and Dissertations
My study of the literature of North Dakota began ten years ago, when the topic for the annual writers conference at the University of North Dakota was the literature of the Northern Plains. At that conference I listened to Lois Phillips Hudson, Thomas McGrath, Richard Lyons, and other regional writers. Since that conference, I have been reading the literature of North Dakota and learning about the writers, and I have introduced the literature of North Dakota to my students in Grand Forks and Bismarck. My students, like the rest of us, have had the initial reaction, "Literature--Here?"
This study consists …
Perceptions Of Selected Groups Toward The Current And Ideal Role Of Special Education Directors As Administrative Leaders In North Dakota Schools Which Have High Concentrations Of American Indian Students, Ramona Decoteau
Theses and Dissertations
The Problem. The purpose of the study was to determine how selected groups view the role of the special education director/coordinator in North Dakota schools which have concentrations of American Indian students. This study also compared the perceptions of the selected groups toward the current and ideal role of the special education director/coordinator.
Procedure. A survey instrument was developed and administered to seventy-eight administrators, special education directors/coordinators, and special education teachers to assess perceptions toward the current and ideal role of the special education director/coordinator in North Dakota schools serving significant numbers of American Indian students. The data obtained from …
